Welcome to my Terry genealogy pages. I am interested in the Terry surname in a few select counties in Virginia. I’ll probably expand my area of interest once I’ve learned more about my Terry ancestors.

Terry was the 336^th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 361^st.

My most recent Terry ancestor was my 5 times great grandmother Keziah Terry (c1728-c1809) who married 1^st to James Scott ca 1740s in Caroline Co., VA. He died ca 1757. She married 2^nd, to Richard Murphy ca 1762 in Halifax (later Pittsylvania) Co., VA. They moved to Surry Co., NC by ca 1770 and remained there until the 1790s when they moved to Lincoln Co., KY. Keziah is a proven daughter of:

Benjamin Terry (c1685-1770) married Elizabeth Dickerson ca 1710s in Virginia. They resided in Caroline Co., VA until moving to Halifax (now Pittsylvania) Co., VA where he died ca 1770, she sometime after that. I don’t know for certain who Benjamin’s parents were. Other researchers list him as a child of:

James Terry (d 1744) and Mary Diane Royall of Caroline Co., VA. I have not yet confirmed this. Likewise, others believe James is a son of:

William Terry who immigrated to Virginia in 1652. His wife is Sarah Group, again none of this confirmed by me yet.
