Holeman Genealogy - Virginia

Welcome to my Holeman genealogy pages. I am interested in the Holeman surname in Frederick and Shenandoah Co., VA and, to a lesser extent, western NC.

The Holeman surname is generally of English or Dutch origin.

The name can also be spelled Holman (most common), Hollman, Holiman, Holdman, etc.

Holeman, nor any of the variations, made the list of 1000 most common surnames in the US in 2000 or 2010.

My most recent Holeman ancestor was my 6 times great grandmother Rebecca Holeman. She was born in the 1750s in Frederick (now Shenandoah) Co., VA where she grew up. She married William Cathey there ca 1772. He was from North Carolina where they moved after marriage, but soon returned to Virginia for a number of years, then back to North Carolina where he died in 1812. She died in the 1830s in Macon Co., NC. Rebecca is a proven daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Cartley) Holeman.

Daniel Holeman (c1695-c1770) was in the Shenandoah Co., VA region quite early, marrying there in 1737 when it was still part of Orange County. His wife, Elizabeth Cartley (bef 1721-aft 1791) is sometimes mistakenly assumed to be a Cathey, but while similar, Cartley isn’t a variation of that surname. I don’t have proof for his parents, but other researcher show him as a son of:

Thomas Holeman (d 1723) and Nancy Moreland (d 1729). I have no documentation on them currently.
