Welcome to my Burch genealogy pages. I am interested in the Burch surname in Virginia and Western NC. My own ancestors resided in Surry Co., NC, and may have originated in Caroline and Albemarle Co., VA.

The Burch surname is generally of English or Scottish origin. The name is also spelled Birch on some older records.

Burch was the 891st most common surname in the United States in 2000. It dropped to 958th by 2010. I imagine it may have fallen out of the top 1000 by now.

My most recent Burch ancestor is my 6 times Great Grandmother, Sarah Burch (bef 1755-1814) who was probably born in Caroline Co., VA. She married 1st to Thomas Bowles (1744-c1781) ca 1770, likely in Albemarle Co., VA. They moved to Surry Co., NC right after marriage. She married 2nd, ca 1786 to John Shores in Surry Co., NC. Sarah is a proven child of Thomas and Ann (—) Burch.

Thomas Burch (c1700-1775) was thrice married, 1st to Hannah Cheadle ca 1725, 2nd to Ann (—) ca 1741 (my line), and 3rd to Sarah (—) ca 1761. He had children with all three wives. Other researchers concluded he was born in King William Co., VA and lived in Caroline a number of years, later moving to Albemarle Co., VA where he died. I haven’t done a ton of research on him yet, so for now I’m relying on what was shared with me by others many years ago.

Thomas’s parents aren’t yet known.
