I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandnephew of Obediah Winfrey.

Obediah Winfrey was born ca 1765/74, probably in Surry (or Wilkes) Co, NC in the Mitchells River area. It is also possible he was born in VA instead. Obediah Winfrey is almost certainly a son of Isaac and Sarah Winfrey. I've seen no direct proof of their relationship, but circumstantial evidence in abundant.

On 11 Dec 1785 Obediah Winfrey witnessed a Surry Co, NC deed from James and Sarah Fielder to Peter Murphy. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 423).

Obediah was not listed on the 1790 census, though he was old enough to have been, so he was probably with another family. He didn't seem to be with his parents in Wilkes Co, NC.

On 22 Jan 1793 Obediah Winfrey witnessed two Surry Co, NC Deeds, both from William Watts to Caleb Winfrey, Obediah's brother. Both Watts and Caleb Winfrey were listed as residents of Wilkes Co, NC on this deed, so it is probably that Obediah was in Wilkes then as well. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 168 and 193).

Obediah Winfrey married Lucinda --- sometime before ca 1797, presumably in Surry or Wilkes Co, NC. I've seen no proof that Lucy was his wife, but she was listed on the 1830 census as head of household, just after Obediah had died, and it seems likely she was his widow.

Obediah was listed on the 1800 census in Surry Co, NC near his father. His household contained several older women, perhaps his wife's mother and sister.

1 Female(s) 16-25     (1774-1784)	Sister? Sister-in-law? (1774/84) --> gone by 1810

Obediah and family moved to neighboring Stokes Co, NC before 1810. They were listed on the 1810 census in Stokes, the only Winfrey family in that county at the time. The age of his wife in this census is way off from Lucy's, so it is possible that Lucy wasn't his first wife, or else this census is in error. There were two daughters listed in 1810, both born ca 1794/1800, but they had no daughters with them in 1800.

They were still in Stokes for the 1820 census. Once again they were the only Winfrey family in the county.

Obediah Winfrey apparently died in the 1820's, for Lucy was listed as head of household on the 1830 census in Stokes Co, NC.

I didn't find any Winfrey listings on the 1840 census in Stokes Co, NC. I suspect the index is faulty, and a thorough reading of the census will turn them up.

:Lucinda was listed on the 1850 census in Stokes Co, NC residing with her married daughter Sarah Winfrey Keiger.

By 1850, her children and grandchildren were found in Forsyth and Guilford Co, NC. Forsyth was created from the southern section of Stokes in 1849. There were other Winfrey families in Stokes in 1850, possibly related as well.

I haven't checked 1860 or later records for Lucy.

Children

I have no direct proof for any children of Obediah and Lucy Winfrey, except probably for Sarah Winfrey, whom Lucinda was residing with in 1850. My listing below is based on census analysis, and circumstantial evidence.

Isaac Winfrey (1797)

Unknown Daughter (c1794/1800)

Elizabeth Winfrey (c1804/05)

Unknown Son (c1800/10)

William Winfrey (c1804/10)

Unknown Son (c1804/10)

Thomas Winfrey (c1812/13)

Unknown Daughter (c1810/20)

Sarah Winfrey (c1807/08)

Unknown Daughter (c1810/15)

Isaac Winfrey born ca 1803/04, or ca 1797, in either Surry or Stokes Co, NC. A child this age was with Obediah Winfrey for the 1800 census, but gone by 1810, unless he was one of the ones listed in the 1800/1810 category. In 1820 he was back, and apparently with his widowed mother Lucinda in 1830. Isaac married Margaret Elizabeth James in 1842 in Stokes Co, NC.

In 1850, Isaac was listed three households from his mother in Stokes Co, NC.

See his own page for additional information on him.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1794/1800. Obediah had no apparent daughter this age with him in 1800, but he did have two of them with him in 1810. By 1820, one of these two had left his household, and had probably married, or died by then. I didn't find any female Winfrey marriages between 1810 and 1820, at least not in Stokes Co, NC.

Elizabeth Winfrey born ca 1804/05. Obediah had no apparent daughter this age with him in 1810, but he did have two girls born ca 1794/1800 then (who weren't with him im 1800). By 1820, one of these two was still at home. In 1830, she didn't seem to be home still, but Lucy Winfrey had an apparent daughter born ca 1800/10 with her, who was not there in 1820, so that could be this same daughter, if born ca 1800.

Otherwise, I'm fairly sure this is Elizabeth Winfrey born ca 1804/05 who married Samuel Fowler on or after 29 May 1824 in Stokes Co, NC. They were in Stokes Co, NC for the 1850 census, with a Patsy Winfrey age 22 residing with them. I'm not sure if Elizabeth belongs in this family or not, but it seems highly likely. She was just two pages from her widowed mother Lucinda in 1850.

Unknown Son born ca 1800/1810. This son was with Obediah in 1810, but gone by 1820, so he had probably married, moved away, or died by then.

William Winfrey born ca 1804/1810. This son was with Obediah in 1810 and 1820, but gone by 1830. I strongly suspect that this is William Winfrey born ca 1800/10, who married Sarah Fulps on or after 13 Jun 1827 in Stokes Co, NC. For the 1830 census, William was listed near Obediah's widow Lucy in Stokes Co, NC. I didn't find William in 1840 or 1850, but I did find a child Sarah Winfrey, age 19, living with George Fulps, age 70 in Forsyth Co, NC (formed in 1849 from Stokes). I strongly suspect that she is a child of William and Sarah, and that she is residing with her grandfather for some reason; perhaps because her parents were dead.

See William's own page for additional information on him.

Unknown Son born ca 1804/1810. This son was with Obediah in 1810 and 1820, and probably with Lucy in 1830. I don't know who he is just yet.

Thomas Winfrey born ca 1812/13. A child this age (c1810/15) was with Obediah in 1820 and with Lucy in 1830. I strongly suspect this is Thomas Winfrey born ca 1812/13. He married in Guilford Co, NC (borders Stokes) on or after 21 Sep 1839 to Tabitha Parish and was listed there on the 1850 census, with his birth place reported as Stokes Co, NC. His only child at that time was named "Lucy Ann", so that works as well.

See his own page for additional information.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1810/20. She was with Obediah in 1820, but apparently not with Lucy in 1830, unless she was the daughter listed with Lucy born ca 1800/10. This would work if her birth date was ca 1810.

Sarah Winfrey born ca 1807/08. She was with Obediah in 1820 (age 1810/15) and with Lucy in 1830. She married John Keiger on or after 1 Jan 1847 in Stokes Co, NC. She was apparently his second wife. For the 1850 census they were in Stokes Co, NC with her widowed mother Lucinda residing with them. Sarah's age in 1850 was 42, which puts her birth at ca 1807/08, which doesn't agree with the earlier census records, but it isn't off by much.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1810/15. She was with Obediah in 1820 and with Lucy in 1830.
