Hobson / Hopson Genealogy - North Carolina
Welcome to my Hobson genealogy pages. I am interested in the Hobson surname in North Carolina, specifically the Duplin and Wayne County area of eastern North Carolina
Hobson and Hopson are the main forms of this surname, but it can be misspelled a surprising number of ways.
Neither Hobson or Hopson made the list of the top 1000 most common surnames in the United States in 2000 or 2010.
My most recent Hobson ancestor is my 4 times great grandmother Rebecca Hobson (c1808-1862) who was born and died in Wayne Co., NC. She married Richard Roberts ca 1824. She is a child of:
Henry Hobson (bef 1765-c1813) was a School Teacher. He was born in England, and came to North Carolina at some point before 1801 when he married Fairlise (or Phereby) Braddy in Duplin Co., NC. They lived in Duplin and Wayne Counties. Henry was already in his 30s when he married Phereby, so it’s possible he had been married before her and already had children.
I don’t know who Henry’s parents are, but there were a few other Hobsons in the area at the same time who may be his sons, brothers or nephews or somehow related to him, including a Daniel Hobson (d aft 1841), Jesse Hobson (d aft 1810) and Richard Hobson (d aft 1822).
I get the impression that Henry Hobson is not closely related to the rather large family of Hobsons found in the Quaker records in the Piedmont section of the state, nor the large line out of Virginia, though it’s possible he’s distantly connected.
More research is needed to determine where Henry came from, other than simply “England.”
