A note about sources

Thanks to Ruth Westbrook for some of the birth and death dates and for other data shared on this family.

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Daniel Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

Daniel Grant was born 4 May 1800 in NC, probably Wayne County. (Thanks to Ruth Westbrook for his birthdate). He was age 50 in 1850 and age 60 in 1860 both of which are in perfect agreement with his birthdate. However, a Duplin Co, NC Court Record shows him to be "about 15" on 17 Oct 1809 when he was bound out to David Hooks to be apprenticed in farming until age 21. If 15 in 1809, he was born ca 1794, unless this refers to another Daniel Grant, which I doubt. (Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1809-1811 Part 8 by Joyce Jones Franks, 1993)

Daniel's parents are not known, but I he may be a son of Elisha Grant (c1759-1830) of Wayne Co, NC. I can't prove that though, but Elisha seems a good choice, but I don't have any overwhelming evidence that he is the one. The fact that Daniel was bound out in 1809 may indicate he was an orphan. It is possible he was a son of Jesse Grant and Jean Burns who married in Duplin in 1794, but were gone by 1800. Jesse may have died leaving Daniel an orphan. Daniel was always closely associated with Ephraim Grant who was approximately 27 years older than him (old enough to be his father, but I doubt that he is), though he wasn't named in Ephraim's Will of 1860. Ephraim's daughter Smithy Grant married Daniel's son William Grant. I'm leaning toward the possibility that both Ephraim and Daniel are sons of Jesse Grant (bef 1764-aft 1796) of Duplin Co, NC, probably from two different marriages. Another possibility is that Jesse and Ephraim were brothers, and that would make Ephraim an Uncle to Daniel.

Daniel Grant obtained a marriage bond on 20 Mar 1817 in Duplin Co, NC to marry Sarah Churchwell. Isaiah Smith was the bondsman. Daniel Grant was listed on the 1820 census in Wayne Co, NC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetized, so we can't tell where he lived nor who his neighbors were.

Daniel Grant was still in Wayne Co, NC for the 1830 census. This census was in alpha order, so we can't tell who his neighbors were, but each list was only alpha within its own district, and he lived in Whitfields District, which is roughly the same as New Hope District.

The 1840 census of Wayne Co, NC shows Daniel listed in New Hope District. On the same page just a few houses away were several other Grant families including Kinchen Grant (son of Ephraim Grant), Jesse Grant (also son of Ephraim), Stephen Grant, and John Grant.

I don't know when Sarah Churchwell died, but it was before 1850. The 1850 census shows Daniel with a wife named Elizabeth, age 50 (born ca 1800). Ruth Westbrook told me Elizabeth's maiden name was Whitfield. Since most of the early Wayne County marriages were lost, I didn't find a marriage for Daniel and Elizabeth.

In the 1850 census, Daniel Grant was still in Wayne Co, NC and listed in the district North of the Neuse River (which includes New Hope District). He was next door to George Grant (c1820) whom I believe is his son.

New Hope District presumably covers the same territory as modern New Hope Township. This is the area east of Goldsboro with the Neuse River as its southern border all the way East to the Lenoir County line and for a northern border it may be West Bear Creek. The western border is the town of Goldsboro. That is a large area, and without consulting deeds and other records I can't narrow it down any better. I will check out Grant family deeds eventually to narrow down where these folks lived.

I haven't yet searched the 1870 census for Grant families in Wayne Co, NC. Nor have I exhausted the available records, so there may be much more on this family waiting to be discovered.

Ruth Westbrook gave me Elizabeth Whitfield Grant's death date as 9 Nov 1864 and Daniel's death date as 21 Mar 1880, both presumably in Wayne Co, NC.

Daniel and Sarah's children are mostly proven by the 1850 census, but some are unproven so far, but seem to fit.

William Grant was born 18 Feb 1817 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. His birth date is from Ruth Westbrook. This predates his parents marriage by a month, but it could easily be off by one year. In 1850 he was 33 (ca 1816/17) and in 1860 he was 43 (ca 1816/17) both of which agree with the birth date above. I don't know what proof there is that William is a son of Daniel Grant, but he does fit per the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census. He also lived near Daniel in the 1850 and 1860 census. William Grant married his probable cousin Smithy Grant ca 1840/50 in Wayne Co, NC. Smithy was a daughter of Ephraim Grant (c1773-1860). Don't know how Ephraim and Daniel are related, or if related, but they did live near each other. It appears that William and Smithy Grant had no children, at least none listed in 1850 or 1860 census. In 1850 they were in Wayne Co, NC in the district North of the Neuse River, and were next to several children of Ephraim Grant.

In 1860 they were in New Hope District of Wayne Co, NC just three houses from William's supposed father Daniel Grant.

William Grant and Smithy Grant are both buried in Wayne Co, NC at the New Hope Friends Cemetery. His stone has 18 Feb 1817 - 8 Aug 1887 and hers has 1825 - 1891.

Edmond Grant was born ca 1818/19 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. He was listed at home with Daniel in the 1850 census as Edmond Grant age 31. He married on 22 Sep 1855 in Wayne Co, NC "at Polly Bowndes" (should probably be "Bowden" instead of "Bowndes") to Sarah Ann Herring. I don't know who her parents were, but in 1850 she was residing with William Bowden (age 28) in Wayne Co, NC, listed as Sally Herring, age 36, with two children, Lewis (15) and George (6).  This seems to indicate she was married to a Mr. Herring who died before 1850. In 1860, Edmond and Sarah were next to George Grant who was next to their father Daniel Grant in New Hope District.

The young "George Grant", age 16 (c1843/44) living with Edmond and family in 1860 is Sarah's son from her previous marriage, and should be listed as a Herring instead of Grant (common census problem). I don't know who Polly Kennady, age 5 is, who is with them in 1860. Ruth Westbrook gave me Edmond's death date of 2 Feb 1874.

George Grant was born ca 1819/20 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. He isn't a proven son of Daniel, but he is a good fit. He was listed next door to Daniel in both the 1850 and 1860 census. George named his oldest son "Daniel", and Daniel (Sr) did have a son this age per the 1820-1840 census records. See George's own page for additional data.

Infant Grant. A daughter was born in 1822 and died as an infant according to Ruth Westbrook.

Elizabeth Grant was born ca 1823/24 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. According to Ruth Westbrook, Elizabeth married William Henry Sasser. I found Henry Sasser and Elizabeth listed in 1850 Wayne Co, NC just two houses from her father Daniel Grant. She was age 26, Henry was 66 (born ca 1784). Their oldest child was only 4, so they probably married ca 1845 or so.

Infant Grant. A daughter was born in 1824 and died as an infant according to Ruth Westbrook.

Henry Grant was born ca 1825/26 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. He was listed at home with Daniel in the 1850 census as Henry Grant age 24. Henry married on 17 Nov 1852 in Wayne Co, NC to Catherine Best. The marriage record listed her as Catherine "Boyte". She was a Best, and a widow of a Mr. Boyette according to Ruth Westbrook. I found a James Boyette age 26 (c1824) and wife Catherine age 20 (c1830) in 1850 Wayne Co, NC not far from the Grants. This seems the one, as their oldest son was "Robert Boyette" age 7 months, and in 1860 Henry Grant and his wife Catherine had a son "Robert Grant" age 10, so that is probably him, just mislabelled as a Grant (common census problem). The 1860 census shows them in Goldsboro District of Wayne Co, NC. I believe that "William Grant" age 9 in 1860 is also a son of James Boyette due to his age, since he predates the 1852 marriage of Henry Grant and Catherine.

Infant Grant. A daughter was born in 1828 and died as an infant according to Ruth Westbrook.

Cuzzy Grant was born ca 1829/1830 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. She was listed at home with her father Daniel in the 1850 census as "Cuzzy" Grant age 20. "Cuzzy" may be a nickname for "Kesiah". I don't know who Cuzzy married. She wasn't listed with her parents in 1860, so perhaps she married or died between 1850 and 1860.

Caleb Grant was born ca 1830 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. He was listed at home with Daniel in the 1850 census as "Calep" Grant age 19. He married Mary Bowden ca 1850/52 in either Wayne or Duplin Co, NC. (Her maiden name per Ruth Westbrook). She may have been from Duplin County, as they were living there on the 1860 census in the Northern Division.

Ichabod Grant was born ca 1831/32 in Wayne Co, NC, presumably in New Hope District. He was listed at home in the 1850 census as "Bud" Grant age 18. He married Mary Dailey 20 Oct 1859 in Wayne Co, NC. The children I show for them were given to me by Ruth Westbrook. The 1860 census shows Ichabod and his new wife still living with Daniel and Elizabeth Grant. They had no children yet at that time.
