Bowles Genealogy - Virginia, Western North Carolina

Welcome to my Bowles genealogy pages. I am interested in the Bowles surname in Virginia and Western NC. My own ancestors resided in Surry Co., NC, and may have originated in Middlesex Co., VA (not proven yet).

The Bowles surname is generally of English origin. The name can also be spelled Boles, Bowls and a few other ways.

Neither Bowles nor Boles or other variations made the Top 1000 most common surnames in the United States in 2000 or 2010.

My most recent Bowles ancestor was my 5 times Great Grandmother Nancy Bowles (1770/74-c1809). She was born in Surry Co., NC and married there ca 1788 to Caleb Winfrey (1755/60-1837). She is a proven child of Thomas and Sarah (Burch) Bowles.

Thomas Bowles (1744-c1781) was born in Middlesex Co.,VA. He was later in Albemarle Co., VA where he married Sarah Burch ca 1770. They soon moved to Surry Co., NC where both died. Thomas Bowles is a son of John and Mary (—) Bowles.

John Bowles (c1723-?) married Mary (—) ca 1743, perhaps in Middlesex Co., VA. Their family was recorded in the Christ Church Parish Register (Middlesex Co., VA). I don’t know who his parents are.
