[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Nancy Jenkins, but I'm sure she (or her husband) is somehow closely related to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803).
I'm not sure if Nancy was born a Jenkins and became a single mother, or if she married a Jenkins who died before 1830. I suspect she was a single mother for she seem to have new children born after 1830.
Nancy Jenkins was born ca 1790-1800 (per 1840 census) or ca 1800-10 (per 1830 census). These can be reconciled if she was born ca 1800. She was presumably born in Onslow County.
I don't know who her parents were, nor am I totally sure if she was a Jenkins by birth or had married a Mr. Jenkins.
For the 1810 census she would have been somewhere between 10-20 years of age, so she could be enumerated in the 10-15 age category (born ca 1794/1800) or in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94), or even possibly in the "under 10 age group (born ca 1800/10). This wide range makes census analysis difficult. However, there were only four Jenkins' households in 1810 Onslow, and only James Jenkins (c1780) had daughters "under 10", but he is not her father (he left a Will naming his children). John Jenkins (1770/74) and Lewis Jenkins (1770/74) both had daughters aged 10-15, and no one had any apparent daughters age 16-25.
For the 1820 census, Nancy Jenkins would have been something like 20 to 30 years old, so she could be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804) or in the 26-44 age group (born ca 1775/94). There were only six Jenkins' households in Onslow that year and none of them had an apparent daughter aged 16-25. James Jenkins (c1780) had one female age 26-44, but that was his wife Nancy (a different Nancy from the one under study here); Thomas Jenkins (c1786) had an apparent wife age 26-44. John Jenkins (c1770/74) had an apparent wife that age, and David Jenkins (1775/94) had two females age 26-44 with him.
I would eliminate James Jenkins from consideration, leaving the others. Thomas Jenkins was still alive in 1850, though he had remarried in 1844. He probably wasn't Nancy's husband, unless they divorced or something. John Jenkins could have been married to Nancy, though I don't know that for sure. David Jenkins household had room for Nancy, so she could have been his wife, or perhaps his sister.
Nancy's first children were born ca 1820-25, so she must have married in that same time-frame if she was married at all. I found no marriage records that could be for her.
Nancy was listed as head of household on the 1830 census, so if she had ever been married, her husband had died before then. She was not listed near any other Jenkins. She was listed between Eli Coston and John M. Morgan.
1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1830 Onslow County, NC pg 230 Nancy Jenkins 1100000000000-0100100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Son? (1820/25) --> gone by 1840 or (1810/20) 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Son? (1825/30) 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Nancy JENKINS (c1800) d/o ? 1 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Daughter? (1820/25) --> gone by 1840
Nancy was still in Onslow for the 1840 census. She was not listed near any other Jenkins. She had several new children born since the 1830 census, so this leads me to believe she was a single mother. However it is possible these were not her children at all, but for now I'm assuming they were. She was listed between the households of Daniel McDaniel and Euthamy Canady.

I did not find Nancy on the 1850 census, so she may have died or moved away in the 1840's, or possibly she married someone. I did not find any marriage records though.
Nancy Jenkins had at least six children per the 1830 and 1840 census records. None of these have been identified yet.
Unknown Son (1820/25). Nancy Jenkins had an apparent son this age. He was home with her in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and probably still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20). For these two to be reconciled, he must have been born ca 1820.
I have found no likely suspects for who this could be.
Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Nancy Jenkins had an apparent daughter this age. She was home with her in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.
I have found no likely suspects for who this could be.
Unknown Son (1825/30). Nancy Jenkins had an apparent son this age. He was home with her in 1830 (age "under 5" born ca 1825/30) and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).
This could be Benjamin Jenkins (c1828) who is the only unidentified Jenkins around who fits age-wise. Other than his age being compatible, I have no other data connecting him to Nancy.
Unknown Daughter (1830/35). Nancy Jenkins had an apparent daughter this age. She was home with her in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).
I have found no likely suspects for who this could be.
Unknown Daughter (1830/35). Nancy Jenkins had an apparent daughter this age. She was home with her in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).
I have found no likely suspects for who this could be.
Unknown Daughter (1835/40). Nancy Jenkins had an apparent daughter this age. She was home with her in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40).
I have found no likely suspects for who this could be.
