Welcome to my Nixon genealogy pages. I am interested in the Nixon surname in North Carolina, specifically the Wayne County area of eastern North Carolina

Nixon and Nickson are the main spellings of this surname, but Nixon is the most common form of the name.

Nixon was the 877th most common surname in the United States as of the 2000 census. It dropped to 907th by 2010. “Nickson” wasn’t in the top 1000 either time.

My most recent Nixon ancestor is my 5 times great grandmother whose name I haven’t yet found a record of. She was the first wife of Henry Roberts (1770s-1831) of Wayne Co., NC. She died sometime before ca 1806 when he married Zilpha Carraway as a 2nd wife. The first Mrs. Roberts is a proven daughter of:

John Nixon was born ca 1755/65, perhaps somewhere in eastern North Carolina. His wife’s name is unknown. She died before ca 1803. John made a deed in 1804 to his “son-in-law” Henry Nixon, which proves their connection. John died shortly after that. He appears to be a son of:

Henry Nixon was born before 1747, perhaps well before then, somewhere in eastern North Carolina, presumably. He was married to Sarah, maiden name unknown. Henry died ca 1790/92 in Wayne Co., NC.

I don’t know who Henry’s parents were, nor where they may have come from originally. They are most likely of English, Scots or Northern Irish ancestry (or all three).

I should add a caveat right here. I’m not 100% certain that I’m a Nixon at all. My ancestor Henry Roberts was indeed married to a Miss Nixon as proven by an 1804 deed from her father. However, she might not have been the mother of his oldest son Richard Roberts, born 1790, who is my ancestor. It’s possible that Henry was married prior to Miss Nixon, making her a 2nd wife, thus she wouldn’t be my line. There is also the possibility that Henry isn’t actually Richard Robert’s father, as I haven’t been able to fully prove that. If it turns out he isn’t Richard’s father, then my Nixon connection vanishes.
