Evans Genealogy - SC and Western NC
Welcome to my Evans genealogy pages. I am interested in the Evans surname in Western North Carolina.
Evans was the 48th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 53rd.
My most recent Evans ancestor is my three times Great Grandmother, Darthula Jane Evans. She was born 1843 in Buncombe Co., NC. She married John Patton Grant in 1868 in Jackson (now Swain) Co., NC. They lived there until ca 1905 when they moved to Union Co., GA where both died in 1917. Her parents:
William Evans was born somewhere in South Carolina ca 1813. He was in Buncombe Co., NC by ca 1838/39 where he married Phoebe Caroline Graham. They lived there in the Avery Creek area until the 1850s when they moved to Jackson Co., NC, then moved again the 1860s to Macon Co., NC in the part that later became Swain County where they remained until their deaths, his in 1882, hers in 1899.
I don’t know who William’s parents are. I have no strong leads. There were other Evans families in Western NC who also originated in South Carolina. He may be connected to one or more of them.
