I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Lewis Jenkins, but I'm sure he is somehow closely related to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803).

Lewis Jenkins was born ca 1710 or before. I base this on a few things. His first known public record in Onslow County was dated 1744, so he was probably at least 21 then, so born ca 1723 or earlier. However, he is the proven father of Henry Jenkins who was born ca 1732 or before, so based on Lewis being roughly 21 or so when Henry was born, I estimate that Lewis was born ca 1710 or thereabouts, perhaps earlier than that, but not too much later than that.

I don't know where Lewis Jenkins was born, it does not seem likely he was born in what is now Onslow County, for I don't think there were any (or many) white settlers there at that point in time. I have seen where other researchers have tied this Lewis into another Jenkins family in north eastern North Carolina and south eastern Virginia. That may be true, but I have not done my own research on the subject, so I'll just mention it as a possibility, pending more information.

I don't know who Lewis' parents were, but I strongly suspect he is a brother to Thomas Jenkins (c1715) and probably closely related to the other Onslow County Jenkins patriarchs of: George Jenkins (c1734) and William Jenkins (c1732).

Lewis Jenkins married Isabella --- before ca 1732. This marriage may have taken place in Onslow County (still part of New Hanover Precinct) or perhaps they married in their former place of residence before moving to Onslow County. I don't know Isabella's maiden name, but I've seen it listed as "Averitt", but have seen no proof to go with that, so I don't know if it is correct or not. "Averitt" was a family that coexisted with, and was associated with the Jenkins over the next 150 years, so it is certainly possible that Averitt was Isabella's maiden name. However, the Averitts were not the only family with a long association with the Jenkins. Others included the Starkey and the Rhodes families, among others.

On 5 Oct 1742, Lewis Jenkins came into Onslow County Court and "proves rights for 7 white persons and 4 black ones belonging to his family". I don't know what this means, but it does seem to indicate that the family had just arrived in the County. (Onslow County Court Minutes 1732-1743 Vol 1 by Onslow County 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee)

Lewis Jenkins was mentioned several times in the early Onslow County Court Minutes. I have not copied all these records yet.

On 3 Jan 1744, Lewis Jenkins and Severus Goold witnessed a deed from Hope Dexter to James Thomson. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 15, from Records of Onslow County, North Carolina, Vol I by Zae Harget Gwynn, and all subsequent deeds cited on this page are from this book or Vol II).

On 10 Aug 1744, Lewis Jenkins was deed 121 acres by Daniel Mashburn, attorney for brother Matthew Mashburn. The land was on the West side of New River, at Reed's upper corner. Witnesses were Henry Rodes, Edward Rivers and Thomas Rodes. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 18).

On 4 Apr 1745, Lewis Jenkins and John Lay witnessed a deed from Timothy Clancett to Jacob Moor. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 14).

On the same date (4 Apr 1745), Lewis Jenkins and Solomon Jennings witnessed a deed from Abraham Mitchell to Henry Rhodes. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 20).

On 2 Jul 1745, Thomas Jenkins (Lewis's suspected brother) registered the birth dates of all of his children (for some reason), and Lewis Jenkins, Register signed the entry. This is one of only two records showing Thomas and Lewis at the same time. Apparently Lewis Jenkins was a County Register (County Clerk, or Register of Deeds). (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 20).

On 4 Jul 1745, an order was made that the Onslow County Court House be built at "Johnston" on New River Lot 148. The signatories included John Starkey, Samuel Johnston, Samuel James, Lewis Jenkins, Thomas Jenkins and Abra. Mitchell. This is the second and last document found listing both Lewis and Thomas Jenkins together.  (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 20).

On 20 Dec 1749, Lewis Jenkins and Peter Perry witnessed a deed from John Riggs to James Maginnis. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 31).

On 30 Jan 1749/1750, Lewis Jenkins and John Averitt witnessed a deed from Humphrey Harrison to James O'Quirk. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 34).

On 20 Dec 1750, Lewis Jenkins deeded a negro named "Hannah" to his "daughter" Isabella Jenkins, and also to "my sons" Henry Jenkins and Lewis Jenkins. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 51).

On 2 Jul 1751, Lewis Jenkins and John Starkey witnessed a deed from Nathaniel Averitt to his son John Averitt. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 53).

On 3 Apr 1752, Lewis Jenkins and Henry Rodes witnessed a deed from James Albriton to John Christian Heidelberg. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 58).

On 25 Oct 1754 a muster list was taken of Onslow Militia members in John Starkey's company under Captain Thomas Hicks. The list included Lewis Jenkins, George Jenkins (nephew?), Henry Jenkins (son) and William Jenkins (nephew?). It is possible that this was Lewis Jr in the Militia instead of Lewis Sr. I'm not sure what the age requirement was, as "Jr" would have been roughly 19 in 1754.

On 30 Nov 1754 Lewis Jenkins and Henry Jenkins (his son) witnessed a deed from Jeremiah Barns to Philemon Morris. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 36).

On 6 Dec 1754, Lewis Jenkins witnessed a deed from Richard Farr the younger to David Gordon. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 30).

On 12 Dec 1754, Lewis Jenkins and Henry Jenkins (his son) witnessed a deed from Samuel Hall to John Averitt. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 36).

Around 1756, Lewis's son Lewis (Jr) apparently came of age (turned 21), and so Lewis began adding "Sr" to his name to distinguish them while his son added "Jr". Unlike the common usage today, these were not actually part of their names, but merely an added designation to distinguish an elder man from a younger of the same name. It did not imply a father and son relationship (though in this case they were father and son). You will often find a "Sr" and a "Jr" who were not father and son, but Uncle and Nephew, or even cousins, or not related at all.

On 25 Mar 1756 Lewis Jenkins (don't know which one) and Robert Simpson witnessed a deed from Phillemon Morris to Peter Lowe. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 8).

On 10 Jun 1756 Lewis Jenkins Sr gave land to his sons Lewis Jenkins Jr and Henry Jenkins, land on New River. Lewis Jenkins Sr and wife Isabella Jenkins, mother and father of Henry and Lewis reserved their life rights to live on the land for their lifetimes. Witnesses: Robert Simpson, Elizabeth Lee and Sarah Simpson. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 14).

On 29 Jul 1756, John Averitt deeded land to Lewis Jenkins Sr, and stated it was to be Lewis Sr and Isabella's until their deaths, and at that time to go to Lewis Jenkins Jr. The wording of this deed makes you believe that John Averitt is a relative. Witnesses were Francis Throrowgood, Henry Jenkins and John Thorowgood. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 18).

On 10 Sep 1756, Lewis Jenkins Sr deeded land to his daughter Elizabeth King, wife of William King, effective after the death of himself and wife Isabella, father and mother of Elizabeth King. Witnesses were John Thorougood and Henry Jenkins Jr. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 17).

On 23 Sep 1756, Lewis Jenkins Sr and Henry Jenkins (his son) witnessed a deed from Horotio James to Luke Bond. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 20).

On 10 Oct 1757, Lewis Jenkins Sr, Lewis Jenkins Jr (his son) and Henry Jenkins (his son) witnessed a deed from Andrew Fullwood to Thomas Brown. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 36).

On 17 Jul 1758, Adam Brinson deeded land to Henry Jenkins, on the North Side of Southwest Branch of New River, stating that the father and mother of Henry Jenkins: Lewis Jenkins Sr and wife Izabella to live and enjoy the land for their natural lives, but no longer, after that to Henry Jenkins. Witnessed by Avy Lester and John Evans. The wording of this deed makes Adam Brinson seem like a relative. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 42).

On 22 Feb 1759 Izabella Jenkins and Lewis Jenkins Sr witnessed a deed from Thomas Albritton to John Evans. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 58).

On 22 Feb 1760, Lewis Jenkins was elected Onslow County Register. I'm not sure if this was Lewis Sr or Jr. Lewis Sr had held this position earlier. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book F page 1).

On 23 Sep 1760 Lewis Jenkins Sr and Henry Jenkins (his son) witnessed a deed from William Finsinger to Philip Aman. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book F page 12).

Isabella --- Jenkins apparently died sometime between 22 Feb 1759 and 25 Jul 1763, for on that latter date Lewis made his Will and he did not mention her.

On 25 Jul 1763, Lewis Jenkins Sr made his Will in Onslow County, North Carolina. He named his son Lewis Jenkins, his daughter Elizabeth King, and son Henry Jenkins. He also named Henry as his Executor. Witnesses were Amy Hunter, George Brinson and John Brinson. (Onslow Co, NC Will Book 2 page 89).

I did not see a probate date for the above Will, nor did I find a Loose Estate record for Lewis. His son Lewis "Jr" used "Jr" on a deed dated 12 Mar 1765, but dropped it by 21 Oct 1765, so perhaps Lewis Sr had died by that latter date.

Children

Lewis Jenkins and wife Isabella --- had four proven children as named in various deeds and his Will.

Henry Jenkins (c1732)

Elizabeth Jenkins (c1733)

Lewis Jenkins (Jr) (c1735)

Isabella Jenkins (c1737)

Henry Jenkins was born ca 1732 or thereabouts. He is a proven son of Lewis Jenkins Sr and Isabella as named in Lewis' Will and also several deeds. Henry remained in Onslow County at least through ca 1800 after which he died there, or moved away.

See his own page for additional information.

Elizabeth Jenkins was born ca 1732 or thereabouts. She is a proven daughter of Lewis Jenkins Sr and Isabella as named in a 1756 deed from her parents to her, apparently just after she married. She is also named in Lewis Jenkins' Will of 1763.

On 7 Nov 1753, Elizabeth Jenkins and Lewis Jenkins (her father) and Philemon Morris witnessed a deed from Andrew Fullwood to James Taylor. It was uncommon for a woman to witness a deed, but it happened often enough. This probably signifies that she was 21 years old at least by then, thus I calculate her birth date to be ca 1732 or before.  (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 23)

On 8 Mar 1754, Elizabeth Jenkins and Lewis Jenkins (her father) and John Averitt witnessed a deed from Solomon Warren to Nathaniel Averitt. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 20)

On 10 Sep 1756, Lewis Jenkins Sr deeded property to his daughter "Elizabeth King, wife of William King", reserving a life right for himself and wife Isabella Jenkins. This deed proves that Elizabeth was Lewis and Isabella's daughter, and that she married William King by this time. The deed was witnessed by John Thorougood and Henry Jenkins Jr. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 17)

The above deed shows that Elizabeth Jenkins married William King between 8 Mar 1754 and 10 Sep 1756.

I have no additional data on William and Elizabeth after their marriage. I have not attempted to trace them.

"Elizabeth King" was named in the 1763 Will of her father, so she was still living at that time.

Lewis Jenkins (Jr) was born ca 1735 or thereabouts. He is a proven son of Lewis Jenkins Sr and Isabella as named in Lewis' Will and also several deeds. Lewis remained in Onslow County until his death ca 1809.

See his own page for additional information.

Isabella Jenkins was born ca 1737 (rough guess). She is a proven daughter of Lewis Jenkins Sr and Isabella as named in a 1750 deed from her parents to her.

On 20 Dec 1750, Lewis Jenkins deeded a Negro "Hannah" to "daughter" Isabella Jenkins, and also to sons Henry and Lewis Jenkins Jr. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 51)

Unfortunately, the above deed is the only record I have for Isabella. There is no way to calculate her approximate birth date from this one record, for there is no minimum age for receiving property via deed (only for making a deed), so she could have been 1 month old, or 21 years old, or 50 years old. I'm putting her birth at ca "1737" just arbitrarily to have her in line with her known siblings.

Isabella was not named in her father's 1763 Will, so she may have been dead by then.
