I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Thomas Jenkins, but I'm sure he is somehow closely related to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803).

Thomas Jenkins was born ca 1716 or before. I base this on a few things. His first known public record in Onslow County was dated 1737, so he was probably at least 21 then, so born ca 1716 or earlier. His oldest child was born in 1735, so that works with his ca 1716 birth date, making him about 19 when the first child was born. Of course he could have been born well before 1716, but probably not after that.

I don't know where Thomas Jenkins was born, it does not seem likely he was born in what is now Onslow County, for I don't think there were any (or many) white settlers there at that point in time. I have seen where other researchers have tied this Thomas into another Jenkins family in north eastern North Carolina and south eastern Virginia. That may be true, but I have not done my own research on the subject, so I'll just mention it as a possibility, pending more information.

I don't know who Thomas's parents were, but I strongly suspect he is a brother to Lewis Jenkins (c1710) and probably closely related to the other Onslow County Jenkins patriarchs of: George Jenkins (c1734) and William Jenkins (c1732).

Thomas Jenkins married Margaret --- before ca 1735. This marriage may have taken place in Onslow County (still part of New Hanover Precinct) or perhaps they married in their former place of residence before moving to Onslow County. I don't know Margaret's maiden name. The only record I've found with her name on it (so far) is in the 1775 estate records for Thomas Jenkins, so that leaves plenty of room for her to have been his second wife, though I don't know if that is the case or not.

Thomas and family were in Onslow County by 1737, probably earlier. They lived somewhere along the New River, probably not far from his probable brother Lewis Jenkins.

On 4 Oct 1737, Thomas Jenkins filed a Petition for Thomas Evans (aged 10 years old "last May 13"), orphan of William Evans, deceased. Samuel James was Security. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book A page 11, from Records of Onslow County, North Carolina, Vol I by Zae Harget Gwynn, and all subsequent deeds cited on this page are from this book or Vol II, except for those in Deed Books 23 and later which I abstracted myself from the original Deed Books).

In July 1741, Thomas Jenkins was listed as a juror. (Onslow County Court Minutes 1732-1743 Vol 1 by Onslow County 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee)

On 6 Oct 1742 Thomas Jenkins and Henry Skibbow witnessed a deed from John Williams to Thomas Crawford. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book A page 38).

On 13 Dec 1742, Thomas Jenkins, Archibald Huston and Joseph Sturgis witnessed a deed from John Wallace and wife Elizabeth to James Glenn. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book A page 39).

On the same date (13 Dec 1742), Thomas Jenkins, James Glenn and Joseph Sturgis witnessed a deed from Archibald Huston to John Wallice and wife Elizabeth. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book A page 39).

On 4 Jan 1743, Thomas Jenkins and Joseph Sturgis proved the deed from John Wallis and wife Elizabeth to Archibald Houston. (Onslow County Court Minutes 1732-1743 Vol 1 by Onslow County 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee)

Thomas Jenkins was mentioned often in the early Onslow County Court Minutes. I have not copied all these records yet.

On 4 Jul 1745, it was ordered that a Court House be built at "Johnston" on New River, Lot 148. Signatories included John Starkey, Samuel Johnston, Samuel James, Lewis Jenkins, Thomas Jenkins and Abra. Mitchell. This was the first record I've found listing both Thomas and Lewis Jenkins together. I believe they were both county officials of some sort.  (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 20).

On 2 Jul 1745 (this date must be wrong), Thomas Jenkins "records birth dates of his children". He gave the names and birth dates of seven children. I don't know why he did this, but it is certainly a valuable genealogical tool. He may have just been putting it on the public records the way other officials wrote poems and so forth in the margins or between deeds and such. Normally births were recorded in the Parish Records, and not the County Deed Books, but regardless, here is what he recorded, and note that his brother Lewis Jenkins, Registrar, signed it, certifying it, so to speak:

Charity Jenkins, Jul 23, 1735
Agness Jenkins, Oct 20, 1737
Rebecca Jenkins, Aug 6, 1739
Jonathan Jenkins, Mar 6, 1741
son Rees Jenkins, Mar 19, 1743
Margaret Jenkins, Mar 2, 1745
Rey Jenkins, Aug 22, 1745* (This date is after the date of the deed).
Signed: Lewis Jenkins, Registrar. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 21).

On 25 Jun 1745, Thomas Jenkins and Joseph Sturgis witnessed a deed from James Wright to John Andrew. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book B page 23).

In July 1747, "Johnston" was given a permit to build a grist mill with Thomas Jenkins, David Jones, and Stephen Williams as Inspectors. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 25).

In July 1752, Thomas Jenkins and William Loyde witnessed a deed from Anthony Moor to Joseph Loyde. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 2).

On 7 Aug 1752, Thomas Jenkins and --- Johnston witnessed a deed from William Loyd to Thomas Hicks. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 6).

On 20 Jul 1753, Thomas Jenkins and William Sloan witnessed a deed from Archibald Huston to Richard Wallace. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book C page 19).

On 2 Apr 1754, Thomas Jenkins and John Spooner witnessed a deed from William Williams Sr to John Shackleford. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 19).

On 7 Dec 1754, Thomas Jenkins deeded 200 acres to Amos Williams. The land was on the North East side of the Northwest Branch of New River. Witnesses were John Johnston, David Sloan, and Jesse Williams. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 38).

On 26 Dec 1754, Thomas Jenkins and Charity Jenkins (his daughter) witnessed a deed from Thomas Ganey to Michel Williams. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 44).

On 17 Feb 1757, Thomas Jenkins and Rebecca Jenkins (his daughter) witnessed a deed from Benjamin Hicks to Mickel Williams. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 31).

On 8 Jul 1758, Thomas Jenkins and Jonathan Jenkins (his son) witnessed a deed from Thomas Albritton to John Simpson. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 45).

On 23 Mar 1759 Thomas Gainey of Craven Co, SC sold 300 acres to Thomas Jenkins of Onslow. The land was in Onslow on South side of Southwest branch of New River. Witnesses were Nathan Gainey, Walter Owens and Thomas Lucas. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 53).

On  14 Jan 1761, Thomas Jenkins and Rebecca Jenkins (his daughter) witnessed a deed from Willis Whitehead to John Phillips. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book F page 18).

On 4 Feb 1765, Thomas Jenkins and Thomas Pitt witnessed a deed from Michael Williams to Isaac Jarrot. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book H page 3).

On 28 Mar 1767, Thomas Jenkins and Rees Jenkins (his son) witnessed a deed from Joshua Johnston to Mickel Williams. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book H page 47).

Thomas Jenkins was listed on the 1769 Tax list for Onslow County.

Thomas Jenkins died ca 1775 in Onslow County, for that is the date on his estate file. (Onslow County Loose Estates, Thomas Jenkins - 1775, North Carolina Archives)

On 9 Oct 1775, a division of Thomas's Estate was made to Mrs. Margaret Jenkins and her son Jonathan Jenkins. They were the only two named, so was everyone else dead by then? Or just not named in this particular record for some reason? (Onslow County Loose Estates, Thomas Jenkins - 1775, North Carolina Archives)

I did not find any additional records for Margaret, Thomas's widow.

Children

Thomas Jenkins and wife Margaret --- had seven proven children as named in the 1745 deed registering their names. It is quite possible other children were born after 1745.

Charity Jenkins (1735)

Agness Jenkins (1737)

Rebecca Jenkins (1739)

Jonathan Jenkins (1742)

Rees Jenkins (1743)

Margaret Jenkins (1745)

Rey Jenkins (1745)

Charity Jenkins was born 23 Jul 1735 (per 1745 Registry of Thomas Jenkins's children), presumably in Onslow County, North Carolina.

On 26 Dec 1754, Thomas Jenkins (her father) and Charity Jenkins witnessed a deed from Thomas Ganey to Michel Williams. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book D page 44).

The record above is the last record I have for Charity. I don't know whom (or if) she married.

Agness Jenkins was born 20 Oct 1737 (per 1745 Registry of Thomas Jenkins's children), in Onslow County, North Carolina.

The record above is the only record I have for Agness Jenkins. I don't know whom (or if) she married.

Rebecca Jenkins was born 6 Aug 1739 (per 1745 Registry of Thomas Jenkins's children), in Onslow County, North Carolina.

On 17 Feb 1757, Thomas Jenkins (her father) and Rebecca Jenkins witnessed a deed from Benjamin Hicks to Mickel Williams. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book E page 31).

On  14 Jan 1761, Thomas Jenkins (her father) and Rebecca Jenkins witnessed a deed from Willis Whitehead to John Phillips. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book F page 18).

The record above is the last record I have for Rebecca. I don't know whom (or if) she married.

Jonathan Jenkins was born 6 Mar 1741 (per 1745 Registry of Thomas Jenkins's children), in Onslow County, North Carolina. His birth year of "1741" would actually be 1742 by our modern calendar, for back then, the new year did not begin until April 1st, so that means his birth date should be designated 6 Mar 1741/1742.

See his own page for additional information.

Rees Jenkins was born 19 Mar 1743 (per 1745 Registry of Thomas Jenkins's children), in Onslow County, North Carolina. His birth year of "1743" would actually be 1744 by our modern calendar, for back then, the new year did not begin until April 1st, so that means his birth date should be designated 19 Mar 1743/1744.

On 28 Mar 1767, Thomas Jenkins (his father) and Rees Jenkins witnessed a deed from Joshua Johnston to Mickel Williams. (Onslow Co, NC Deed Book H page 47).

The above record is the last I have for Rees Jenkins.

Margaret Jenkins was born 2 Mar 1745 (per 1745 Registry of Thomas Jenkins's children), in Onslow County, North Carolina. Her birth dated should be designated 2 Mar 1745/46, except that would be after the record was made (unless the recording date is wrong). Her birth date does not mesh with her brother Rey born 22 Aug 1745. One of these two must be in error, for there is less than 9 months between them.

The record above is the only record I have for Margaret Jenkins. I don't know whom (or if) she married.

Rey Jenkins was born 22 Aug 1745 (per 1745 Registry of Thomas Jenkins's children), in Onslow County, North Carolina. His birth date is after the date the record was recorded (on 2 Jul 1745), so something isn't right here.

The record above is the only record I have for Rey Jenkins. I don't know whom (or if) she married.
