Barnes Genealogy - SC, NC

Welcome to my Barnes genealogy pages. I am interested in the Barnes families of Marion Co., SC, and adjacent counties. (I have another, unrelated Barnes line from PA and NC.)

Barnes was the 99^th most common surname in the United States in 2000, and 110^th in 2010.

My most recent Barnes ancestor is my four times great grandmother Mary “Molsey” Barnes (c1792-1872) who married James Campbell (1780-1842) in Marion Dist., SC ca 1815.

W. W. Sellers, in his A History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902 is the only source for Mary’s maiden name (p. 486):

James Campbell, Jr, married Miss Molsey (Mary) Barnes, and had Ebby and James, and three daughters.

Unfortunately, Mr. Sellers didn’t include a Barnes section in his wonderful book. There were a few Barnes families in Marion Dist., SC in those days, all seemingly part of the same extended family. Unfortunately I don’t know how Mary fits in with any of them, nor who her parents were. There was a notable Barnes population in (then) neighboring Robeson Co., NC. She may have connections with them, or perhaps not. All records we have for her show her born in South Carolina, so her family was in the Marion area by ca 1792.

I have no strong suspects yet for the parents of Mary Barnes.
