Welcome to my Crawford genealogy pages. I am interested in the Crawford surname in Marion Co., SC and that general area.

Crawford is generally of English or Scottish origin. “Crofford” is the most common alternate spelling that I’ve come across, though I think only the record keepers spelled it that way, not the families themselves.

Crawford was the 146th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to a little to 155th.

My most recent Crawford ancestor is my 5 times Great Grandmother, Hepsabeth Crawford (1752-1820s). She married Osborne Lane (1750/55-1840) ca late 1760s in Georgetown Dist., SC in what later became Marion Dist., SC. She is a proven daughter of James and Keziah (Saunders) Crawford.

James Crawford was born ca 1720 or earlier. He married Keziah Saunders in 1739 in Prince Frederick Parish, SC. He died in 1753, she sometime after that.

I don’t know who James’s parents are.
