Welcome to my Henderson genealogy pages. I am interested in the Henderson surname in North Carolina, Tennessee and north Georgia.

Henderson was the 101st most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 109th.

My most recent Henderson ancestor is my Great Great Grandmother, Ibiline Henderson, born 1863 in Union Co., GA. There she married Noah Washington Gilbert in 1881. He died in neighboring Cherokee Co., NC in 1914, and she back in Union Co., GA in 1934. Her parents:

Thomas M. Henderson, born 1834 in McMinn Co., TN, moved to Union Co., GA while still very small. He married Margaret Emaline Stewart there in 1857. They remained in Union Co., GA the rest of their lives, excluding his stints in both the Confederate and Union armies during the Civil War. He died in 1909, and she sometime between 1910 and 1920, though her tombstone gives her death year as 1909. His parents:

James Henderson, born 1790/1800 in Rutherford Co., NC. He left NC and went west to Sumner Co., TN where he married Jannet (Jane) Pack in 1818. The frontier must not have suited them, for they, and some of her relatives went east again right after that, into what is now McMinn Co., TN where they were through ca 1835. Then they moved to Union Co., GA where he died in the 1840s. Jane died there in the 1860s. His parents:

William Henderson, born ca 1770 in Virginia (county unknown). He was in Rutherford Co., NC by the 1790s where he married Elizabeth “Betsy” maiden name unknown. You’ll find trees online that list his wife as Elizabeth Abernathy. However, that was a different William Henderson who married that person, and they lived in neighboring Lincoln Co., NC. Their family is well documented so there is no doubt that Elizabeth Abernathy isn’t our William’s wife.

William lived in the part of Rutherford that became Polk Co., NC in the early 1850s. He died in Polk in 1853 leaving a Will naming his children, but no wife as she’d died before then.

William’s parents are unknown. There was a James Henderson in Rutherford early on who *could* be his father, as William named his oldest son James. That could be a coincidence though. More research is needed. We do know William was born in Virginia, per his 1850 census entry, but I have no idea which county yet.
