I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin, 6 times removed of Thomas Winfrey.

Thomas Winfrey was born ca 1812/13 in Stokes Co, NC.

Thomas Winfrey is almost certainly a son of Obediah and Lucinda Winfrey, though I've seen no direct proof of their relationship, but circumstantial evidence seems to suggest it. They had a son this age, Thomas was born in Stokes Co, NC at a time when Obediah Winfrey was the only Winfrey family there.

Thomas Winfrey seemed to be home with his parents for the early census records, 1820 and 1830 in Stokes.

On 21 Sep 1839, Thomas Winfrey obtained a marriage bond in neighboring Guilford Co, NC to marry Tabitha Parrish.

I didn't find Thomas listed on the 1840 census.

Thomas Winfrey was listed on the 1850 census in Guilford Co, NC. Of great interest, he was within just a few households of several other Winfrey families, members of the Hardin Winfrey family, who himself was born in VA, and lived in Person, Caswell and Guilford Co, NC but who was in Stokes Co, NC by 1850. This strongly suggests some form of relationship between the two Winfrey families. Of course it could be a coincidence that they wound up so close together, but that seems hard to accept. Fortunately for us, the 1850 Guilford census taker decided to take down the county of birth, instead of just the state. This shows Thomas to be born in Stokes Co, NC.
