I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to John Jenkins, but I'm sure he is somehow closely related to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803).
John Jenkins was born ca 1770/75 (per census analysis), presumably in Onslow County, North Carolina. I base his approximate birth date on his 1800, 1820 and 1830 census entries. His 1810 entry gives his age as 45+, which puts him born before 1765, which does not match the other three census entries, so probably in error. In 1820 he was 45+ or born before 1775, and in 1830 he was 50-59, or born ca 1770/80. These two entries combine to an approximate birth of ca 1770/75. In 1800 he was 16-25, born ca 1774/84, so if this one is accurate, he may have been born ca 1774/75.
I haven't yet been able to identify John's parents, but he may be a son of Daniel Jenkins (1755/70) for Daniel's 1804 Will mentioned a son named "John", but I don't know for sure if it was this John. In fact, I'm not sure if Daniel is old enough to be the father of this John, but he should still be considered a suspect. Henry Jenkins (bef 1748) may be a better suspect, for John was next door to him in 1800, and Henry did have apparent sons John's age (per 1786 census).
John Jenkins would have been about 15 to 20 years old by the time of the 1790 census, so he could be enumerated in the "under 16" age group (born 1774/90) or in the 16+ age group (born before 1774). None of the four Jenkins listed had an "extra" male aged 16 and up, but two of them had one or more apparent sons under 16, including: Joshua Jenkins and Lewis Jenkins Jr. Back tracking to the 1786 state census, there were several Jenkins listed with sons "under 21" (born 1766/87) including: Henry Jenkins, Joshua Jenkins, Lewis Jenkins, and William Jenkins. Any of these could be John's parents.
John Jenkins married someone before ca 1794, presumably in Onslow County. I have not found his wife's name, but census analysis shows she was born ca 1755/65.
On 26 Apr 1798 John Jenkins and William Redd witnessed a deed between Jesse Clegg and Jesse Hardison. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book U page 32, from Records of Onslow County, North Carolina, Vol I by Zae Harget Gwynn, and all subsequent deeds cited on this page are from this book or Vol II, except for those in Deed Books 23 and later which I abstracted myself from the original Deed Books).
On 12 Apr 1800 John Jenkins and Robert Williams witnessed a deed between John Yopp to George McClellan. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book V page 8).
For the 1800 census, John Jenkins was listed next door to Henry Jenkins (bef 1748) and also next to Charles Hardison.

Mrs. Jenkins apparently died before 1820, for on that census John's wife appears to be younger. That means he married again in that same period to another woman. I have not yet found her name either. She was born ca 1780/90.
John Jenkins was listed on the 1820 census in Onslow. He was next door to Edward (or Edmund) W. Fonville and Isaac Lissey. No Jenkins were listed nearby.

John Jenkins was listed on the 1830 census in Onslow Co, NC. He was next door to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803) and near several other Jenkins. He was also next door to Elijah Justice.

The 1830 census is the last record I have for John. He was not listed in Onslow on the 1840 census. He may have died in the 1830's, or moved away. I did not find any estate records or Wills for him.
John Jenkins and his two wives seemed to have only three children per the early census records. None are positively identified.
I did not find any likely matches for this person on the 1840 and 1850 census in Onslow County.
I did not find any marriage records in that time period that could be this Miss Jenkins.
George H. Jenkins (c1803) is a good match age-wise, Osborne Jenkins (c1803) is also a good match age-wise. They are the only two likely suspects I could find. I've always suspected that Osborne was a son of Lewis, so if I'm correct in that, then George is the more likely son of John. However much more evidence is needed before concluding which one of these (if either of them) is a son of John Jenkins.
