James James (c1775/80-aft 1830) and Ann Wood (1784/90-1841) of Marion Co., SC
[James Home] - [Table of Contents] - James James

James James and Ann (Wood) James are my 4th Great Grandparents, assuming they are the parents of my ancestor Pinkney James, which isn’t proven.
James James was born ca 1775/1780 per census analysis.
∙ 1810 census age 26-44, born 1765/1784.
∙ 1820 census age 45+ (before 1775) or 26-44, born 1775/1794.
∙ 1830 census age 50-59, born 1770/1780.
It isn’t clear which adult male he is on the 1820 census, but the rest confirm a birth date of the 1770s. If he’s the older male in 1820, then he was born ca 1770/75. If the younger, then ca 1775/80.
James was likely born in the Maiden Down Swamp area which is north and west of Mullins in Marion Co., SC, but was part of Georgetown District at the time of his birth.
James James appears to be a son of William James and Elizabeth Welch as suggested by a 1799 deed wherein James James and Elizabeth (William’s widow) and others sell property that had belonged to William. It doesn’t explicitly state they are William’s heirs, but one can infer that.
James James appears to be with his parents on the 1790 census in Georgetown Dist., SC. William James had two males over 16, one being himself, the other possibly James, if born 1770/74. William also had one male aged under 16 (born 1774/1790) which could be James if born 1775/80.
On 13 Feb 1796, James James and John Irvin witnessed a deed between John McKendree and George James for land on the south west side of Peedee River between Back Swamp and Black Creek. This is present day Florence County, so this might not be our James James. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book F, pp. 148-150.)
On 16 Mar 1799 James James, & Elizabeth James and Mary James & Sarah James & Ann James of Liberty Co., SC, made a deed to William Burket of the same place, for 30 pounds sterling for 125 acres in Georgetown District on the north side of Maidendown Swamp beginning on Elias Miller land ... including waters of Little Peedee being part of a tract of 640 acres granted to William James 15 Feb 1786. James James signed, Elizabeth James made her mark, “Sary” James made her mark, Mary James made her mark, and “Anny” James made her mark. The deed was witnessed by Nathan Grice, Charles Powell and Nathaniel Miller. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book A, pp. 74-76.)
William Burket sold the above to Dreadzell Runnels on 3 Dec 1799 and in his deed he mentioned that William James was now deceased. In his description of the land he also mentioned Henry Flowers corner and David Runels’s line. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book A, pp. 76-78.)
The above deeds seem to prove (or strongly suggest) that James James was a son of William James who was dead by 1799.
Elizabeth James, William’s widow, was head of household on the 1800 census in Marion Dist., SC. She had one apparent son age 16-25 with her, born ca 1774/84. That is probably James James.
James James was named on 30 Aug 1800 in the Estate of Henry Flowers, as having a judgment against him. (Marion Co., SC Inventory Book I page 10 as published in the Pee Dee Queue.)
On 28 Feb 1804 James James was one of the purchasers at the Estate sale for Richard Taylor, Esquire, deceased. (Marion Co., SC Sales Book A page 210 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).
James James married Ann Wood in the 1800-1808 time-frame, in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1784/90 per census analysis, a daughter of John Wood and Sarah B. —, as named in John’s 1808 Will.
On 19 Mar 1808, John Wood made his Will in Marion Dist., SC naming his wife Sarah Wood, leaving her his plantation where he lived, but after her death it was to go to “my daughter Anne’s son Adin James.” He named his children John Wood, Sarah Chinners, Rebecca Legett, Martha Legett and Anne James, and also son Jesse Wood. He named his son Jesse Wood and David Legett as his Executors. John Wood signed the Will. Witnesses were James Legette, James James and John Bath (signed with mark).
On 9 Feb 1809 James James witnessed a deed between John Dimery and Hardy Harbert Chinners for land on the Southwest side of the Little Pee Dee River. Other witnesses were David Legett and John Wood. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book E, pp 21-22.)
James James was not listed on the 1809 voter list in Marion Dist., SC.
They are on the 1810 census in Marion Dist., SC.

My analysis (who each person *might* be):
1m 26-44 (1765/1784) James James (1770/80)
2m 0-9 (1800/1810) 1. Addin W. James (1804/1808) son
2. Son? (1808/1810)
1f 16-25 (1784/1794) Ann Wood James (1784/90) wife
On 3 May 1810 James James was named as one of the appraisers for the Estate of Samuel Brown. (Marion Co., SC Inventory Book I page 144 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).
James James was listed on the 1811 Marion Dist., SC Tax list, and charged with 50 cents tax.
James James was listed on the 1814 Marion Dist., SC Tax list, and charged with 19 cents tax.
On 24 Apr 1817, James James and John C. Davis witnessed the Will of James Davis in Marion Dist., SC. James Davis named his wife Sarah, son Theodore Gourdine Davis, nephew John Davis. He named Executors: Friends John Richardson, John C. Davis, Thomas P. Davis and nephew John Davis. James James proved the Will in court on 2 Feb 1818.
On 15 Dec 1818, Francis Evans, Planter, of Marion Dist., SC, made a deed to James James, Planter, of the same place for 100 acres on Reedy Creek on the north west side of Little Peedee originally granted to William Miller on 5 Mar 1787. Signed by Francis Evans, witnessed by St. Welch and Wm Welch. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book H, pp. 138-139.)
They are on the 1820 census in Marion. There are two adult males in the household, so it’s not clear which is James, or who the other one might be. Ann’s age is off on this census as well. It might not be a trustworthy entry, i.e. information given by a neighbor or someone who didn’t know the family all that well.

On 20 Nov 1821 James James was listed among the debtors to the Estate of John Henry, Merchant, Deceased. Interestingly, I've found most of my ancestors and numerous other relatives listed in this same Estate. (Marion Co., SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 14 published in the Pee Dee Queue).
James James was not named on the 1824 Marion Dist, SC tax list.
They are listed on the 1830 census in Marion.

My analysis (who each person *might* be):
1m 50-59 (1770/1780) James James (1770/80)
1m 10-14 (1815/1820) Pinkney J. James (1816) son
1m 0-4 (1825/1830) Son (1825/1830) maybe Henry L. James (c1830)
1f 40-49 (1780/1790) Ann Wood James (1784/90) wife
2f 5-9 (1820/1825) 1. Daughter? (1820/1825)
2. Daughter? (1820/1825) maybe Martha A. James (c1822)
I didn’t find James James on the 1840 census. He may have died before then. I didn’t find any Will or probate records for him.
I did not find Ann on the 1840 census either. She died sometime before 29 Nov 1841, for on that date an Administration bond for her estate was issued to Ebenezer Legett to be her Administrator (he was her nephew). Bondsmen were Ebenezer Legett, John Nelson Legett and Jesse Legett (nephew).
Her estate srecord mentioned that 5 heirs were paid $32.78, but unfortunately, the heirs were not named! (Probate Roll # 429, Ann James, published in “Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One,” by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 252).
Ann’s estate records stated she had five heirs in 1841 who were paid out of her estate. Unfortunately their names weren’t given. Their son Addin James is proven by being named in his grandfather John Wood’s Will in 1808. I believe I’ve identified four of the five, Addin, Pinkney, Henry L., and Martha, leaving a daughter born ca 1820/25 unidentified and probably a son born 1800/10 who may have died young, making six children in total.
1. Addin W. James (1804/08-1842) m. Celia Jane Phillips.
3. Son (1815/1820) probably Pinkney J. James (1816) m Sophia J. Bryant.
4. Daughter (1820/1825) probably Martha A. James (c1822) m John L. Baxley.
6. Son (1825/1830) probably Henry L. James (c1830) m Ann Lloyd.
Addin W. James was born ca 1804/1810 per his ages on the 1810 and 1820 censuses. We know he was born before 19 Mar 1808 since he was named in his grandfather’s Will of that date, thus we can narrow it down to ca 1804/1808.
In the aforementioned Will, his grandfather John Wood left him his plantation but only after the death of his wife Sarah, who didn’t die until 1837.
“Addin” is an unusual name. Is it a variant of “Aden?” I don’t know what his “W” initial stood for. Perhaps Wood after his grandparents? That’s just speculation at this point.
Addin seems to be with his parents on the 1810 census, aged under 10 (c1800/1810) and apparently home in 1820 aged 10-15 (c1804/1810).
Addin James was listed on the 1824 Marion Tax list, and taxed $29.05 which suggests he had much property, perhaps his father’s land.
He isn’t with his parents in 1830. He was at least 22 by then, so could have been residing anywhere.
Addin W. James married Celia Jane Phillips ca 1835, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. Celia was born ca 1810/11 in Marion Dist., SC, daughter of Philip Phillips (d 1811) and Elizabeth Lewis (d 1838).
They are listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist., SC. He is marked in the employment section as being in Manufactures and Trades. He was on the next page (but not too far) from Pinkney James and several other James, all probably closely related.

My Analysis (who each person *might* be):
1m 30-39 (1800/1810) Addin W. James (c1804/08)
1f 20-29 (1810/1820) Celia Jane Phillips James (c1811) wife
2f 0-4 (1835/1840) 1. Mary Jane James (1835/40) daughter
2. Anna Maria James (c1838) daughter
Addin was dead before 20 Mar 1842 which was the earliest date I found in his Estate records. The same records mention he had three heirs, widow Celia Jane James, and minor children Maria James, and Mary Jane James. (Marion Co., SC Ordinary's Real Estate Book 1826-1843, page 115, published in the Pee Dee Queue.)
I was unable to find Celia Jane on the 1850 census.
She was “back” in Marion for the 1860 census next to her widowed sister-in-law Catherine Rice Phillips (widow of Zachariah).

I couldn’t find Celia on the 1870 census. Perhaps she was in that section of Reaves Township where so many of my relatives were missed that year.
She was on the 1880 census in Marion in Rowell Township near her brothers Benjamin and Francis M. Phillips and sister Elizabeth Phillips Collins.

Celia Jane Phillips James died sometime after 1880.
Addin W. James and Celia had three children, Mary Jane, Anna Maria and William Joseph. After Addin’s death, Celia had three more children in her widowhood, their father(s) unknown: James B. James, Robert Evander James and Marion D. James.
Son (1800/1810). James James has an apparent son this age with him on the 1810 census, aged under 10 (c1800/1810). He’s gone by 1820 so perhaps dead by then, or not listed for some reason. The 1820 census is a bit off for James James’s family, so it’s possible this son was indeed still at home then and improperly enumerated, or not at all.
This *could* be Malachi James (c1807) who was in 1840 Marion census, and in Horry in 1850 and 1860. He’s about the only one who matches, age-wise. He was near Pinkney James in 1840 and not far from A. W. James. He’s undoubtedly related, but I can’t say whether a son of James James or not.
Son (1815/1820). James James has an apparent son this age with him on the 1820 census, aged under 10 (c1810/1820) and home in 1830, aged 10-14 (1815/1820).
I believe this is my ancestor Pinkney J. James (1816) but can’t prove that. He does fit, but others do as well, namely Robert Wilson James (c1818) who was also in the same area, so undoubtedly related somehow.
The reason I believe it’s Pinkney instead of Robert, is his proximity to members of the Wood family in 1840 and 1850. Circumstantial, but it’s all I have at present. See his page for more information.
Daughter (1820/1825). James James had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (born ca 1820/1825).
This could be Martha James (c1822) who married John Baxley. She does fit age-wise. Furthermore, none of the other James households in 1830 had a daughter her age excepting Edwin James who moved away right after 1830, so not likely her father. Based on those two pieces of circumstantial evidence, I’m going to put Martha James into this family.
John L. Baxley was born ca 1806/07 in Marion Dist., SC. I don’t know who his parents were. John and Martha married before 1840. They are listed on the 1840 census in Marion between Jesse and Abner Legett (Martha’s 1st cousins), and eight houses from Pinkney James, her probable brother.

I wasn’t able to find Martha on the 1880 census. She may have been dead by then, or perhaps remarried.
Daughter (1820/1825). James James had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (born ca 1820/1825).
I don’t know who this might have been.
Son (1825/1830). James James had an apparent son this age with him on the 1830 census, aged under 5 (born ca 1825/1830).
This *could* be Henry L. James (c1830-1869) who lived in the same area and fits age-wise. If we look at the 1830 census, both James and Malachi James had one son under 5 (c1825/1830). Malachi’s son that age is identified as Abner James (c1830) so that removes him as a potential father for Henry, unless Henry or Abner’s age is off slightly.
I wasn’t able to find Henry L. James on the 1850 census. He would have been around 20, so might have been residing with someone as a laborer and left off the census.
Henry L. James married Ann Lloyd before ca 1854 in Marion Dist., SC. She was born 2 May 1841 per her death certificate, or 2 May 1840 per tombstone. 1840 works better with her 1850 census entry. She was a child of William Lloyd and Charlotte Woodward. The Lloyds are on the 1840 census just three houses from Pinkney J. James.
Ann is with her parents on the 1850 census in Marion, “Ann” age 10. They were about five houses from John L. Baxley and wife Martha (James) Baxley, who would be Henry’s sister.
Henry and Ann are on the 1860 census two houses from likely brother Pinkney J. James and two from possible namesake Henry James (1810-1898), relationship unknown. Twelve year old William Flowers is living with them. He could be related or a hired laborer (or both). I looked for him back on the 1850 census and didn’t find a perfect age match for him. There were two Williams listed therein age 5 which was the closest. One was a son of John Flowers (c1818) and Sarah (c1828). The other was a son of apparent widow Elizabeth Flowers (c1817). I have no additional data on either of those families at present.

According to Sellers, H. L. James served as a Private in Company F, Fourth Regiment Cavalry for the Civil War. Sellers said he died in 1874, but that is incorrect.
He enlisted 3 Feb 1862 at Georgetown, SC.
Henry L. James died in Nov 1869 per the 1870 census mortality schedule. He was listed in Le Gette Township, as Henry L. James, 40, married, born SC, Farmer, died November (1869), of “Abses on the Brain.”
Ann is listed on the 1870 census. Her widowed mother was residing with her. Henry James (1810) was two houses away.
