Thomas M. Henderson and Margaret Emaline Stewart of NC, TN and Union Co, GA

There are birth dates for everyone in this family, and I think they came from an old Family Bible, but I don't know who has it now.

Thomas M. Henderson was born 23 Aug 1834 (per tombstone) somewhere in Tennessee. I don't know what county. His Civil War Discharge papers lists his birth place as "Rutherford Co, NC", but all of his census records (1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900) list his birth place as Tennessee. The 1880 and 1900 census show that Thomas' father was born in NC, so perhaps that is the Rutherford County connection. There is a "Rutherford" County, Tennessee, but I don't think that is where Thomas was born, but it is possible.

Thomas M. Henderson is a son of James and Jane Henderson. This is proven by Thomas being home with his widowed mother for the 1850 census, and was also common family knowledge.

Thomas was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Union Co, GA, age 5-9 (born ca 1830/35).

Thomas M. Henderson married Margaret Emaline Stewart on 28 Dec 1857 (per Family Bible?) in Union Co, GA.

Margaret was born 11 Jan 1835 (per tombstone) in Buncombe Co, NC, a daughter of John Stewart and Ruth Tutt.

Thomas and Margaret were listed on the 1860 census in Union Co, GA, next door to his brother James Henderson and his brother William Henderson.

On 2 Sep 1861, a roster was made in Union Co, GA of "eligible" men (eligible to fight for the Confederacy), and Tom Henderson was listed in Gum Log district.

Thomas Henderson enlisted on 5 Jul 1862 in Company B, 7th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry (Confederate). He enlisted as a Private in Clay Co, NC. Listed as age 28, and a resident of Union Co, GA.

On 3 Aug 1863, Thomas transferred to Company F, 65th Regiment North Carolina Troops. He served in this Unit until he deserted sometime around September-December 1863. He took the Oath of Allegience to the United States on 15 Mar 1864 in Chattanooga, TN. Around this time he signed up with the Union Army. I don't have the details of his Union service.

Thomas and Margaret were listed on the 1870 census in Union Co, GA. They were listed next door to Margaret's Uncle Isham Stewart and Thomas' brother James Henderson.

Thomas and Margaret were listed on the 1880 census in Union Co, GA in Gum Log Township. They were next to Martha Stewart (Margaret's sister-in-law, widow of her brother William Stewart), and also next to William Crisp.

Thomas and Margaret adopted his grand nephew Arthur Scroggins (aka Arthur Henderson) on 11 Sep 1895. Arthur was born out of wedlock to Alice Scroggins and William M. Henderson (son of Thomas' brother James). He was born 15 Nov 1893, and apparently took on the Henderson name, either due to his adopted parents, or due to his birth father's name (or both).

Thomas and Margaret were listed on the 1900 census in Union Co, GA in Gum Log Township.

Thomas M. Henderson died on 9 Jan 1909 (per tombstone) in Union Co, GA. He is buried at the Henderson Cemetery.

Margaret's tombstone says she died on 18 May 1909, but this must be an error, for she was still living by the time of the 1910 census. She was listed on the 1910 census in Union Co, GA in Gum Log Township with several family members with her.

Margaret died sometime prior to 1920. Her death date might actually be 18 May 1910 instead of 1909. She is buried next to Thomas in the Henderson Cemetery.

Children

Thomas M. Henderson and Margaret Emaline Stewart had nine children, plus one adopted son.

William J Henderson was born 27 Oct 1858 in Union Co, GA and died November 1858 in Union Co, GA. He is buried at the Henderson Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

He was probably named after his uncle William Stewart and his uncle William Henderson.

Rutha Jane Henderson was born 11 Apr 1860 in Union Co, GA. She was apparently named for her two grandmothers, Ruth Tutt Stewart and Jane (---) Henderson.

Rutha died sometime between 1880 and 1900 in Union Co, GA. She is probably buried at the Henderson Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

Ibiline Henderson was born 3 Oct 1863 in Union Co, GA. She was apparently named for her aunt Ibiline Henderson.

Mary A "Molly" Henderson was born 23 May 1866 in Union Co, GA. Molly was home with her parents for the 1870 and 1880 census in Union Co, GA.

She married Clark Rogers "Doc" Russell on 28 Feb 1886 in Union Co, GA. Their marriage record gave them as "C. R. Russell" and "Mary Henderson". They were married by Samuel Ezell, Minister.

Doc Russell was born June 1861 in North Carolina. I have his parents listed as William Russell and Ruth Bell, but I'm not sure where I got that. I did not see this family in 1870 or 1880 Union Co, GA, so I suspect they didn't get there until between 1880 and 1886. There were other Russell families in Union Co, GA before then, probably related.

Doc and Molly were just two houses from her parents on the 1900 census in Union Co, GA in Gum Log Township.

I don't have the family on the 1910 census yet. I did not find them in Union Co, GA in 1920, so they must have moved away.

Elizabeth E "Bett" Henderson was born 26 Dec 1869 (per tombstone) in Union Co, GA. She was probably named for her aunt Elizabeth "Bett" Stewart Turner.

Bett was home with her parents for the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census in Union Co, GA.

Lattie was born 22 Jun 1876 (per tombstone) in NC somewhere. He was a son of Isaac Ledford. I don't know when this family came to Union Co, GA, but it was probably after 1880, as I didn't find them in Union Co, GA in 1880 (though many other Ledfords were there before then).

Lattie and Bett were living with her widowed mother for the 1910 census in Union Co, GA in Gum Log Township.

They were still in Union Co, GA, Gum Log Township for the 1920 census. I don't have this entry typed up yet.

James Lattie Ledford died in Union Co, GA on 12 Nov 1954, and is buried at the Henderson Cemetery.

Elizabeth E. "Bett" Henderson Ledford died on 24 Mar 1962 in Union Co, GA, and is also buried at the Henderson Cemetery.

Emma Ann Casedine Henderson was born 5 Sep 1871 in Union Co, GA. I'm not sure who, if anyone, she was named after. Cassie was home with her parents for the 1880 and 1900 census in Union Co, GA.

I have not been able to locate them in 1910 or 1920, at least not in Union Co, GA.

Dora Frances Laner Henderson was born 16 Dec 1874 (per tombstone) in Union Co, GA. Laner was home with her parents for the 1880 census.

Laner married Joseph G. Burnett in Cherokee Co, NC in 1894. The actual date was obscured on the marriage record, or not listed at all. It gave him as "Joseph R. Burnett", and her as "Dovie S. Henderson".

Joseph was born December 1872 in Georgia, perhaps Union County. I did not find him in Union County on the 1880 census, so I don't know who his parents were.

Joseph and Laner were on the 1900 census in Union Co, GA, next door to her parents.

Dora Frances Laner Henderson Burnett died on 29 Aug 1935 in Union Co, GA, and is buried at the Henderson Cemetery.

James Thomas Henderson was born 20 Dec 1877 in Union Co, GA and died 30 Dec 1877 in Union Co, GA. He is buried at the Henderson Cemetery. He appears to be named after his father (Thomas Henderson) and his grandfather (James Henderson).

John Robert Washington Henderson was born 3 Oct 1880 in Union Co, GA and died Nov 1880 in Union Co, GA. He is buried at the Henderson Cemetery.

James Arthur (Scroggins) Henderson was born 15 Nov 1893, a son of Alice P. Scroggins and William M. Henderson, born out of wedlock. His mother gave him over to his Great Uncle Thomas M. Henderson to be raised. He was apparently named "James" after his grandfather, James Scroggins.

Arthur married Inkabo Louella Grant on 2 Jan 1916 in Union Co, GA. Coincidentally, Inkabo was also born out of wedlock. She was a daughter of Gertrude I. Grant (daughter of John Patton Grant and Darthula Evans).

Inkabo was born 8 Aug 1901 in Swain Co, NC. She was raised by her grandparents, John and Darthula Grant.

Arthur and Inkabo were listed on the 1920 census in Union Co, GA. I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Inkabo died 13 Jul 1970 in Union Co, GA and Arthur died 7 Dec 1978 in Union Co, GA. They are buried next to each other at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Union Co, GA.
