Joseph B. Hensley (c1810) and Rachel Gallion and Lucinda --- of Roane Co, TN and Hardin Co, IL and Dallas Co, MO

Joseph B. Hensley was born ca 1810/11 (per 1850 census) or ca 1809/10 (per 1860 census). If he was born in the middle of the year 1810 that would help reconcile his various census entries. He was born in Tennessee, and I think probably in Hawkins County, but that is unproven.

I strongly suspect that Joseph is a son of Robert Hensley (1760), but can't prove that, but it seems like Joseph is a brother to Benjamin Hensley (c1797), and he is a son of Robert.

Joseph would probably have been home with parents in 1810 and 1820, but those census records are lost.

In 1830, Joseph would have been 20 years old. Robert Hensley had no apparent sons with him that year, but Benjamin Hensley (c1797) did have a male age 20-29 (c1800/10) with him in 1830 in Roane Co, TN. I strongly suspect this was Joseph.

On 23 Sep 1830 "Joseph B. Hensley" married Rachel Gallion in Roane Co, TN. Rachel was born ca 1810/20 (per 1840 census). I don't know who her parents were. It is possible that she was a sister of Mary Gallion (c1797) wife of Benjamin Hensley (c1797). This is just a guess though. This is speculation based on the possibility of brothers Benjamin and Joseph marrying sisters, which was a common occurrence.

Joseph Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Roane County. He was not near any other Hensleys. His neighbors were John Riggs and Samuel Pearcy. A "John Gallyon" was a few houses away, possibly a brother to Rachel.

The family left Tennessee for Hardin County, Illinois in the 1840's, probably arriving before ca 1849. They were listed there on the 1850 census. Just ten houses away was a young "Joseph Hensly" age 18 (ca 1831/32) also born Tennessee. I suspect this could be his nephew or possibly the same person as son "Jasper" who was just copied wrong.

By 1860 the family had moved west to Dallas County, Missouri. He was listed there next door to several married sons (William, Newton and Jasper). This census gave Joseph's birth place as Virginia.

Children

Joseph and Rachel had at least four children before her death. Joseph and Lucinda seemed to only have one child together.

Jasper Hensley was born ca 1831/32 in Roane Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

He probably went to Hardin Co, IL with his parents, though he was not listed with him in 1850.

There was a "Joseph" Hensley the right age, and the right birth place just 10 houses away from Joseph in 1850. Since Jasper wasn't found anywhere else in 1850, I suspect this younger Joseph could be the same person as Jasper, but could be wrong. If so, then he married Mary Ann --- before 1850. Mary Ann was born ca 1828/29 in Alabama. I don't know her maiden name. If this family in 1850 is not actually Jasper, then I don't know who it is, but most likely related to old Joseph.

Jasper went to Dallas Co, Missouri with his father and siblings. Assuming Mary Ann was his wife, she must have died in the 1850-60 timeframe for on the 1860 census he apparently had a new wife (also named "Mary"). Mary H. --- was born ca 1840/41 in Tennessee. It is possible this Mary (of 1860) was the same one from 1850, but the ages and birthplaces differ greatly. They were next door to several of Jasper's siblings, and just two houses from father Joseph.

Unknown Daughter (1830/35). Joseph B. Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was not home with him in 1850, so possibly married or dead by then.

Wes Garvin has told me that this daughter was Sarah Anne Hensley born 1833 in Roane Co, TN. I have no additional data on her as of yet.

William Hensley was born ca 1836/37 in Roane Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40).

He probably went to Hardin Co, IL with his parents, though he was not listed with them in 1850, nor did I find him listed elsewhere that year.

By 1860 he was in Dallas Co, MO (just like his father and siblings). He married Nancy --- before 1860, presumably in Dallas Co, MO. She was born ca 1841/42 in Missouri. I don't know her maiden name, but it could be "Martin", since several Martins were with them in 1860.

Newton Hensley was born ca 1839/40 in Roane Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40). He was also with them in 1850 ("Newton" age 10).

Newton Hensley married Martha --- in the 1850-60 timeframe, presumably in Dallas Co, MO. She was born ca 1841/42 in Missouri. I don't know her maiden name.

They were on the 1860 census in Dallas Co, MO next to siblings and near parents.

Joseph Hensley was born ca 1848/49 in Hardin Co, IL. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Joseph" age 1), and with them in 1860 ("Joseph" age 11).
