Gabriel E. Edwards (1849-1938) and Louisa Floyd and Celia Caroline Johnson of NC (Wayne) and SC (Horry)

Gabriel and Celia Edwards are my Great Great Grandparents on my maternal side.

Special thanks to Cecelia Lewis Campbell (1930-2017), Keith Edwards and others for sharing information this family.

Gabriel E. Edwards was born in December 1849 per the 1900 census. This generally agrees with all his other census entries except 1860 which is off, but still close.

∙           1850 census age 5 months, born ca 1849/1850.

∙           1860 census age 12, born ca 1847/48.

∙           1870 census age 21, born ca 1848/49.

∙           1880 census age 30, born ca 1849/50.

∙           1900 census born Dec 1849, age 50.

∙           1910 census age 60, born ca 1849/50.

∙           1920 census age 70, born ca 1849/50.

∙           1930 census age 80, born ca 1849/50.

His obituary, written by his daughter Pearly, states that he was 89 years old, 2 months and 20 days old when he died on 15 Mar 1938. That calculates to a birth date of 25 Dec 1848 which is probably off by one year. If he was born 25 Dec 1849, then that fits all his census entries except 1860. I’m going with 1849 as it is based on primary evidence.

He was born in Wayne Co., NC per the 1850 census which is where he was residing then, but the census also helpfully lists the birth places of each person and he’s listed as born in Wayne. I’m not entirely sure, but he was probably born in or near the Town of Mount Olive where his father owned land at the time. This is in southern Wayne not far from the Duplin county line.

None of the records I’ve seen for Gabriel include a middle initial. However, his tombstone has him as “G. E. Edwards.” I’ve seen others list his middle name as “Emerson” but I don’t know what the source for that is.

Gabriel E. Edwards is a proven son of William Edwards and Rachel (Roberts) Edwards. This is proven by him residing with them on the 1850 and 1860 census, and by his own death certificate which gives their names as his parents.

Gabriel may have been named for his father’s 1^st cousin Gabriel Edwards (c1817), or perhaps both were named after someone else, but I don’t know who, unless of course the Angel Gabriel.

He was home with his parents on the 1850 census in Wayne Co., NC as “Gabriel” age 5/12, born Wayne.

His parents left North Carolina in the 1850s moved to Horry Dist., SC and settled in what later became known as Galivants* Ferry Township, just west of the Town of Aynor.

* Often spelled with two Ls on earlier records, i.e. “Gallivants” Ferry, but only one L now.

He was listed with his parents on the 1860 census in Horry Dist., SC as “Gabriel” age 12, born NC.

I don’t think Gabriel served during the Civil War (1861-1865). He was probably too young, being only 16 when it ended. His older brother Barnabas did serve, and he was only 1 year older.

Horry District became Horry County in 1868.

Gabriel married Louisa Floyd ca 1868 in Horry Co., SC. He was about 18 or 19 then. Unfortunately, South Carolina did not keep marriage records before the early 1900s, so no actual marriage record has been found.

Louisa Floyd was born ca 1841/42 per her age on the 1850 census (8), or ca 1843/44 per her age in 1860 (16). She is a child of William Floyd (1816) and Mary A. (Floyd) Floyd (c1816). She was with her parents on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Horry Dist., SC.

Gabriel and family are listed on the 1870 census in Horry between his parents and brother William Edwards.

Louisa Floyd Edwards died sometime between 1870 and ca 1873 in Horry Co., SC. I don't know where she is buried.

Gabriel E. Edwards married in the 1870s to Celia Caroline Johnson. There is some question about when they married. Their 1900 census entry showed them married for 26 years, which puts it ca 1873/74. However, their 1910 entry shows them married 33 years, or ca 1876/77. I think the 1900 entry is probably closer to correct as they had a child (Virginia) born June 1873, but that would suggest they really married ca 1872. It occurred to me that perhaps Virginia was actually a child of Louisa’s who perhaps died in childbirth with her. That would explain the large gap between Virginia (1873) and the next child (1878) and would also support the ca 1876/77 marriage for Gabriel and Celia. The problem with this is that Virginia’s death certificate lists her mother as Celia Johnson, not Louisa Floyd. Of course Celia would be the only mother she ever knew, but technically her step mother, not biological mother. I could be wrong about that though, but it would explain several things. However, pending evidence to the contrary, I’ll leave Virginia as Celia’s child, and show Gabriel and Celia’s marriage at ca 1870/72. Celia would have been 16 in 1872, so that works.

Celia Caroline Johnson was born 23 Nov 1855 in Horry Dist., SC, a daughter of Allen Warin Johnson and Celia Floyd. Celia was with her parents on the 1860 census, “Celia C.” age 5, and with her widowed mother in 1870, “Carline” age 16.

Gabriel and family are on the 1880 census in Horry.

The 1890 census is lost for South Carolina.

Gabriel and family are listed on the 1900 census in Horry, in Galivants Ferry Township.

Gabriel and family were listed on the 1910 census in Horry Co., SC in Galivants Ferry Township. Of special interest is that Gabriel’s parents were reported to both be born in Scotland, which is not correct. I don’t even think they are of Scottish ancestry, so I wonder why he reported that? Or did someone else provide the information to the census taker? (It comes up again in 1930.)

Celia Caroline Johnson Edwards died on 30 May 1910 (per obituary) in Horry Co., SC. She is buried at the Zion Cemetery in Horry Co., SC, with a shared marker with Gabriel. Her side of the stone reads C. C. Edwards 1854-1910.

Sometime after Celia’s death, Gabriel E. Edwards entered politics and became the very first Mayor of the town of Aynor (per a newspaper article shared with me by Keith Edwards.)

Gabriel is on the 1920 census in Horry residing in Aynor with his son Wyle. His occupation is Salesman at a General Store.

Gabriel is still with his son for the 1930 census, now listed as the Proprietor of a Gas Station. Once again his parents are listed as born in Scotland. I wonder where this comes from? He certainly knew his parents were from NC as were his grandparents, great grandparents, etc. The column asking if he was a veteran was marked “no.”

Gabriel E. Edwards died 15 Mar 1938 in Horry Co., SC of heart failure at age 88.

He is buried beside Celia at the Zion Cemetery (west of Aynor). His side of their shared stone says G. E. Edwards 1849-1938. I've been to their graves just once. They are on the west side of the road (cemetery on both sides of road), and their graves are in the first row, I believe, facing the highway, and easy to find.

Children

Gabriel Edwards and wife Louisa had one child. Gabriel and Celia had ten. Of those 11 children, only one died young. These children are proven by the various census records as well as by their death certificates in many cases, and many of the names were given to me by family members who knew this family well, all of which I’ve confirmed with primary sources since then.

Demaris Eleanor Edwards was born 20 Sep 1869 (per tombstone) in Horry Co., SC. I don't know who she might have been named after, if anyone. Her name could be misspelled a few different ways. On her tombstone it’s carved as “Damaris,” but most times I see this name anywhere it’s “Demaris.” I’m not sure the “proper” spelling in her case.

She was home with her parents for the 1870 census “Damarias” age 1, and in 1880, “Damarias” age 10.

She married Solomon Howard Frye ca 1888/89 in Horry Co., SC. He was born 10 Sep 1869 (exactly 10 days before his wife) (date per tombstone). He’s a son of Benjamin L. Frye and Mourning Carolina Huggins. He was with them on the 1870 census, “Solomon” age 1, and in 1880, “Soloman H.” age 11.

Howard and Demaris were listed on the 1900 census in Horry Co., SC in Galivants Ferry Township. They were next door to James M. Floyd and wife Cornelia J. (Frye), who was Howard’s half-sister. Mr. Floyd was Demaris’s 1^st cousin once removed.

Demaris Eleanor Edwards Frye died in Horry Co., SC on 14 May 1932. She is buried at the Zion Cemetery (just west of Aynor). Her marker reads “Damaris E, wife of S.H. Frye Sep 20 1869 - May 14 1932.” Her death certificate lists her as “Mrs. Demarais Frye” and gives her parents names as “Gabel Edwards” and “Anna Floyd.”

Howard Frye married again ca 1936 to Elease Cook (1913-1981) and had one child with her before his death. After Howard’s death, Elease married a Boyd.

Solomon Howard Frye died 16 Nov 1937 in Horry Co., SC. He is buried at the Zion Cemetery next to Demaris. His marker reads “Solomon Howard Frye Sep 10 1869 - Nov 16 1937.” I wasn’t able to find a death certificate for him.

Howard and Demaris had at least nine children, one of whom died young. Howard and his 2^nd wife had one child.

Olivia Virginia Edwards was born Jun 1873 (per 1900 census) in Horry Co., SC.

Olivia was home with her parents for the 1880 census in Horry Co., SC, “Olivia V.” age 6.

She married William J. Lynch ca 1891/92 (per 1900 census, married 8 years). He was born Sep 1870 in South Carolina. *** Parents? ***

They are on the 1900 census in Horry.

They were “next door” in Marion Co., SC for the 1910 census.

William J. Lynch died after 1910, perhaps in Marion Co., SC or Columbus Co., NC. I didn’t find a death certificate for him, so it was probably in the early 1910s before they were legally required.

The family lived in Columbus Co., NC in 1914 when young daughter Ruth Lynch died there.

Virginia and family are on the 1920 census in Robeson Co., NC. Three of her children at home were listed as married, but their spouses weren’t in the household.

Olivia Virginia Edwards Lynch died at age 55 on 2 Nov 1928 in Dillon Co., SC of “Broncho - Pneumonia.” Her death certificate lists her birth place as Horry Co., SC, and parents as Gabriel Edwards and Caroline Johnson. Vernon Lynch (her son) was the informant. Her place of burial is listed as Mt. Zion Cemetery. There is a cemetery of that name in Dillon County, but I think she’s actually buried at Zion Cemetery in Horry Co., SC where her parents are. I could be wrong though.

William and Virginia had eight known children, one of whom died as a child.

James Frank Edwards was born ca 1876/77 in Horry Co., SC. He may have been named in part after his Uncle James W. Edwards.

He was home with his parents for the 1880 census, “James F.” age 3.

I was unable to find James on the 1900 census.

He was in Coffee Co., GA by 1902, for he married there on 13 Jul 1902 to Lila Eliza Dermott. She was born 1 Dec 1875 in Georgia, a child of Richard (b 1857 NY) and Etta (b 1857 GA). She was with them on the 1900 census in Coffee Co., GA as “Lilla E.” b. Dec 1875, 24, single. I did check to see if James F. Edwards was perhaps listed nearby them in 1900, but didn’t see him. Lila was with her parents on the 1880 census in Pierce Co., GA as “Lilly” age 5, born GA.

Lila has a sister Viola E. Dermott (Dec 1881) who is also home with their parents in 1900. She’d soon marry Wilbur K. Edwards (1880-1961), who was James F. Edwards’ first cousin.

The Edwards moved to Ocilla in Irwin Co., GA after 1900. Irwin County is next to Coffee County so it wasn’t a big move. Lila’s parents moved with them, apparently.

James Frank Edwards died in Ocilla on 9 Dec 1909 at the young age of 31.

Lila, now widowed, is the head of household on the 1910 census. Her mother, also now widowed, is living with her along with other family members and some lodgers. She was listed as a Boarding House Keeper.

She was in the same place on the 1940 census, though her street number had changed.

She died on 1 Sep 1961 at a nursing home in Lake Worth, Palm Beach Co., FL. She is buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Frank and Lila had four children, the oldest of whom died as a teen in an auto accident.

Nettie C. Edwards was born September 1879 (per 1880 census) in Horry Co., SC. I don't know what her “C” initial stands for.

Nettie was home with her parents for the 1880 census in Horry Co., SC, “Nettie C.” age 3 months, born September. She was not found in 1900, and is most likely the one child who had died before then per her mother’s 1900 census entry which showed 10 children born, only 9 still living. As the other nine are accounted for, Nettie has to be the one who had died.

Mary Charlotte Edwards was born Sep 1880 (per 1900 census) in Horry Co., SC. She may have been named in part after her Aunt Mary Edwards and her aunt Mary Floyd. She apparently went by “Lottie” per some records.

Mary C. Edwards married William Daniel Murrow ca 1898/99 (per 1900 census showing them married 1 year), presumably in Horry Co., SC. He was born March 1876 per the 1900 census, or 30 Apr 1871 per his tombstone. He is a son of William Murrow and Lucretia Russ.

Mary and William are with her parents on the 1900 census in Horry, Mary C., born Sep 1880, age 19, married 1 year, 1 child born, 1 child living.” Her husband is listed as Willie D. Murrel, son-in-law, born Mar 1876, age 24, married 1 year, Farm Hand.

Mary and William and their children were listed on their own for the 1910 census in Horry Co., SC in Galivants Ferry. They were next door to her parents.

William D. Murrow died on 1 Jul 1938 in Horry and is buried at Rehobeth Baptist Church Cemetery. His death certificate listed his cause of death as paralysis.

Lottie is listed on the 1940 census in Horry with daughter Willie and family.

Mary Charlotte “Lottie” Edwards Murrow died on 1 Aug 1952 in Gresham, Marion Co., SC and is buried at Rehobeth Baptist Cemetery in Horry.

John Lafayette Edwards was born 23 Jun 1883 (per tombstone) in Horry Co., SC. He may have been named for his uncle John L. Johnson, though I don’t know if his middle name was also Lafayette. He may have also been named, in part, for another uncle, John Edwards (1853).

He was known as “Fate” which was a common nickname for “Lafayette” as it was generally pronounced (in the south) as “Lafate.”

He was with his parents on the 1900 census, “Johnny L.” born Jun 1882, age 17, a Farm Hand.

He married Maude A. Floyd ca 1905/06 in Horry Co., SC per their 1910 census entry that showed them married 4 years.

Maude A. Floyd was born 10 Oct 1885 (per tombstone) in Horry Co., SC, daughter of Hugh James Floyd (1860-1935) and Sarah Gore. Fate Edwards and Maude Floyd were 2^nd cousins.

They are listed on the 1910 census in Horry a few houses from his parents.

On 12 Sep 1918, “John Lafayette Edwards” registered for the draft (World War I), listing his age as 37, birth date as 23 Jun 1881. Described as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, gray hair.

They are on the 1920 census in Horry.

They are on the 1930 census in Horry. Maude’s widowed father is residing with them.

They are on the 1950 census in Horry, in a section described as “Beginning at Pee Dee going eastward to Highway 501 by (Negro) St. John church and school.”

John Lafayette Edwards died on 9 Feb 1955 at the hospital in Mullins, Marion Co., SC. He is buried at the Zion Cemetery. He has two markers, one apparently older, which is inscribed “John Fate Edwards 1883 - 1955.” His other marker is a dual marker for him and his wife, and his side reads “J. L. "Fate" Edwards June 23 1883 - Feb 9 1955.”

Maude Floyd Edwards died on 25 Jun 1970 and is buried beside her husband at Zion. Her side of the shared stone reads “Maude Floyd Edwards Oct 10 1885 - June 25 1970.”

They had two children.

Capitola Edwards was born 20 Mar 1885 (per tombstone) in Horry Co., SC. Her uncommon name was somewhat popular at the time, derived from a character in an 1859 book The Hidden Hand. I don’t know if she had another name.

She was with her parents for the 1900 census, “Capitola,” born Mar 1884, age 16, Farm Hand. She was also with them in 1910, “Capitola,” age 26, single, Farm Laborer.

She married Daniel Payton Rackley ca 1910 (after the census), presumably in Horry Co., SC. He was born 22 Aug 1888 per his tombstone. He is a son of Charles G. Rackley and Mahalia (Edge) Rackley. He was with his widowed father for the 1900 census in Horry in Dogwood Neck Township, “Daniel P.” born Jan 1889, age 11, Farm Laborer. I didn’t find him in 1910.

They are on the 1920 census in Horry in Dogwood Neck.

Capitola Edwards Rackley died on 18 Oct 1948 at age 63. She is buried at the Daniel Edge Cemetery.

Daniel Payton Rackley married again, ca 1949 to Mary Floyd Cox widow of Alexander Cox.

They are listed on the 1950 census in Horry now in Simpson Creek Township.

Mary Floyd Cox Rackley died on 26 Jan 1952 in Horry and is buried at the William C. Gause Cemetery.

Daniel P. Rackley died on 14 Jun 1970, age 81, and is buried at the Daniel Edge Cemetery in Horry.

Daniel and Capitola had three children.

Mollie Edwards was born 20 Mar 1886 (per tombstone) in Horry Co., SC. Prior to her birth, the name “Mollie” was often used as a nickname for in place of “Mary” and rarely it’s own proper name. However, by the time our Mollie was born it had become more popular as an actual given name, which is the case with her.

She was home with her parents for the 1900 census, “Mollie,” born Mar 1886, age 14, Farm Hand. She was with them in 1910 as well, “Mollie,” age 24, single, Farm Laborer.

Mollie married Alexander Tart after 1910, presumably in Horry. He was from Marion Co., SC, born there Apr 1890 (per 1900 census), a son of James Tart and Lizzie Sweat (or Sweatt). He was with his parents for the 1900 census, “Alex,” born Apr 1890, 10. I didn’t find him in 1910.

They are on the 1920 census in Richmond Co., NC in Hamlet.

Alexander Tart apparently died before 1930, for Mollie is back in Horry for that census listed as a widow. She’s in the Town of Aynor. (Note: Alexander wasn’t dead. Apparently the separated and / or divorced, though she was listed as a widow on the next two census records. He didn’t die until 1967.)

Both the oldest daughter and youngest are listed as Ethel. The older one is actually named “Etheal” per other records.

They are in Robeson Co., NC for the 1940 census.

Mollie Edwards Tart died on 28 Aug 1940 in Robeson Co., NC. She is buried at Zion Cemetery in Horry Co., SC.

Her “late” husband James Alexander Tart died on 19 Nov 1967 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC. He’s buried at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Gaston Co., NC.

They had six children.

Pearl Lee Edwards was born 15 Sep 1888 (per tombstone) in Horry Co., SC.

She was home with her parents for the 1900 census, “Pearly E.” born Sep 1888, age 11, Farm Hand.

Pearl married Ollie McRoy Johnson ca 1908/09 (per 1910 census listing them as married 1 year), presumably in Horry Co., SC. Ollie was born 26 Dec 1885 in Horry. His death certificate lists his mother as Catherine Floyd, father as unknown. I don’t know which Catherine Floyd this was, however, she must have died in childbirth with him, or sometime soon after (before 1900).

Ollie was with Albert P. Johnson and Cleopatra “Pet” (Gore) Johnson on the 1900 census as “Olie M.” Johnson, born Dec 1885, age 14, Farm Hand. His relationship to Albert was listed as “Adopted son.” Cleo was listed as having given birth to no children, thus he wasn’t hers, biologically speaking. In rural areas like this, “adopted” children were quite often relatives such as nieces or nephews who’d lost one or both parents. In some rare cases, the child wasn’t related to the adopted parents at all. I don’t know the actual explanation for Ollie. I’m not aware of how either Albert or Cleo might be related to Catherine Floyd, though there are several Johnson - Floyd intermarriages.

If not for the adoption, I would assume that Pearl and Ollie were cousins to some degree, as her mother was a Johnson and related to the bulk of the Horry Johnsons.

Ollie M. Johnson died on 10 Jan 1917 in Horry, age 31 from liver problems. He is buried at Zion Cemetery in Aynor.

Pearlie is on the 1920 census with her in-laws.

Pearl Lee Edwards Johnson married William Pharoe Cook in the 1920s in Horry Co., SC. He was born 25 Nov 1893 in Horry, a son of Benjamin C. Cook. I don’t know who his mother was.

They are listed on the 1930 census in Horry next door to Pearl’s in-laws Albert and Cleopatra Johnson who were residing with Pearl’s daughter Gracie.

They are on the 1940 census in Horry next door to daughter Bertha, who had grandmother Cleopatra (Gore) Johnson with her, now widowed, though listed there as “Patsy.”

Pearl Lee Edwards Johnson Cook died on 30 Mar 1945 at the McLeod Hospital in Florence, SC of lung problems. She is buried at Rehobeth Baptist Cemetery in Horry.

He remarried ca 1946 to Maude Viola Squires who’d been twice widowed by then, first husband was James M. Powers, 2^nd was John T. Turbeville.

I didn’t find William Cook on the 1950 census.

He died on 16 Oct 1974 and is buried at Rehobeth Baptist.

Pearl and Ollie Johnson had four children. She had no children with William Cook as far as I’m aware.

Wyle Edwards was born 6 Apr 1891 (per tombstone) in Horry Co., SC. His name is pronounced like “Wiley.” Special thanks to Keith Edwards for sharing information on this family.

Wyle was my great great uncle. I was 13 when he died, but I don’t recall ever meeting him, unfortunately.

He was with his parents on the 1900 census, “Willey,” born Apr 1891, age 9.

Wyle married Clarkie Elizabeth James on 25 Dec 1909 in Horry Co., SC. She was born 27 Nov 1892 in Horry, a daughter of Edwin P. James and Amanda Rabon, both of whom have deep Horry county roots.

They are on the 1910 census residing with Wyle’s parents.

On 5 Jun 1917, Wyle Edwards registered for the draft (World War I) as “Wyle Edwards,” age 26, born 6 Apr 1891, a Farmer residing at Aynor. Family includes a wife and 4 children. He was described as medium height and build, blue eyes and light hair.

They are on the 1920 census in Horry residing in Aynor. His widowed father is residing with them.

They are on the 1930 census in Aynor. Father Gabriel is still with them.

I was unable to find the family on the 1940 census.

They were “back” in Aynor for the 1950 census.

Clarkie Elizabeth James Edwards died in Horry Co., SC on 15 Nov 1960. She is buried at Aynor Cemetery.

Wyle Edwards died on 19 Oct 1978. His stone reads “Wyle Edwards Apr 6 1891 - Oct 19 1978,” and hers “Clarkie Elizabeth James Edwards Nov 27 1892 - Nov 15 1960 married Wyle Edwards Dec 25 1909.”

Wyle and Elizabeth had 12 children.

Henrietta Edwards was born 6 Jan 1893 (per death certificate) in Horry Co., SC. She was the youngest child of Gabriel and Caroline. She was my great grandmother. Unfortunately I never met her for she died two years before I was born. My mother knew her well though.

She was home with her parents for the 1900 census in Horry Co., SC as “Henrietta,” born Jun 1893, age 6.

Henrietta married Willie Spencer Campbell in 1910 in Horry Co., SC, and moved to Marion County, SC where they remained.

They had six children including my grandfather Alva Gabriel Campbell, named for his grandfather Gabriel Edwards and for his other grandfather, Spencer Alva Campbell.
