Thomas Winfrey and Mary Hadley of Surry Co, NC

Thomas Winfrey was born ca 1794/1800, probably in Surry (but perhaps Wilkes) Co, NC. Thomas Winfrey is a proven son of Caleb Winfrey and Nancy Bowles.

After the death of Caleb's first wife Nancy Bowles, he deeded property to his children, just before he remarried:

On 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey gave a deed of gift to his "sons" Isaac Winfrey, Thomas Winfrey, Caleb Winfrey and John Winfrey, property in Surry Co, NC. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 319).

Sometime between 1810 and 1817, Thomas Winfrey married Mary Hadley. A marriage bond was found dated 2 Nov 18-- (the rest of the year was unreadable). Joel Burch was the bondsman. He was Thomas' 1st cousin.

Thomas was listed on the 1830 census in Surry Co, NC on the same page with his brother Caleb Winfrey.

On 4 Jul 1831 Thomas Winfrey, "in right of his wife Mary Winfrey" sold property to William Hobson. This probably indicates property inherited from her side of the family. An inspection of Hadley records from this timeframe in the Estates and Deeds may show who her parents were. I haven't checked on this. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book U page 231).

Thomas Winfrey was listed on the 1835 tax list in Surry Co, NC, with 100 acres on Deep Creek bordering "W. Hobson" (same person from 1831 deed probably). As far as poll tax goes, he was listed with 0 white and 0 black polls.

On 31 Jan 1838 a deed was made among several of Caleb Winfrey's heirs, dividing up his Yadkin river land. Lot # 1 went to his son Thomas Winfrey. Lot # 2 to son Caleb Winfrey and Lot # 3 to son Isaac Winfrey. A plat map was attached showing this land. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book X page 49).

Thomas Winfrey died between 31 Jan 1838 and May 1840, for an Inventory of his estate was made in May 1840 by Mary Winfrey, administrator. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 90).

A tombstone was found for Thomas Winfrey in the Deep Creek Friends Church Cemetery in Yadkin Co, NC (formed from Surry in 1850). The marker showed his death date as 1 Feb 1842. This is from a published cemetery survey, so I'm not sure if it was misread, or if the stone actually says "1842". Estate records show he died after 31 Jan 1838 but before May 1840. The stone gave his age as 47 years, 5 months and 10 days. If his death date was 1840, that would calculate to a birth date of 22 Aug 1792. Or if he died in 1838, that would work out to 22 Aug 1790. Neither of these agree with his 1820 census entry (showing him born ca 1794/1804), but they both work for his 1830 entry (c1790/1800).

Thomas' brother Isaac died just before he did, and his estate was divided up among his siblings on 28 Aug 1840, and Thomas' heirs were named as heirs of Isaac Winfrey. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 14).

On 5 Mar 1841, another Inventory for Thomas Winfrey, deceased was made, this one mentioned John Winfrey. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 185).

In 1842 (the 15th of ---), John Jarvis deeded property to Mary Winfrey. I'm not sure if this is Mary Hamlin Winfrey, widow of Thomas, or Mary Hadley Winfrey, widow of Caleb Sr. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book 4 page 141).

Mary Hadley Winfrey died between 1 Mar 1841 and 10 Mar 1842, for on that latter date, an Inventory of her estate was made by John Winfrey, administrator. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 187).

On 2 Mar 1844, an Inventory was presented for the estates of both Thomas Winfrey, deceased, and Mary Winfrey, deceased, by John Winfrey, administrator. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 262).

Thomas Winfrey has a loose estate file (at the NC Archives) and one document shows his and Mary's heirs to be Caleb, Eunice, Isaac and Hadley Winfrey.

Children

Thomas Winfrey and Mary Hadley had several children, most of them connected only by strong circumstantial evidence. Thomas Loose estate records show only a couple of these.

Nancy Winfrey was born 11 Apr 1818 in Surry Co, NC. (I'm not sure of the source for this date). I've seen no direct proof that Nancy is a child of Thomas and Mary. However, she did name her oldest son "Thomas", and named another son "Caleb", so that seems to connect her. Nancy was not named as an heir in the loose estate records for Thomas and Mary Winfrey (1840-1842).

On 15 Sep 1838 William Davis obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry Nancy Winfrey. Nathan Bond was bondsman.

There were four William Davis' listed on the 1840 census in Surry Co, NC. The one on page 77 seems to be this family.

Although there were several William Davis' found in the 1850 census, none of them were this particular family. Apparently they left Surry Co, NC in the 1840's and moved to Jackson Co, MO. I haven't followed up on this yet. I'm not sure where I got this information, but I believe Stanley Wilde or Richard Hobgood sent it to me. I'm checking on that to be sure.

John Winfrey was born ca 1820/21 in Surry Co, NC. I've seen no direct proof that he is a child of Thomas and Mary, but he did administer both of their estates, so that makes it highly likely that he is their son. John was not named as an heir in the loose estate records for Thomas and Mary Winfrey (1840-1842).

John was apparently home with his father for the 1820 and 1830 census, and with his widowed mother in 1840.

On 5 Mar 1841 John Winfrey was mentioned in an Inventory of the estate of Thomas Winfrey, deceased as having something due to Mary Winfrey. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 185).

On 15 Jan 1842 Thomas Hobson sold property to John Winfrey. No details yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book 2 page 200).

On 10 Mar 1842 John Winfrey was listed as administrator of the estate of his mother Mary Winfrey. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 187).

On 2 Mar 1844 John Winfrey was listed as administrator for both Thomas and Mary Winfrey's estate. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1838-1845 page 262).

Sometime before 1850, John Winfrey married Jane A. Dickerson in Surry Co, NC. I'm not sure of her maiden name, but for the 1850 census, a David Dickerson was residing with the family, a possible brother of Jane. This is my only basis for concluding her name was "Dickerson", so I could be entirely wrong.

In 1850, they were in the Southern division of Surry Co, NC. This was the region south of the Yadkin River. Later in 1850, this entire section of Surry was cut off to form the new county of Yadkin.

I didn't find John, nor Jane on the 1860 census. It is possible they also went to Jackson Co, Missouri to join the rest of the family there. I haven't followed up on them yet.

Caleb Winfrey was born 8 Dec 1823 in Surry Co, NC. (Source for date?). Caleb was named as an heir in the loose estate records for Thomas and Mary Winfrey (1840-1842).

He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census. Before 1850 he moved to Jackson Co, MO. He became a Doctor and died in Kansas City, MO on 23 Jan 1922.

Simon Winfrey was born ca 1824/25 in Surry Co, NC. I've seen no direct proof that Simon is a child of Thomas and Mary. However, there seems no where else for him to go. He is buried in the same cemetery with Thomas, so that helps tie him in.

Simon died on 13 Aug 1832 and is buried at Deep Creek Friends Church Cemetery. His stone says "Simon Winfrey, 13 Aug 1832 age 7".

Isaac Winfrey was born ca 20 Nov 1828 in Surry Co, NC. (Date based on age at death). Isaac was named as an heir in the loose estate records for Thomas and Mary Winfrey (1840-1842).

Isaac was apparently with his parents for the 1830 and 1840 census. By 1850 he had gone to Jackson Co, MO (with several siblings), where he died on 6 Oct 1857. A death record shows his age as 28 years, 10 months and 16 days, which calculates to a birth date of 20 Nov 1828. I can't find a source for this death record, whether a tombstone, or something else.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1825/1830. A girl this age was with Thomas Winfrey in 1830, and with his widow Mary in 1840. This must be Eunice Winfrey who was named as an heir in the loose estate records for Thomas and Mary Winfrey (1840-1842). Nothing else is known of her.

Thomas Hadley Winfrey was born ca 22 Sep 1831 in Surry Co, NC (birth date based on age listed on tombstone). "Hadley" was named as an heir in the loose estate records for Thomas and Mary Winfrey (1840-1842).

I have no direct proof that his name was actually "Thomas Hadley" Winfrey. His tombstone has "T.H. Winfrey", and the name I have listed is an assumption, which would make since since his dad was "Thomas" and his mother a Hadley.

T. H. Winfrey died on 31 Jul 1846 in Surry Co, NC (now Yadkin) and is buried at Deep Creek Friends Church Cemetery, where his father and brother is buried. His tombstone shows "T.H. Winfrey 31 Jul 1846 age 14 years 10 months 9 days". This is how his birth date was calculated to be 22 Sep 1831.
