Randal Hensley (1807) and Lementine Johnson of NC, TN and GA

The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Randal Hensley as far as can be determined. He did live in the same county (Monroe Co, TN) as my ancestor Samuel Hensley (1801-1852).

Randal Hensley was born 17 Jun 1807 per Family Bible. He was born in North Carolina, most likely in Burke County in the Toms Creek area (present McDowell County, NC.)

I feel quite sure that Randal Hensley is a son of Benjamin Hensley (c1776) and Elizabeth ---. I have seen no direct proof of this, but the evidence seems strong. First of all, Benjamin had a proven son named Ralzamore M. Hensley. And Ralzamore named one of his kids "Randal". The older Randal (1807) named one of his sons "Ralzamore M. Hensley". They all lived in the same areas at the same time, and Benjamin did have an apparent son Randal's age per the early census records. Randall named his two oldest children Elizabeth and Benjamin, presumably after his parents. All this evidence is circumstantial, but it is highly compelling.

For the 1810 census, Randal would have been about 3 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). Benjamin Hensley had 2 apparent sons in that age group with him in Burke Co, NC that year.

For the 1820 census, Randal would have been about 13 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1804/10). Benjamin Hensley had an apparent son in that age group with him in Burke Co, NC that year.

In the 1820's, Benjamin moved his family to Monroe County, Tennessee, and Randal also went there at that time.

Randal Hensley married Lementine Johnson ca 1829 in Monroe Co, TN. Lementine (also listed as "Clementine" on several records) was born 11 Aug 1815 (per Family Bible) in Tennessee (per 1850 census) or South Carolina (per 1860 census) or Virginia (per 1880 census). I don't know which of these is correct! I don't know who her parents were. I don't know the proof of her maiden name either, for it wasn't given in the family bible.

This may be a big coincidence, but my own Hensley ancestors were Samuel Hensley (1801) and wife Nancy Johnson who were also in Monroe Co, TN at that time, though not near these other Hensleys. I don't personally think they are closely related. In 1830 Randal's father Benjamin was just two houses from William Johnson (1760/70) who was old enough to be Clementine's father, but of course, I don't know if he was her father. There were numerous Johnsons in Monroe County at that time.

Randal Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in Monroe County, Tennessee next door to a Benjamin Hensley (1800/10), who could easily be a brother, or a cousin. I had tentatively identified that Benjamin as Benjamin Hensley (c1805) later of Bradley Co, TN, but could be wrong about that. If it is that Benjamin, then I can't imagine how he and Randal are related, though probably cousins of some sort.  Randal's father Benjamin was also in Monroe County in 1830, but not listed close by.

In the 1830's, Randal moved his family across the mountains into neighboring Cherokee County, North Carolina. I'm not sure where he lived exactly, but possibly on the Georgia border, for his children born in the 1830's were born in both NC and GA. It is also possible that he moved back and forth during those years.

Randal Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Cherokee County, North Carolina. No other Hensleys were in the county. Neighbors were Parmer Loudermilk and Stephen Graves. I haven't been able to determine where they were exactly yet. At this same time, his father was living in neighboring Union County, Georgia, so they may have been quite close together, just on different sides of the state line.

In the 1840's, they moved to another Cherokee County, this one in Georgia. This was just two counties south of where his parents were living at the time in Union County, Georgia.

They were listed on the 1850 census in Cherokee County, Georgia, the only Hensleys in that county that year.

Sometime prior to 1870 they moved to Etowah County, Alabama.  I don't know what drew them there. They were the only Hensleys there as of the 1870 census.

I was unable to find Randal or Lementine on the 1900 census, so I suppose they both died between 1880 and 1900, probably in Etowah Co., AL.
