Floyd Genealogy - Horry Co., SC
Welcome to my Floyd genealogy pages. I am interested in the Floyd surname in Horry Co., SC and that general area.
Floyd is generally an English or Welsh surname.
Floyd was the 469th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped somewhat to 505th.
My most recent Floyd ancestor is my 3 times Great Grandmother, Celia Floyd (1823-aft 1880). She was born in Horry Dist., SC. She married 1st to a cousin, Hugh Floyd (c1820-c1847) ca 1842. They had three children. After Hugh’s death she married, 2nd, Allen W. Johnson (c1826-c1865) ca 1851 in Horry Dist., SC. They had five children. After Allen’s death, she married, 3rd, to a Mr. Jolly, whom we haven’t been able to identify yet. They married after 1865 and he apparently died before 1870. They had no children that we know of. Celia married, 4th, to Alfred Watts in the 1870s. She died between 1880 and 1900. Mr. Watts remarried and died sometime after 1900. Celia is a child of Pugh and Jane (Graham) Floyd.
Pugh Floyd (1791-1876) was born in Georgetown Dist., SC, Kingston Parish, which is the section that became Horry Dist., SC in 1801. He married Jane Graham (1795-1860s) in 1813 in Horry. They had fifteen children. Pugh married, 2nd, to Charity Pitman (d 1869) in the 1860s. They had no children together. Pugh married, 3rd, to Sarah Hewitt (c1828-aft 1880) in 1870 in Columbus Co., NC. She was a widow of Bennett Page (c1828-1865) with whom she had at least 5 children. She and Pugh Floyd had none together. Pugh Floyd is a son of James and Elizabeth (Lewis) Floyd.
James Floyd (c1753-1828) was born in North Carolina. James married Elizabeth Lewis (1755/65-1810s) ca 1782, either in Dobbs Co., NC (now Greene Co., NC) or perhaps in the section of Georgetown Dist.,SC that later became Horry, which is where they lived their entire married lives. James is probably a son of Samuel Floyd (Sr) (d aft 1800) who has a proven son named James per his 1769 Dobbs Co., NC tax list entry. More research is needed to prove that it’s the same James.
I don’t know who Samuel Floyd’s parents were, nor where he originated, though I suspect he came from the north eastern section of NC prior to moving to the Dobbs County area.
