I (Marty Grant) do not know how (or if) I'm related to Daniel Stuart.

Daniel Stuart was born ca 1807/08 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know what county, but if his parents are who I think they are, then he was probably born in Greenville District, but that is far from proven.

I don't know who Daniel's parents were for sure, but I have a suspicion (based on circumstantial evidence) that he was a son of Nathaniel Stewart (1770/75). This is mainly based on the fact that they were in the same places at the same time over several years, and that Nathaniel did have an apparent son Daniel's age per the early census records. If they are not father and son, they are certainly related in some close fashion.

Presumably, Daniel would have been home with his parents for the 1810 census, aged about 2, so should be listed as "under 10" (born ca 1800/10). As you can imagine there were quite a few Stewarts in Upper West SC and Western NC that year who had sons this age. However I've narrowed the search to only Greenville District, SC and Buncombe Co, NC for the reason that I'm sure Daniel was part of the Nathaniel Stewart family. In 1810 Greenville there were 7 Stewart/Stuart households, of which all but 2 had sons under age 10. However, I don't think any of those are Daniel's parents. I believe he had moved already by 1810 with his family into Buncombe Co, NC. In 1810 Buncombe there were 5 Stewart/Stuart households, including Nathaniel Stewart (Sr) (bef 1755) (who had no children at home that year), and Nathaniel Stewart (Jr) (1770/75) who had 3 sons under 10, one of which I'd wager was Daniel. Also listed was James Stewart (1780/84) with one son under 10, Joshua Stewart (1784/86) with 2 sons that age, and finally Jacob Stewart (1775) with no sons that age. That means that Nathaniel (1770/75), James (1780/84) and Joshua (1784/86) should all be considered suspects for Daniel's father.

For the 1820 census Daniel would have been about 12 years old, so should be enumerated in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1804/10). In Buncombe County that year there were several Stewarts still and only these with at least one son that age: James Stewart (1780/84), Joshua Stewart (1784/86), Nathan Stewart (1775/94) (Duplicate entry, I think), Charles Stewart (1770/75), and Nathaniel Stewart Jr (1770/75)

For the 1830 census, Daniel would have been approximately 22 years old, so he should be enumerated in the age 20-29 category (1800/10). In Buncombe County, Nathaniel Stewart (1770/75) had one son that age and so did Charles Stewart (1770/75) and James Stewart (1780/84). These were the only ones.

Daniel Stewart married Nancy --- sometime before ca 1836 in Buncombe Co, NC. She was born ca 1817/18 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know her maiden name.

Based on the birth places and dates of their children (as proven by the 1850 Macon Co, NC census) they moved around a little bit. They were in Buncombe Co, NC ca 1836, and in Macon Co, NC ca 1838 and in Henderson Co, NC ca 1840 (Henderson County was formed from Buncombe in 1838, so this may have been where he lived before when it was still Buncombe), and back to Macon by ca 1842.

I have not been able to find this family on the 1840 census. His presumed parents (Nathaniel Sr and wife) had moved to Macon Co, NC before 1835, and Daniel either went with them, or came later. Daniel was not listed in Macon (or elsewhere) on the 1835 Voter list. That just means he didn't vote in that election. In 1840 Daniel should have been in Henderson based on the fact that one of his children was born in Henderson ca 1840. The fact that they moved around could explain why he was missed by the census taker.  He was not listed in Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson or Macon County in 1840.  There is the possibility that he had left the state temporarily around 1840. There were over 100 Daniel Stewart/Stuart listings on the 1840 census index, so I've not checked them all.

Daniel was in Macon County in the 1840's for that is where his children were born ca 1842, ca 1844 and ca 1847.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. He was in the Cane Break District which was in the south east corner of Macon in an area that before 1838 bordered Buncombe County, and after 1838 bordered Henderson County. This entire area later became Jackson County in 1851, and Transylvania County in 1861. There were other Stewarts, but none nearby. The closest was 28 households away (which could be quite a distance in this mountainous county) was John Stuart (1812), no known relation to Daniel. The 1850 census record shows Daniel with $75 worth of real property, but I've found no deeds showing how he obtained this land.

In 1851 this area became part of the new Jackson County.

I did not find Daniel Stuart on the 1860 census in Jackson County (or Macon County). He was not found elsewhere on the 1860 census in North Carolina, nor did I find his wife or children that year. That means they all moved somewhere else. I would guess Tennessee, since some of his probable siblings had gone there. Unfortunately the available online 1860 census index for Tennessee is terribly incomplete. Some of his siblings were in Polk County, Tennessee by then. I'd almost guess that Daniel and family were also there in 1860 too, or nearby anyway.

I did a check of Polk Co, TN in 1870 and Daniel was not there. I did not find him on the 1880 census anywhere in the United States. He was apparently dead before then. I found their son Jasper on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC, but no sign of him in 1880. That makes me believe that Daniel and family did not move too far away (Polk Co, TN and Cherokee Co, NC border each other).

Children

Daniel and Nancy had six children per the 1850 census. Of them, I only have a little additional data on son Jasper.
