I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin, 6 times removed of William Winfrey.

William Winfrey was born ca 1804/1810 in either Surry or Stokes Co, NC.

William Winfrey is almost certainly a son of Obediah and Lucinda Winfrey, though I've seen no direct proof of their relationship, but circumstantial evidence seems to suggest it. They had a son this age, William lived in the same county, and in 1830 he was very near his mother on the Stokes Co, NC census.

William Winfrey seemed to be home with his parents for the early census records, 1810 and 1820 in Stokes.

On 13 Jun 1827, William Winfrey obtained a marriage bond in Stokes Co, NC to marry Sarah Fulps.

He was listed on the 1830 census in Stokes Co, NC near his widowed mother.

1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Son?
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	Sarah FULPS Winfrey (1800/10) wife

I didn't find William on the 1840 census, at least not in NC.

I didn't find William or Sarah on the 1850 census either. There was another William Winfrey in Stokes Co, NC in 1850. This one and his entire family were listed as born in VA, except their youngest child born ca 1850, who was born in NC. It is quite possible this is the same William Winfrey, but at present, I don't think so. This other William had a wife named Elizabeth. Another possibility is that the William listed in 1850 Stokes is the same William, but with a second wife. Although I don't think this is the same William, here is the census listing anyway.

Of possible interest is a Sarah Winfrey age 19 (born ca 1830/31) living in Forsyth Co, NC in 1850 (Forsyth was formed from the southern part of Stokes in 1849). This Sarah was residing with a 70 year old George Fulp. My first thought about this was that this Sarah is a child of William Winfrey and Sarah Fulps, and that here she is residing with her grandfather George Fulps. This may be because her parents had died, or perhaps only her mother had died, so she was raised by her grandparents (if the William in 1850 Stokes is the same one under study here, but with a second wife). It wasn't unusual for a child to be raised by grandparents while the father was still alive, but remarried.

I need to follow up on these folks in 1860 and more recent census records.

Children

William and Sarah Fulps Winfrey had at least one child, per the 1830 census. I suspect Sarah is another child.

Unknown Son (c1825/30) with William in 1830 Stokes Co, NC.

Sarah Winfrey (c1830/31) with George Fulps in 1850 Forsyth Co, NC.
