David Henslee (1755/65) and Mary Payne of Caswell and Rockingham Co, NC and Franklin Co, GA and Cherokee Co, AL

This family used the "Henslee" spelling most often, though some records were with the "Hensley" or other spellings. See "Hensley Spellings" for a commentary on this subject.

David Henslee was born ca 1755/65 per an analysis of his various census records. In 1786 he was aged 21-60, or born ca 1726/65. In 1800 he was 26-44, or born ca 1755/74. (Combining these two we get ca 1755/65). In 1810 he was age 45 and up, or born before 1765. Combining all of these you get an approximate birth year range of ca 1755-65. David was probably born in Hanover County, Virginia, which is where his parents were in that timeframe.

Mackfield moved his family from Hanover Co, VA to what is now Caswell Co, NC between ca 1763 and 1777, so it would seem that David spent about half of his childhood in Virginia, the other half in North Carolina.

David Henslee married Mary Payne before ca 1786 in Caswell County, North Carolina. Her maiden name is unproven. Cindy Stamps stated that it was Family knowledge in her family about her being a "Payne", but she has not found any hard evidence to prove it, though it does seem likely to be correct. Mary was born ca 1760/65 (per census analysis), though I don't know whether in Caswell County, North Carolina or somewhere else. (Caswell was still part of Orange County in that timeframe).

The 1786 State Census for North Carolina shows David Henslee in Caswell County with himself and one apparent son. No females were listed, so does this mean that his first wife had died (that would make Mary the 2nd wife), or was this census taken just prior to David marrying (and the young man with him could be a younger brother instead of a son).

They were probably still in Caswell for the 1790 census, but unfortunately this census was lost for Caswell County.

On 11 Oct 1793, David's brother William Henslee made his Will in Caswell County, and named his heirs (namely his siblings) including his brother David whom he named Executor along with brother John Henslee. (Caswell Co, NC Will Book C page 54, shared with me by Laura Schreibman)

On 31 Dec 1794, David's father Mackfield Henslee made his Will in Caswell County, and named his heirs including son David to receive 158 acres after his mother's death. On 23 Apr 1795, David's father Mackfield Henslee deeded him 172 acres on Stoney Creek in Caswell County. Witnesses were John Henslee and John Mitchell, (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book J page 58, shared with me by Laura Schreibman)

On 24 Apr 1799, David Henslee witnessed a deed from John Payne of Rockingham Co, NC to Nathan Williams of Caswell. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book L page 133, shared with me by Laura Schreibman)

David Henslee was in Caswell County for the 1800 census, in fact he was listed twice (or another David Henslee was there at the same time). The listings are almost identical, but with one minor difference. The are close enough for me to be reasonably sure that the two listings are for the same David Henslee family, and for some reason he was enumerated twice. I'll give both listings below for comparison. On the first listing, David was not listed near any other Henslees. His neighbor on one side was Thomas Shade (or Slade, or Spade, I couldn't quite make out the name), and Solomon Parks on the other side.

David's other entry in 1800 Caswell was identical except in the apparent age of son John P. Henslee (though not listed by name). He was at the right age to fit into either of two categories, and this listing has him in the older category as compared to the previous listing. This other entry places David next to his brother John Henslee and two houses from their father Mackfield.

Sometime around this time (1806), David moved his family to neighboring Rockingham County, North Carolina.

David was listed on the 1810 census in Rockingham Co, NC, not too far from son Enoch Henslee. David's neighbors on either side were John Linder Sr and Jeremiah Nickalls (Nichols?).

David Henslee moved his family to Franklin County, Georgia between ca 1813 and 1817.

On 29 May 1817, David Hensley purchased land from Charles and Barbara Sesson. The deed was witnessed by David's son William Henslee. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for sharing this record).

David Hensle was listed on the 1818 tax list in Franklin Co, GA and taxed for 250 acres (same land purchased in 1817) and 19 Negroes. David's sons Enoch and David S. Henslee were also listed. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for sharing this record).

David may have been listed on the 1820 census in Franklin County, Georgia, but unfortunately the census is lost for that particular county. However, there is a David Hensley listed way south of there in Emanuel County, Georgia in 1820. It is possible that it is the same David if he moved there during 1820. Further evidence that it is the same David is that David was not listed on the 1821 and later tax records in Franklin County, Georgia. However (again), on closer inspection it seems that the David Hensley of 1820 Emanuel Co, GA is actually a David Henley instead of "Hensley". I also noticed several "Hensey" and "Hendley" listings nearby him. Pending other evidence to the contrary, I'm not considering this David in Emanuel Co, GA a Hensley at all.

So, based on the evidence (or lack thereof), it seems that David Henslee died sometime after 1820, perhaps in Franklin County, Georgia, or possibly after migrating to some other county.

It seems almost certain that widow Mary Payne Henslee was residing with their son William Henslee for the 1830 census (in Troupe Co, GA), or at least someone her age was with William.

Mary Payne Henslee was listed as head of household on the 1840 census in Cherokee Co, AL next to son John P. Henslee and several of her other children and grandchildren were there also that year.

I did not find Mary on the 1850 census, so it would seem she died between 1840 and 1850. She may have died in Cherokee Co, AL or in one of several places her children moved to in the 1840's (Fannin Co, TX, Saline Co, AR, Floyd Co, GA, etc.).

David and Mary had several children per the various census records. I believe I have correctly identified all of their sons based on strong circumstantial evidence. Of the daughters, I only have one so far, and she is also based on circumstantial evidence.

Unknown Son (1784/86). David Henslee had an apparent son this age. He was home with him in 1786 (age "under 21", born ca 1766/86) and probably home in 1790 (census lost) and still home in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), and still home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94).

I feel fairly sure that this is John P. Henslee (c1785) for several reasons. First of all is he is a perfect match age-wise. Secondly, he married in Rockingham County in 1813 (when David was the only Henslee there old enough to be his father). See his own page for additional information.

I feel fairly sure that this is Enoch Henslee (c1786) for several reasons. First of all is he is a perfect match age-wise. Secondly, he married in Rockingham County in 1806 (when David was the only Henslee there old enough to be his father). Enoch named a son "David" and one "Mackfield", thus proving he is somehow connected to this family. See his own page for additional information.

Cindy Stamps and Lanis Davis have found a Martha Snead Henslee who married Joseph Pruitt on 14 Mar 1814 in Franklin Co, GA. They feel (and I agree) that Martha must be a part of this family. David is the most likely father for her, though if not him, she is certainly closely related.

Crandall Storey shared data with me regarding a possible daughter of David Henslee: Mary Henslee, born 1 Dec 1794 who married James Suitor on 13 May 1813 in Rockingham Co, NC. Mary fits perfectly, but I have not been able to confirm any of the information on her yet, though it is probably all correct.
