Martin Genealogy - Marion Co., SC
Welcome to my Martin genealogy pages. I am interested in the Martin surname in Marion Co., SC and that general area.
Martin was the 17th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped slightly to 20th.
My most recent Martin ancestor is my maternal 4 times Great Grandmother Dorothy Martin. She was born ca 1765/1770, birth place unknown. She married Reuben Turner ca 1780s. They resided in the part of Georgetown Dist., SC that became Marion Dist., SC in 1800. Dorothy died in the 1830s in Marion Dist., SC, probably in the section that is now Dillon Co., SC (formed 1910), but near the Marion County line, somewhere in the Catfish Baptist Church vicinity.
I don’t know who Dorothy’s parents were. She has two very likely siblings: Catherine Martin (1765/74-1810s) who married William Turner (brother of Reuben), and John Martin (1770/75-aft 1835) who married Penelope Turner sister of Reuben and William.
There were other Martin families in Marion Dist., SC in the 1700s and 1800s who are mostly well documented. I don’t believe my Martins are related to them, but I could be wrong. Coincidentally, I am related to many of those Martins via intermarriages into other branches of my family.
