Welcome to my Bruce genealogy pages. I am interested in the Bruce surname primarily in South Carolina. However, my Bruce family probably originated in Virginia before that.

Bruce was the 583rd most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 636th.

My most recent Bruce ancestor is my six times great grandmother, Mrs. Burt Moore. Unfortunately we don’t know her given name. Her husband was born ca 1756, so she may be of similar age. They married prior to ca 1778, probably in South Carolina. She died sometime in the 1790s in Pendleton Dist., SC (now Pickens Co., SC). Mrs. Moore is a proven daughter of:

James Bruce, born ca 1730s (rough estimate), possibly in Virginia, though that isn’t certain. He was in Pendleton Dist., SC from the late 1700s through his death there ca 1819. His wife Mary died there sometime after 1820. James Bruce’s parents are unidentified.

James’s son-in-law, Burt Moore, was from Halifax Co., VA originally. It is possible James Bruce was also from there as there were Bruce families in that county in the 1700s. Then again, Bruce’s were found in various parts of Virginia in the 1700s.
