Cribb Genealogy - Marion Co., SC
Welcome to my Cribb genealogy pages. I am interested in the Cribb surname in Marion Co., SC and that general area.
Cribb is an English surname. “Cribbs” is the most common alternate spelling that I’ve seen. However, in some cases Cribbs is an Anglicized version of the German surname Kribs or Krebs. In those instances, there’s no connection the English surname Cribb other than similarity.
Neither Cribb nor Cribbs made the Top 1000 surname lists for the United States in 2000 or 2010. In 1990 Cribb was the 8,582nd most common surname in American, with Cribbs ranked 6,500th, making it more common.
My most recent Cribb ancestor is my 5 times Great Grandmother, Ann (“Nancy”) Cribb (1757-c1818) who married John Campbell (1752-c1810) ca 1774 in Georgetown Dist., SC (now Marion Co., SC). They lived in the Maiden Down Creek/Swamp area north of Mullins, SC. Ann is *probably* a child of John Cribb who had land in Maiden Down.
John Cribb (1729-aft 1792) was born in what was then Craven Co., SC. His wife hasn’t been identified yet. He is a proven son of John and Elizabeth (—) Cribb as named in Church records.
John Cribb (bef 1696-aft 1736) may have been born in England and came to South Carolina as a child or a young man perhaps already married.
I don’t know who the elder John Cribb’s parents are.
I don’t know who James’s parents are.
