Baker Genealogy - Western NC
Welcome to my Baker genealogy pages. I am interested in the Baker surname in Western North Carolina.
Baker was the 38th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 44th.
I have two Baker lines that *could* be connected, but it seems unlikely. They were both in Western North Carolina, but not the same counties.
Line one: My six times great grandmother, Olly Baker, was born ca 1768. She married Aaron Cox in 1787 Lincoln Co., NC. They were in Buncombe Co., NC by ca 1805. They lived there, and in neighboring Haywood Co., NC the remainder of their lives. Aaron died in the 1840s, and Olly in 1849. They had six probable children, not all proven. Olly’s parents are unknown, nor have I identified any probable siblings.
Line two: My five times great grandmother, Mary Margaret Baker, was born ca 1790 in Rowan Co., NC. She, with her parents, moved to Ashe Co., NC ca 1801. She married Jacob Fouts there before ca 1807. They remained in Ashe until the 1830s when they moved to Macon Co., NC where he died in 1852 and she in 1858. Mary Margaret’s parents aren’t proven, but I’m fairly confident about who her parents were.
Capt. Jacob Baker (c1760/65-1830s) and unknown wife. He lived on Grants Creek in Rowan Co., NC in the 1780s and 1790s. He moved to Ashe Co., NC ca 1801. He was in Wilkes by 1810 but back to Ashe after that. He might have died in Cherokee Co., NC, but that isn’t proven. His parents are unknown.
