Welcome to my Tutt genealogy pages. I am interested in the Tutt surname in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Tutt is not a common surname in the United States. It didn’t rank in the top 1000 in either 2000 or 2010.

My most recent Tutt ancestor is my 4 times Great Grandmother, Ruth Tutt, born ca 1813 in Buncombe Co., NC. She married John Stewart in Buncombe ca 1830. They lived in that county until just after 1840 when they moved to Union Co., GA where they remained until the late 1860s when they went to Polk Co., TN. Ruth died there between ca 1863 and 1870. John died there after 1871.

Ruth Tutt is a child of Benjamin Tutt of Buncombe Co., NC. Benjamin was born in the 1780s or early 1790s, probably in South Carolina. He came to Buncombe Co., NC before 1810 and married Elizabeth Moore there. He was the only Tutt in North Carolina during that era as far as I’m aware. He died in Buncombe in the 1820s. Elizabeth died there in May 1860.

I don’t know who Benjamin Tutt’s parents were, but it is very likely he’s part of the extensive Tutt family from Culpeper Co., VA some of whom lived in Edgefield Dist., SC and also Lancaster Dist., SC during the time Benjamin was born.

More research is needed to properly determine our Benjamin’s place in the larger Tutt family.
