[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Caleb Winfrey and Nancy Bowles.
Special thanks to Jim Cockerham, Stanley Wilde and others for data shared on this family.
Caleb Winfrey was born ca 1755/60, probably in VA. Caleb Winfrey is almost certainly a son of Isaac and Sarah Winfrey. I've seen no direct proof of their relationship, but circumstantial evidence in abundant.
It seems that our Winfrey family may have sided with the British during the American Revolution, or at least been sympathetic to them (i.e. Tories).
Jeff Weaver found records showing suspected Tories in the Upper New River area circa 1780. This list included the names of Isaac Winfrey (his father) and Caleb Winfrey. Jeff states that the list was from the Lyman Draper Papers, and he said that the list was of people who refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia, either because they were Quakers (refused to take any kind of oath) or because they were Tories (loyal to the British authorities). Another researcher has told me that this list was not of suspected Tories at all.
In 1780 (the time of the above list), the New River flowed through Wilkes Co, NC (now Ashe and Alleghany Counties), flowing north into Virginia into what is now Grayson Co, VA, but was then part of Montgomery Co, VA (Wythe County was formed from that part of Montgomery in 1789/90 and later Grayson was formed from Wythe in 1792/93).
Another record, also found on Jeff Weaver's web site, shows a "Calop Winfrey" on Flower Swifts Militia Roster (undated). This would be for service with the Americans, or "Patriots", and I don't know if this was before or after he was put on the suspected Tory list.
So it would seem that the Winfrey's lived in old Montgomery (now Grayson) Co, VA in that timeframe. However, they had moved to Surry Co, NC by 1782 and lived somewhere between Mitchells River and Elkin Creek. I don't know if they owned land there or not, but this puts them on or near the Surry-Wilkes County border.
Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1787 state census in Wilkes Co, NC next to his father Isaac Winfrey. Caleb was living by himself, so apparently he hadn't married yet.
1784-1787 NC census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Caleb was listed on the 1787 and 1788 tax lists in Wilkes Co, NC, both times in Captain Hardin's company. In 1787 he was charged for 1 poll tax, and for 300 acres. In 1788 it was still 1 poll tax, but 325 acres.
It was around 1788 when Caleb Winfrey married Nancy Bowles, probably in Surry Co, NC. She was a daughter of Thomas Bowles and Sarah Burch of VA and Surry Co, NC.
On 3 Apr 1789, both Caleb and his wife Nancy witnessed a Wilkes County deed between Thomas Wilmouth and William Owen Medlin for land on Big Elkin. Isaac Winfrey also witnessed, and John Burch and James Bradbury. Of interest was that while Nancy and Caleb signed their names as "Winfrey", Isaac signed his "Winfree". (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B1 page 68).
On 3 Jun 1789, Caleb Winfrey witnessed a deed between Francis Calloway of Wilkes Co, GA to Isaac Winfrey of Wilkes Co, NC for 275 acres on the south fork of Mitchells River. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book D page 426).
On 11 Aug 1789 Caleb Winfrey proved the above deed (Calloway to Isaac Winfrey) in Surry County Court.
Though he was married, and should be listed somewhere, I was not able to locate Caleb Winfrey on the 1790 census. His father was in Wilkes Co, NC census for that year, but no sign of Caleb.
On 22 Jan 1793 Caleb Winfrey "of Wilkes Co, NC" purchased two tracts of land in Surry Co, NC (in two different deeds) from William Watts. The first was 199 acres on South Fork of Mitchells River, the second was 60 acres same location. Both deeds were witnessed by William Burch and Obediah Winfrey. This was Caleb's brother-in-law and his brother. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book F page 168 and 193).
On 15 Jul 1793, Nancy was named in some of the estate papers for Thomas Bowles as his heir, and listed as "Nancy Winfrey".
On 16 May 1799 James Downey sold property to Caleb Winfrey. I don't have the details yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book H page 165).
Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1800 census in Surry Co, NC, just two pages from his father Isaac and brother Obediah Winfrey.

On 3 Sep 1801 Caleb Winfrey witnessed the Will of John Burch in Surry Co, NC. (Surry Co, NC Wills Book 3 page 47).
On 25 Feb 1804 Thomas Hadley sold property to Caleb Winfrey. I don't have details of this yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book L page 203).
On 10 Feb 1807 James Fitzgerald, Sheriff of Surry, sold property to Caleb Winfrey. No details yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 327).
On 7 Mar 1808 Caleb Winfrey served in Surry County court as a juror.
On 10 Mar 1808, Caleb Winfrey proved 4 days and 13 miles attendance as a Juror.
Nancy Bowles Winfrey died sometime around November 1809, most likely. For on 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey made several deeds of gift to his children, and he remarried in December of 1809. The deeds were probably to insure the children by his first wife received a fair share of his estate.
On 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey gave a deed of gift to his "sons" Isaac Winfrey, Thomas Winfrey, Caleb Winfrey and John Winfrey, property in Surry Co, NC. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 319).
Also on 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey gave a deed of gift to his "daughters" Sarah Winfree and Mollie Winfree. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 320).
On 8 Dec 1809 Caleb Winfree obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry Polly Hamlin. William Hamlin was bondsman (possibly her father or brother).
Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1810 census in Surry Co, NC, not particularly close to any of the other Winfreys.

On 6 Sep 1811 Caleb was on a Surry County jury as part of an inquisition to determine the cause of death of William Critchfield on 6 Apr 1811.
On 28 Mar 1814 Caleb Winfrey sold property to Pleasant B. Roberts (his brother-in-law, married to Mary Bowles). (Surry Co, NC Deed Book N page 444).
Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1815 Tax list in Surry County. He was listed with 500 acres on the Yadkin River, and had 0 white polls (meaning he was too old to be taxed?) and 3 black polls.
On 15 Feb 1815 Caleb Winfrey and his brother-in-law William Burch were listed as guardians of his father Isaac Winfrey in his Estate records. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 107).
On 9 May 1815 Caleb Winfrey and William Burch made an Account of the estate of Isaac and Sarah Winfrey. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 114).
Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1816 Surry tax list, with the same details as in 1815.
On 13 Feb 1816 William Burch and Caleb Winfrey were listed in an account settlement for the estate of Isaac Winfrey. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 127).
In Feb 1817 William Burch and Caleb Winfrey were again mentioned as guardians of Isaac Winfrey in his estate records. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 209).
Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1820 census in Surry Co, NC

On 10 Apr 1822 John Wright, Sheriff of Surry County, sold property to Caleb Winfrey. No details yet. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book S page 433).
Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1830 census in Surry Co, NC, not particularly close to the other Winfreys.
1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Caleb Winfrey was listed on the 1835 Surry Co, NC Tax list, still with 500 acres on the Yadkin River, but he was listed with "guardian" Lemuel B. Jones, indicating he was probably in very bad health and not able to handle his own affairs.
Caleb Winfrey "Sr" died 16 Jan 1837 in Surry Co, NC. This was noted in Pleasant B. Roberts Bible. Roberts was Caleb's brother-in-law (they had married Bowles sisters). (Thanks to Jim Cockerham for information from the Pleasant B. Roberts Bible).
On 31 Jan 1838 a deed was made among several of Caleb Winfrey's heirs, dividing up his Yadkin river land. Lot # 1 went to his son Thomas Winfrey. Lot # 2 to son Caleb Winfrey and Lot # 3 to son Isaac Winfrey. A plat map was attached showing this land. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book X page 49).
Caleb Winfrey Sr has a loose estate file (at the NC Archives) and one document shows his heirs to be Thomas Roberts and wife Nancy; Isaac Copeland and wife Elizabeth; Caleb Winfrey, Thomas Winfrey, Mary Holbrook and Isaac Winfrey.
I didn't find Caleb's widow Mary Hamlin Winfrey on the 1840 census, but someone her age was residing with Elizabeth Copeland, who is most likely Caleb and Mary's daughter Elizabeth Winfrey (c1815) who married Isaac Copeland in 1833. He died in early 1840, and Elizabeth was listed as a widow on the 1840 census. She married James Badgett in 1845. There was a widow Mary Winfrey listed on the 1840 census in Surry Co, NC though, but it was Mary Hadley Winfrey, widow of Thomas Winfrey instead of Mary, Caleb's widow.
In 1850 Mary (Hamlin) Winfrey was next to James Badgett and his wife Elizabeth Winfrey Copeland Badgett, so it seems highly likely that was Mary with Elizabeth in 1840 as well. On the 1850 census, they were listed in Surry Co, NC in the Northern Division, Marsh District. Mary was listed in her own household, but by her self. Daughter Elizabeth was next door.

In 1860, Mary was listed in Surry Co, NC still, and in Dobson Township. She was residing with the Thomas and Martha Sprinkle family. Relationship unknown.

Mary died sometime after 1860, presumably in Surry Co, NC.
Caleb Winfrey's children by his first wife Nancy Bowles are well proven by various deed and estate records. His children by his second wife are also proven.
Isaac Winfrey (c1794/1800-1838)
Isaac Winfrey was born ca 1794/1800, presumably in Surry Co, NC (though it could have been in Wilkes County). Isaac is a proven son of Caleb Winfrey. After the death of Caleb's first wife Nancy Bowles, he deeded property to his children, just before he remarried.
On 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey gave a deed of gift to his "sons" Isaac Winfrey, Thomas Winfrey, Caleb Winfrey and John Winfrey, property in Surry Co, NC. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 319).
Isaac was apparently home with his father for the 1810 census.
For the War of 1812, Isaac Winfrey enlisted in the 5th Regiment, Surry County 1st Regiment. This was dated August 1814.
Isaac Winfrey was listed on the 1816 tax list in Surry Co, NC and had no land, but charged a poll tax for 1 white.
I didn't find Isaac Winfrey on the 1820 census, nor did he seem to be residing with his father Caleb (though he had just one boy age 16-25 (c1794/1804) with him in 1820, I can't be sure if it was Isaac or one of his brothers). Isaac was probably residing with another family as a laborer.
By the same token, I didn't find Isaac listed on the 1830 census either.
Isaac Winfrey "Jr" died on 8 Jul 1838 in Surry Co, NC as noted in the Pleasant B. Roberts family bible. (Thanks to Jim Cockerham for that data).
On 20 Sep 1838 an Inventory of Isaac Winfrey's estate was made by Thomas B. Roberts, administrator. (Roberts was Isaac's brother-in-law, having married Nancy Winfrey, Isaac's half sister). (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 1838-1845 page 56).
On 28 Aug 1840 Isaac Winfrey's land was divided up among his living heirs, which were Mary Holbrook, John Jarvis, Caleb Winfrey and the heirs of Thomas Winfrey, decd. These were his siblings, and in the case of John Jarvis, a brother-in-law. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 14).
As far as can be determined, Isaac Winfrey never married, considering his siblings were named as his heirs. If he did marry, his wife must have died before he did.
Thomas Winfrey was born ca 1790/1800, or possibly on 22 Aug 1792 (see his tombstone information below) presumably in Surry Co, NC (though it could have been in Wilkes County). Thomas is a proven son of Caleb Winfrey. After the death of Caleb's first wife Nancy Bowles, he deeded property to his children, just before he remarried:
On 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey gave a deed of gift to his "sons" Isaac Winfrey, Thomas Winfrey, Caleb Winfrey and John Winfrey, property in Surry Co, NC. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 319).
Sometime between 1810 and 1817, Thomas Winfrey married Mary Hadley. A marriage bond was found dated 2 Nov 18-- (the rest of the year was unreadable). Joel Burch was the bondsman. He was Thomas' 1st cousin.
Thomas Winfrey died between 31 Jan 1838 and May 1840.
See his own page for additional information on him.
Sarah Winfrey was born ca 1790/1794, in either Surry or Wilkes Co, NC.
Sarah is a proven child of Caleb Winfrey. After the death of Caleb's first wife Nancy Bowles, he deeded property to his children, just before he remarried.
On 20 Nov 1809 Caleb Winfrey gave a deed of gift to his "daughters" Sarah Winfree and Mollie Winfree. (Surry Co, NC Deed Book M page 320).
Sarah wasn't home with Caleb for the 1810 census, so that could mean she married shortly after the 1809 deed, or was just residing in another household in 1810 (as domestic help, possibly).
Sarah Winfrey apparently married John Jarvis at some point.
I didn't find them on the 1810 census, but there was a John Jarvis in neighboring Wilkes Co, NC. However, records show him to be the John Jarvis who married Sarah Chambers in 1811, and most likely not the same one who married Sarah Winfrey.
When Sarah Winfrey Jarvis' brother Isaac Winfrey died, his estate was divided up (on 28 Aug 1840) among his living siblings, including Mary Holbrook, John Jarvis, Caleb Winfrey and the heirs of Thomas Winfrey, decd. (Surry Co, NC Estate Book 2 page 14).
Since John Jarvis was named, and Sarah was not, that may be an indication that she was dead, otherwise she would have been named (though often the spouse of the heir was named instead of the heir in these kinds of records). Sarah Winfrey was the only other full sibling of Caleb, Isaac, Thomas, Mary (other than John who had died unmarried), so this record is the only proof I've seen that she was married to John Jarvis. So we know that John Jarvis was an heir of Isaac Winfrey, listed among his siblings, so the only logical conclusion is that he was a brother-in-law, married to Isaac's sister. And since Sarah is his only sister unaccounted for, it must be her.
Just before the 1840 estate of her brother Isaac, another record was made showing heirs of Caleb Winfrey Sr. This was an 1838 petition by Isaac Copeland and wife Elizabeth and Thomas Roberts and wife Nancy, where Elizabeth andn Nancy were mentioned as Caleb's youngest daughter, and that they were half siblings to Caleb, Thomas and Isaac Winfrey and Mary Holbrook. Since Sarah wasn't mentioned, it can be assumed she was dead by 1838. (Surry Co, NC Loose Estates - Caleb Winfrey 1838)
There was a John Jarvis born ca 1797 in Surry Co, NC at the time, who could easily be the one. He married Elizabeth Roberts in Surry in 1827. They are listed on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census in Surry. Elizabeth could certainly be his second wife. They had no children with them in 1830 or 1850. I'm half convinced this is the one, but more evidence would be helpful.
The John Jarvis of neighboring Wilkes County and his wife Sarah threw me off track for awhile, thinking they were these two that I'm looking for. However, ample evidence exists showing that John Jarvis (c1787) marrying Sarah Chambers in Wilkes Co, NC in 1811, and one their children was even named "Chambers Jarvis", so that eliminates them as possibilities.
The only way that John Jarvis of Wilkes could be the same one is if he married Sarah Winfrey between 20 Nov 1809 and 19 March 1811 (when he married Sarah Chambers). And the only way he would be named as an heir of Isaac Winfrey would be if he and Sarah Winfrey had children together. Since I can't find another John Jarvis, I can't help but wonder if this scenario is the accurate one. They wouldn't have had much time together, so perhaps they would have had only one child. This is theoretical, and the true answer may be that John Jarvis and Sarah Winfrey married ca 1809-1810, and moved away somewhere. Whoever he was, John Jarvis was apparently still alive in 1840.
More research is needed to sort this out.
Caleb Winfrey was born ca 1799/1800, in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. Caleb is a proven son of Caleb Winfrey.
Caleb Winfrey married Arabella Moody ca 1821 in Surry Co, NC. She was a daughter of John Moody and Mary Roberts.
Caleb and family moved to Cherokee Co, NC ca 1840-1841. See his own page for additional information.
John Winfrey was born ca 1800/1809 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. John is a proven son of Caleb Winfrey.
John was apparently home with his father for the 1810 census and in 1820.
On 3 Jan 1826 John Winfrey signed as bondsman for his sister Mary Winfrey to marry Caleb Holbrook in Surry Co, NC.
John Winfrey was apparently home with his father Caleb for the 1830 census.
John was listed on the 1835 tax list for Surry Co, NC and charged for 1 white poll tax.
John Winfrey died on 18 Jan 1835 in Surry Co, NC. This was recorded in the Pleasant B. Roberts Family Bible. (Thanks to Jim Cockerham for that info).
In Feb 1836 John's estate was Inventoried by Lemuel B. Jones. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1835-1838 page 157).
On 11 Nov 1837 a Settlement of John Winfrey's estate was made by Lemuel B. Jones. (Surry Co, NC Estates 1835-1838 page 298).
As far as I can determine, John Winfrey never married.
Mary Winfrey was born ca 1807/08 in Surry Co, NC, presumably in the Mitchells River area. Mary is a proven child of Caleb Winfrey.
"Mollie" is a common nickname for Mary.
Mary was apparently home with her father Caleb Winfrey for the 1810 and 1820 census.
On 3 Jan 1826 Caleb Holbrook obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry Mary Winfrey. Her brother John Winfrey was bondsman. Caleb Holbrook was Mary Winfrey's 1st cousin, a son of Ralph Holbrook and Jane Winfrey (sister of Caleb Winfrey Sr).
Caleb Holbrook was listed on the 1830 census in Wilkes Co, NC.

I need to do some additional work on this family.
Elizabeth Winfrey was born ca 1814/15 in Surry Co, NC. She is a proven child of Caleb Winfrey, by his 2nd wife.
Caleb Winfrey had a daughter Elizabeth's age with him for the 1820 and 1830 census.
On 23 Jul 1833 Isaac Copeland Jr obtained a marriage bond in Surry Co, NC to marry Elizabeth Winfrey. Edward M. Dobson was the bondsman.
In 1838, Isaac Copeland and wife Elizabeth and Thomas Roberts and wife Nancy petitioned for part of the estate of Elizabeth and Nancy's father Caleb Winfrey Sr, mentioning that they were half siblings to Caleb, Thomas and Isaac Winfrey and Mary Holbrook. (Surry Co, NC Loose Estates - Caleb Winfrey 1838)
Isaac Copeland died on 26 Apr 1840 in Surry Co, NC. His widow Elizabeth was listed as head of household. She had an older woman with her the right age to be her mother, Mary Hamlin Winfrey, widow of Caleb.
