Welcome to my Minshew genealogy pages. I am interested in the Minshew surname in eastern North Carolina, primarily in Greene, Wayne and Duplin Counties.

Minshew can be spelled a variety of ways. In my own area of interest it appears mainly as Minshew, Minchew, Mishoe, Mishow and Mincey. There are other variations as well such as Minshaw, Minchey, etc.

Minshew, nor any of its variant spellings, were on the Top 1000 surname lists in the United States in 2000 or 2010.

My most recent Minshew ancestor is my 4 times Great Grandmother, Mary Minshew (c1800/10-aft 1830). She was born in either Wayne or Greene Co., NC. She had a child out of wedlock with Barnabas Edwards (c1806-1872), which he acknowledged in court and paid child support for, but he and Mary didn’t marry. However, since the child was acknowledged by his father, he was legally allowed to use his father’s surname. That is my ancestor William Edwards (c1826-c1897). Mary Minshew married John Ayres c1828 in Wayne Co., NC.

I do not know who Mary’s parents were. There are several potential candidates in Greene Co., NC and Wayne Co., NC, none of which I can currently prove are hers.
