Welcome to my Murphy genealogy pages. I am interested in the Murphy surname in Surry Co., NC and nearby. That area of interest may expand once I’ve learned more about my Murphy ancestry. As of now I know very little.

Murphy was the 58^th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 64^th.

My most recent Murphy ancestor is my 4 times Great Grandmother Mary Murphy (c1771-1850s). She was born in Surry Co., NC where she married Aaron Wright in 1792. They moved to Lincoln Co., KY with many of her kin in the 1790s. However, she and Aaron returned to Surry Co., NC soon after and remained there until his death in the 1820s. She moved with some of her children to Union Co., GA in the 1840s. She is a proven child of Richard and Keziah (Terry) Murphy.

Richard Murphy (c1730-aft 1812) resided in Pittsylvania Co., VA in the 1760s where he married Keziah Terry ca 1762. By 1771 they were in Surry Co., NC. They moved to Lincoln Co., KY in the late 1790s and remained there. His parents are not yet known.
