Marvin Alan Grant was born in Topton, Cherokee Co., NC in 1946 to Garland S. Grant and Luella George Grant. He was named for his grandfather, Marvin R. Grant (1902-1992). To avoid confusion, the family called him by his middle name, Alan. However, when he started work at IBM, he was known by his coworkers as Marvin.

Alan’s parents moved the family constantly so he wasn’t brought up in just one place. They were living in Mullins, in Marion Co., SC when he met my mother, Faye Campbell. They graduated from Mullins High School in 1964 and married a few months later.

Faye was born in Marion Co., SC and grew up there. Fun fact, the same doctor who delivered her also delivered me, nearly 19 years later. Her parents are Alva G. Campbell and Gertrude Turner Campell, both also natives of Marion Co., SC. Faye has deep roots in Marion Co., SC and in neighboring Horry Co., SC.

Alan worked at Burlington Industries, Selma Hosiery Mill in Dillon, SC while they lived in Mullins. He had a bad car accident one day in November or December of 1965 on a wet road and flipped his car near Dillon. He woke up in Dillon Hospital. Fortunately he wasn’t badly injured. His father came down from Grundy, VA and helped us moved there with them.

In Grundy, Buchanan Co., VA we resided in an old mining camp. Alan drove a truck for Pepsi-Cola. It was a rugged area and roads were treacherous in the winter and his first day was so harrowing that he quit.

They told me that the tap water there was black from the coal mines so my uncle Richard, then a teen, had to get my formula water from a spring up in the mountains. This was in the dead of winter.

Around January we moved to Marietta, Cobb Co., GA and lived in an apartment rented to us by Alan’s aunt Bobby Grant Sawyer. There he worked with Tom as a glazier and helped install glass in homes and businesses. He didn’t like that job, especially after a scaffolding collapse left him hanging four stories above the ground in Atlanta. He was unhurt, but shaken. He continued to work there until after Uncle Tom quit, then he quit too.

We moved from Marietta to Enfield, Halifax Co., NC, where he worked for Georgia Pacific (lumber company) a short while with his father as a saw filer trainee.

Alan got a job with IBM in 1967 and we moved to Durham Co., NC and resided in the country north and east of the city. There we remained until ca 1972. Then we moved to the country east of Hillsborough, in Orange Co., NC. We lived in B&W Trailer park off of Business US 70 for about a year or so, then moved to Byrdsville off of old Highway 10 just a few miles from where we’d been, still south and east of Hillsborough. We remained there until 1975 when Alan transferred to Columbia, SC. We lived in Eastover, Richland Co., SC which was near Columbia. We didn’t remain there long as he soon got himself transferred back to North Carolina. We moved to Kinston, Lenoir Co., NC for a few months with uncle Garland Grant, Jr, then back to Hillsborough and Byrdsville where they remained until they bought property near Prospect Hill in Caswell Co., NC in 1988 and moved there with his parents, Garland and Luella. They remained there several years until finally moving to Marion, SC into my mother’s parents old home in Marion.

Alan died in 2013 at the hospital in Florence, Florence Co., SC, age 66. He’s buried at Palmetto Gardens in Marion, Marion Co., SC.
