James Graham is probably my 5 times great uncle.
James Graham was born 1755/65 per his ages on the 1800 census 26-44 (1755/74) and 1810 census of 45+ (before 1765). Those work out to 1755/65. I don’t know where he was born, perhaps in South Carolina. He was most likely of Scottish or English ancestry.
What is now Horry County was part of Craven County until 1769 when Georgetown District was created from it. The area remained Georgetown until 1801 when Horry District was carved out from it. It remained Horry District until 1868 when all districts became counties, thus it was Horry County from then on.
I don’t know who James’s parents are. He is certainly closely related to the other Grahams in Horry. He might be a son of John Graham and Mary Johnston, or perhaps he’s a son of widow Jennet Graham.
James Graham was not listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, so perhaps not married yet. There is an entry for Jennet Graham which has one woman, presumably Jennet, and one male over 16, which could be James. If so, then Jennet would probably be his mother. Of course I’m only speculating here.
James Graham married Elizabeth --- in the 1790s. She was born ca 1769/1770 per her age on the 1850 census (80). I don’t know her maiden name.
They are listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown Dist., SC in Kingston County. There is an older woman living with him. Is that Jennet Graham from the 1790 census? Could be, but again, this is only speculation. They are listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown Dist., SC in Kingston County just two houses from William Graham (bef 1755) and nine from John Graham Senr.

On 6 May 1817 James Graham made a deed of gift to his family, a Last Will and Testament in essence. He named:

∙ daughter Martha
∙ daughter Elizabeth
∙ son John
∙ son William
∙ daughter Sarah Ann
James Graham signed. Witnesses were Wm H. Grice, and John Gunter.

James Graham apparently died between 1817 and 1820.
There are two James Grahams listed on the 1820 census in Horry, one listed as “Senr” and the other as son of Gilbert. Gilbert’s son is too young to be the same James. The other entry is old enough in 1820 (45+) but I think it’s a different man. There is a widow Elizabeth listed in 1820 who is likely the widow of our James Graham. This census is alphabetical so I can’t determine neighbors.

On 2 Dec 1822 Elizabeth Graham deeded a Negro named Abram, 4 years old, to Enoch Stephens for $200. She signed with a mark. Witnesses were Matthew Martin and Briant Pitman. Pitman proved the deed before Joseph Graham, JP on 30 — 1823 (no month listed!). (Horry Co., SC Deed Book B1, pp. 297-298.)
Enoch Stevens was Elizabeth’s son-in-law.
On 11 Aug 1826, Elizabeth Graham was made Administratrix of the estate of Sarah Ann Graham, deceased. (Horry Co., SC Probates Book A, p. 16).
Sarah Ann was her daughter.
Elizabeth is listed as head of household on the 1830 census in Horry. She isn’t listed near any other Grahams.

In 1833, Elizabeth Graham was made administratrix of the estate of William Graham deceased (her son).
Elizabeth is listed as head of household on the 1840 census in Horry. Son John Graham is next door.

On 23 Dec 1842, Elizabeth Graham made her Will in Horry naming:
∙ son John Graham
∙ dau Martha McCracken, her children Jane Martin, Andrew McCracken and Thomas R. Mitchel McCracken
∙ dau Elizabeth Stevens wife of Enoch Stevens
∙ children of my daughter Jane Rauls wife of John Rauls (or Rawls)
∙ Joel B. Skipper and Edward B. Wheeler my Executors
Elizabeth signed with a mark. Witnesses were A. B. Skipper, Ann D. Dawsey and Harret E. C. Skipper (her mark). Proven by Arthur B. Skipper on 15 May 1850 meaning Elizabeth was dead by then.
An Elizabeth Graham is listed on the 1845-1846 tax lists for Horry with 620 acres and 6 slaves.
Elizabeth (—) Graham died in May 1850 per her entry on the 1850 census Mortality Schedule. She was listed as “Elizabeth Graham” age 80, born SC, died May, cause of death was listed as “C.” I don’t know what that stood for. Cholera perhaps? Several others were also listed with a C in that column.
James Graham and wife Elizabeth had seven children as proven by James’s 1817 deed of gift and some also by Elizabeth’s 1842 Will.
1. Mary Graham (1790/94) was named in her father’s 1817 deed of gift, but not her mother’s 1842 Will so perhaps dead by then with no heirs.
2. Jane Graham (1794/1800-bef 1842) was named in her father’s 1817 deed of gift, and in her mother’s 1842 Will, which implied she was dead by then. She married John Rawls.
3. Sarah Ann Graham (1794/1800-1826) was named in her father’s 1817 deed of gift. She died in 1826, unmarried. Her mother Elizabeth was Administratrix of her estate.
4. Elizabeth Graham (1800/04-1840s) was named in her father’s 1817 deed of gift, and in her mother’s 1842 Will. She died before 1850. She married Enoch Stevens/Stephens.
5. John Graham (c1805-aft 1870). He was named in his father’s 1817 deed of gift, and in his mother’s 1842 Will. He married Elizabeth —.
6. William Graham (1804/10-1833). He was named in his father’s 1817 deed of gift, and died ca 1833 when his mother was made administratrix of his estate.
7. Martha Graham (c1810-aft 1860) married — McCracken. She was named in her father’s 1817 deed of gift, and in her mother’s 1842 Will which also named Martha’s children.
