Welcome to my Smith genealogy pages. Smith is the number one most common surname in the United States, thus my interest in this surname is limited to those in Carter Co., TN in the 1700s to mid 1800s.

I have other Smith lines. Check them out if interested.

My most recent Smith ancestor is my 4 times great grandmother Celia Smith (1794-1885) who was born in Washington (now Carter) Co., TN. She married Charles Noden George in Carter Co., TN in 1816. They lived there briefly, but soon moved to Blount Co., TN, then to Monroe Co., TN, then over the mountains into Cherokee (now Graham) Co., NC where they lived a few years. After her husband’s death in 1869, she moved into the part of Cherokee County that remained Cherokee County. Celia is a proven daughter of Jacob and Mary (Dugger) Smith.

Jacob Smith (*** links to very old page ***) was born sometime between ca 1740 to the 1760s. I haven’t been able to narrow it down better than that thus far. I do not know where he was born, though NC or VA are strong possibilities. He married a widow, Mary Dugger Goodwin, ca 1784/1787 in what was then Washington Co., NC, but is now Carter Co., TN. Her first husband, Drury Goodwin, died ca 1781/1783. By him she had two children. She had three with Jacob Smith. Jacob is a proven son of Edward Smith.

Edward Smith (*** links to very old page ***) was born ca 1720 (rough estimate) perhaps in Maryland, Pennsylvania or Virginia. Most of what I have on him currently is from the book Tennessee Smithology, Emma Barrett Reeves (1901-1998), 1975. According to Mrs. Reeves, Edward Smith married Catherine Stumph ca 1739 in Culpeper Co., VA. She died ca 1755, and he married 2^nd, to another wife named Catherine, this one Catherine Stonecypher, ca 1757. She died ca 1795, and he married yet another Catherine as his 3^rd wife, perhaps also named Stonecypher, apparently a niece of the prior wife of the same name. I have not personally confirmed any of this thus far, but will certainly attempt to at some point, Lord willing.

I do not know who Edward Smith’s parents were yet.
