Welcome to my Childress genealogy pages. I am interested in the Childress surname in Virginia and Tennessee. My own ancestors were in Buckingham Co., VA and perhaps also in Washington Co., VA and Sullivan and Knox Co., TN.

The Childress surname is generally of English origin. It is a variant of the more common name Childers.

Neither Childress or Childers made the Top 1000 most common surname lists for the United States in 2000 or 2010.

My most recent Childress ancestor is my 5 times Great Grandmother, Sarah Childress (c1767-c1820s). She was possibly born in Buckingham Co., VA, but that isn’t certain. Her husband Larkin Hensley (c1765-c1805) was from there, but they married ca 1788 perhaps in Washington Co., VA, so maybe her family was there at that time and not necessary also from Buckingham. They resided in the section of Washington that became Scott Co., VA later. After her husband’s death, she moved into neighboring Sullivan Co., TN for a short while, then to Knox Co., TN by 1808 where she may have died, or perhaps she died in Blount Co., TN instead. I’m not sure.

Her parents are unidentified. There are numerous suspects in Buckingham Co., VA in the period she may have lived there.
