Alexander Lane (c1790-c1858) and Lucinda Blackman? of Marion Co., SC

Alexander and Lucinda (Blackman?) Lane are my 4th Great Grandparents.

Alexander Lane was born ca 1789/90 per his age on the 1850 census (60). The same record lists his birth place as Marion Dist., SC, though in 1790 Marion was still part of Georgetown District.

Alexander Lane is a proven son of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford, as named in Osborne’s 1840 Estate records as well as by W. W. Sellers in his book on Marion County published in 1901.

Alexander seems to be with his parents on the 1790 census, aged under 16 (1774/1790), and apparently home in 1800 aged 10-15 (1784/1790) and perhaps home in 1810 aged 16-25 (1784/1794), though it’s possible that isn’t him but another son.

Alexander Lane served as a Private in Cpt. Elisha Bethea’s Company, 5th Regiment, South Carolina Militia from 29 Jun 1812 to 29 Sep 1812. This was for the War of 1812, though I don’t know what, if any, action he may have participated in.

Around that same time, ca 1810-1812, Alexander Lane married Lucinda Blackman (alias Blackmon) in Marion Dist., SC. The only evidence we have for her maiden name is what Sellers wrote about her in his book, and he wasn’t entirely sure whether she was a Blackman or not, so there is some question still. No other proof has been found supporting or refuting this as her surname. There were Blackmans in the area, and they were associated with the Lanes, so it is entirely reasonable to assume Sellers was correct, but there will always be doubt.

Lucinda, also Cynthia, Blackman was born ca 1794/95 per her age on the 1860 census (65), or ca 1809/10 per her age on the 1850 census (40), which can’t be correct. The ca 1795 date works with her earlier census records and works with a marriage of ca 1812.

Her parents are unknown. There are several potentials for her in the area, but scant evidence as to which could be hers. I do believe they are all related to her, but I haven’t been able to sort them out with any confidence. One of Alexander’s sisters, Elizabeth Lane, married John Blackman (1777-1862), so we have to wonder if Lucinda was his sister. John is supposedly a son of “Old Tory” John Blackman who died ca 1781. If that is correct, then Lucinda can’t be his sister for Old Tory John died over a decade before she was born, thus John could be her uncle or cousin but not her brother unless he’s not a son of Old Tory John after all. See my Blackman pages for more on that subject.

Alexander Lane is listed on the 1820 census in Marion Dist., SC. Unfortunately it’s alphabetical so we can’t determine who his neighbors were.

On 3 Feb 1852, Alexander Lane and wife “Cinthia” sold land to Joseph R. Bass for $231.60, being 152 2/3 acres on Buck Swamp. He signed, “Cynthia” made her mark. Witnesses were Robert A. Cox and Celia Parker. On 26 Apr 1852, Cynthia Lane relinquished her rights to the land before J. R. Bass. Witnessed by David S. Bass. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book V, p. 394.)

Joseph R. Bass (1786-1854) is not related to the Lanes as far as I know, but his wife Mercy Crawford was Alexander’s 1st cousin once removed. Robert A. Cox (c1829) was a School Teacher who resided with Joseph Bass at the time. I don’t know who Celia Parker was. David S. Bass was Joseph Bass’s son-in-law.

On 26 Apr 1852, Alexander and “Cinthia” made a deed to J. W. Moody for $600 it also being 152 2/3 acres on Buck Swamp. He signed, she made her mark. Witnesses were David S. Bass and E. T. Bass.

(Marion Co., SC Deed Book V, p. 394.)

Josiah W. Moody (c1824) was married to Mary Lane, niece of Alexander (daughter of James Lane). Enos T. Bass is a son of Joseph R. Bass.

According to a statement by Alexander’s son Joseph Lane, Alexander fell into debt and “lost” the above land to Moody. This was in the estate papers of James Lane Sr, Alexander’s brother for some reason. Perhaps James Lane owned the land by the time he died in 1872?

Alexander Lane died before 1860 in Marion Dist., SC. There was no Will, estate or probate records as far as I’ve been able to find. That may be because the land he “lost” in 1852 was all he had, thus nothing to be divided in his estate.

Cynthia is listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist., SC.

Lucinda “Cynthia” Blackman Lane died before the 1870 census in Marion Co., SC, presumably.

There is a marker for Alexander and Lucinda, as well as for his parents, at Catfish Fish Creek Baptist Church Cemetery near Latta in present day Dillon County, South Carolina:

Alexander Lane 1787-1859 War of 1812 Vet Lucinda Blackman 1795-1867.

Helen Lane Wiggins and Calvin G. Lane (1924-2012) had the marker made. They are both descendants of Alexander and Lucinda via their son John Osborne Lane (1831-1918). You can see it at Findagrave.com

There was no estate, Will or probate records for Lucinda either.

W. W. Sellers outlined Alexander Lane and family in his book published in 1901:

Alexander Lane, the third son of Osborne, I think, married a Miss Blackman (in this I may be mistaken) ; he lived and died on upper Buck Swamp, below Latta, and near where his father lived and died. Alexander Lane had and raised a numerous family of sons and daughters, only a few of whom are known to the writer. Samuel Lane, the oldest son, as I suppose, now a very old man, married, first, Sarah Coward, a daughter, of Wilson Coward, who owned the lands whereon Dillon now is situated, and by her had six or seven children, two of whom only were sons, William B. and Lane. One of these emigrated to Texas some years ago, having a family (increasing) when he left. Joseph Lane, another son of old Alexander, married twice (don't know to whom), and had several sons; those known are Alexander, William and Elisha—there are, perhaps, other sons and daughters ; he died some years ago ; was an honest, hard-working man, a good soldier in the war. Osborne Lane, another son of Alexander, married a Christmas, and lives near Mallory, on Little Reedy Creek ; he has several sons, the names of whom are unknown ; he is an honest, hard-working man and a good citizen. Another son of Alexander married a Miss Hensey, and has several sons—has removed to Florence County, and it is said is well to do. Another son of old Alexander, Robert Lane, married a Miss Rogers, and has a family, about whom the writer knows nothing. Another son of old Alexander, Leonard, was killed in the war. They were all good soldiers in the Confederate war.

Children

No Will, probate, or estate records have been found that prove the children of Alexander and Lucinda. The 1850 census proves five who were still at home then: Robert, Charlotte, John, Stephen and Leonard. Joseph is a proven son of Alexander by his own statement in the estate record of his uncle James Lane (died 1872).

Sellers names some of the above and also Samuel and Osborne. All told, that is eight children proven by census, Sellers and other records.

The 1820, 1830 and 1840 census show a few other children who are not named in any of the sources already cited. Those were apparently not remembered by Sellers. Also note that he didn’t mention any of Alexander’s daughters of whom he had a few including my ancestor Charlotte Lane. All told, there are at least 13 children, 7 positively identified, 6 not.

Samuel Lane was born April 1813 per his 1900 census entry, in Marion Dist., SC. He could have been named for his uncle Samuel Smith (1784-1857), but that’s just a wild guess on my part.

W. W. Sellers lists him as a son of Alexander Lane. I haven’t seen any other proof, but he does fit based on census analysis.

He appears to be with his parents for the 1820 census, aged under 10 (born 1810/1820), and home in 1830 aged 10-14 (1815/1820) which isn’t a perfect match, but close enough.

Samuel Lane married Sarah Ann Coward before ca 1839 in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1814/15 per her age on the 1860 census (45) which works much better than her 1850 entry (age 24). She is a daughter of Wilson Coward and Sarah (—). Sellers gave her father’s name as Wilson Coward, and that’s further proven by his Will dated 28 Mar 1853 in which he includes daughter Sarah Lane.

Samuel Lane is on the 1840 census in Marion District next to father-in-law Wilson Coward.

Sarah was named in the estate papers of her brother Joel Coward in 1860 as his sister “Sarah Ann Lane who married Samuel Lane.”

Sarah Ann Coward Lane died sometime in the 1860s, presumably in Marion Dist., SC.

Samuel is listed on the 1870 census by himself and only 40, but I’m reasonably sure this is him for I know of no other Samuel in the area it could be.

Samuel Lane and his new young family are on the 1880 census in Marion County near several Hyatts, undoubtedly related to Albra.

Samuel Lane died sometime after 1900. Manning Township became part of Dillon County when it was formed in 1910. I don’t know where he is buried.

 W. W. Sellers had this to say about Samuel:

Samuel Lane, the oldest son, as I suppose, now a very old man, married, first, Sarah Coward, a daughter, of Wilson Coward, who owned the lands whereon Dillon now is situated, and by her had six or seven children, two of whom only were sons, William B. and Lane. One of these emigrated to Texas some years ago, having a family (increasing) when he left.

Unidentified Daughter (1810/1820). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1820 census, aged under 10 (1810/1820). She was gone by 1830, so either dead or married by then.

This could be Margaret Lane (c1815) who married Emmanuel Johnson. Her age is right, but her approximate marriage date (ca 1830/37) doesn’t work well, for if she married around then, why was she not with her parents in 1830? I have nothing linking Margaret to Alexander other than that she fits age-wise into this slot in his household on the 1820 census. She did name her second daughter Charlotte (1838) perhaps after her sister Charlotte (1833)? I should note that Margaret also fits in the households of John Lane and Thomas Lane.

Unidentified Daughter (1810/1820). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1820 census, aged under 10 (1810/1820). She was gone by 1830, so either dead or married by then.

I have no clues as to who this daughter might have been.

Unidentified Son (1815/1820). Alexander Lane had an apparent son this age with him on the 1820 census, aged under 10 (1810/1820). He was still home in 1830 aged 10-14 (1815/1820), and gone by 1840, so married or dead by then.

There are two potential matches for this son, both born ca 1819/20: William C. Lane (c1820) and Benjamin Lane (c1820). Benjamin was just two houses from Alexander in 1840, but William was nearby too, about ten houses away.

I have no evidence that makes one of the above more likely to be Alexander’s son than the other, but based only on the 1840 census I’d go with Benjamin being this son, but I could very easily be wrong. If he is their son, he may have been named for Benjamin Blackman who *might* be Lucinda’s father.

Benjamin Lane was born ca 1819/20 per his age on the 1850 census (30). His 1840 census entry puts him in his 20s, or born ca 1810/1820 which works with being born ca 1819/20.

Benjamin Lane married Elizabeth Johnson before 1840 in Marion Dist., SC. Elizabeth was born 1819/20 per her age on the 1850 census (30). She is a child of Benjamin Johnson and Mary (—), who are my ancestors, thus Elizabeth is my aunt by blood as well as by marriage.

They are on the 1840 census next to Elizabeth’s widowed mother Mary, and two houses from Benjamin’s likely parents.

They are on the 1850 census in Marion District next door to my ancestor Mary Barnes Campbell, who isn’t related to them as far as I’m aware. However, Mary’s son Ebenezer Campbell would shortly marry Benjamin’s sister Charlotte Lane.

Benjamin Lane died in the 1850s, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. There were no probate or estate records, probably because he owned no property.

Widow Elizabeth is on the 1860 census next to her brother Asa Johnson.

* Clearly an “L” but should be an “S” for Samuel Lane.

I was unable to find Elizabeth on the 1870 census. I’ve discovered that there are numerous families missing from Marion County on that census, especially in Reeves/Reaves Township where she was probably residing.

She is “back” for the 1880 census, residing with her widowed sister Martha Johnson Perritt.

I was unable to locate Elizabeth Johnson Lane on the 1900 census, probably dead by then.

Unidentified Daughter (1820/1825). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (1820/1825). She was gone by 1840 so either dead or married by then.

This could be Thursay Lane who was born ca 1822/23 per her age on the 1850 census (27). She married Willis Finklea before ca 1839, so her birth date and marriage date fit well for this unidentified daughter of Alexander Lane. In fact, it almost has to be her because Thursay doesn’t fit anywhere else at least via census analysis.

Willis Finklea was born ca 1819/20 in Marion Dist., SC, a son of Willis Finklea (1780s-1842) and Mary Bryant.

There were several men named Willis Finklea in Marion at the same time, so it can be a tad confusing.

They are on the 1840 census in Marion District next to his father Willis Sr.

It appears that Thursay Lane Finklea died in the 1860s for Willis had a new wife named Elizabeth by the time of the 1870 census. She was born ca 1824/25 per her age on that census (45). I don’t know her maiden name.

I didn’t find Willis Finklea on the 1880 census. He may have died in the 1870s. I didn’t find his 2nd wife Elizabeth either. She may have also died or remarried by 1880.

Unidentified Daughter (1820/1825). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (1820/1825) and still home in 1840 aged 15-19 (1820/1825). She was gone by 1850 so either dead or married by then.

I don’t know who this might have been. I have no suspects.

Unidentified Daughter (1825/1830). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1830 census, aged 0-4 (1825/1830) and still home in 1840 aged 10-14 (1825/1830). She was gone by 1850 so either dead or married by then.

This is probably Sarah Lane (c1825) wife of James R. Bailey. Joy Bailey, a descendant, told me long ago that Sarah was a Lane and a child of Alexander Lane. She is a proven Lane per a death certificate of one of her children. I don’t know what proof she had that she was Alexander’s child, but it does fit, circumstantially. Sarah’s age varies from census to census, but if her 1880 entry is correct, age 55, she was born ca 1824/25 and fits in this spot fairly well. If her 1850 entry is right, age 28, she was born ca 1821/22 which puts her in the older spot, who is also unidentified. I’ve chose the ca 1825 entry because it’s closer to her ages on the other census records.

Sarah Lane married James R. Bailey before ca 1848 in Marion Dist., SC. He was born ca 1820/21 per his age on the 1850 census (29). His age varies from census to census, just like Sarah’s.

They are listed twice on the 1850 census, which is a rarity, but it’s clearly the same family both times. Their names are the same in both entries, but the ages are different. Their visitation dates are about two weeks apart, so they may have moved during that time and got visited twice, or just got duplicated somehow. In the second entry they appear to be in the section of Marion that later became Dillon County judging by their neighbors. In the first entry they are somewhere near Catfish Creek judging by their neighbors, including some of the Lanes.

I should note there was another James Bailey of similar age very close by, as well as two much older men of the same name. That could cause some confusion when looking at other non-census records.

They are on the 1860 census in Marion District next to widow Mary Christmas Calder who’d shortly marry Sarah’s brother John Osborne Lane.

I wasn’t able to find Sarah or James on the 1900 census. They may have died before then, perhaps in Darlington Co., SC, or maybe in Florence where some of their children were by 1900.

Sarah and James had at least five children per the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census records.

Joseph Lane was born ca 1827/28 per his age on the 1850 census (22) which agrees with his 1860 age (32). He was born in Marion Dist., SC. He was named by W. W. Sellers as one of Alexander’s sons. He made a statement in 1872 that he was a son of Alexander, so that proves it.

He was almost certainly named for his uncle Joseph Lane (c1770-aft 1850).

Joseph seems to be with his parents for the 1830 census aged 0-4 (1825/1830). However, there is only one son that age with them that year and there should be two. Joseph seems to be home in 1840, aged 10-14 (1825/1830). Though unmarried by 1850, he wasn’t home with his parents on that census, he was residing with Ashley Johnson as a hired laborer. “Ashley” was actually Asa Johnson, a brother of Elizabeth Johnson who married Benjamin Lane, Joseph’s likely brother. Otherwise there is no known connection between Joseph Lane and Asa Johnson. It occurred to me that Asa’s wife Hannah might be a Lane, but I haven’t been able to prove or disprove that.

Joseph Lane married Sarah Jane Jones before ca 1854, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. She was born ca 1831/32 per her age on the 1860 census (28). Her maiden name is proven by the death certificate of her daughter Anna Jane.

I found a potential match for her on the 1850 census. Thomas H. Jones and Arabella (—) Jones have a daughter named Sarah aged 19 (born ca 1830/31) which is pretty close. She was the only Sarah in Marion Dist., SC in 1850 who was close in age. The reason I’m not 100% sure it’s her, despite their being no other potential matches in Marion that year, is that her parents and some of her siblings moved to Scott Co., MS by 1860. Of course that doesn’t mean this is the wrong family.

Joseph and Sarah are listed on the 1860 census in Marion.

Sarah Jane Jones Lane died during the 1860s, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. I’ve arbitrarily chosen ca 1865 for her death date, coinciding with the birth of Lucinda Cynthia Lane, though it’s possible Lucinda is a child of the next marriage.

Joseph Lane married Joannah Blackman in the 1860's, perhaps ca 1866 (guess). She was born ca 1836/37 per her age on the 1850 census, a child of Stephen L. Blackman and Emily (—). Joseph and Joanna were 1st cousins once removed via the Lane connection, for Joannah was a great granddaughter of Osborne Lane who was Joseph’s grandfather. They may have been more closely related via the Blackmans though we don’t know enough about Joseph’s mothers’ family yet.

They are on the 1870 census in Marion County.

Joseph’s uncle James Lane died in 1872. In the estate there was apparently some question about a particular piece of land. Joseph made a statement that he was a son of Alexander Lane who once owned the said land and lost it due to debt, and that he was a nephew of James Lane.

Joseph Lane died on 18 Mar 1888 according to his probate records. His son J. P. Lane stated he died leaving a widow and ten children surviving him. Heirs who signed the division were:

           Widow Joanna Lane

           S. E. Lane

           J. W. Lane

           J. P. Lane

           Joaner Lane

           A. R. Lane

Jonsinthy Lane [probably says Lousinthy, but transcribed as Jonsinthy]

           Aney Jane Johnson

That is only seven children who signed, not ten.

(Marion Co., SC Probate Roll # 1862 from Marion County Probate Records Volume III, Lucille Utley and Danny Smith, Dec 1985.)

I didn’t find Joanna Blackman Lane on the 1900 census. She may have died between 1888 and 1900, or remarried.

W. W. Sellers had a little bit to say about Joseph Lane:

Joseph Lane, another son of old Alexander, married twice (don't know to whom), and had several sons; those known are Alexander, William and Elisha—there are, perhaps, other sons and daughters ; he died some years ago ; was an honest, hard-working man, a good soldier in the war.

Robert Lane was born ca 1828/29 per his age on the 1850 census (21), though his later census records make him a tad older, 43 in 1870 (ca 1826/27), and 52 in 1880 (ca 1827/28), all of which are close enough to each other. He was named by W. W. Sellers as one of Alexander’s sons. He was also home with his parents in 1850, so that’s further proof he’s their son.

He was almost certainly named for his uncle Robert Lane (c1780/84-c1835).

Robert seems to be with his parents for the 1830 census aged 0-4 (1825/1830). However, there is only one son that age with them that year and there should be two. Robert seems to be home in 1840, aged 10-14 (1825/1830). He is with his parents in 1850, aged 21, but he’s also listed again in another household, no known relation, as a hired labourer.

Robert Lane married Annis Rogers in the 1850s, before ca 1857. She was born ca 1839/40 per her age on the 1870 census (30), or ca 1829/30 per her age in 1850 (50). That’s a ten year difference. Sellers referred to her as Miss Rogers. Her maiden name is further proven by the death certificate of one of her children.

I found no Annis Rogers of any age on the 1850 census in Marion District. There were a few “Ann” Rogers listed though. Ann and Annis were often used interchangeably in those days. However, none of those appear to be the same person who married Robert Lane.

I was unable to locate Robert Lane on the 1860 census.

Robert Lane served as a Private in Company D, 25th Regiment of Infantry during the Civil War.

They were “back” in Marion for the 1870 census.

Annis Rogers Lane died on 25 Jul 1889 and is buried at Lane Cemetery # 2 in the Floydale area of Dillon Co., SC. Her tombstone is fairly new and lists her as “Annie wife of Robert Lane Died July 25, 1889 age about 55 years She was a kind and affectionate mother and a friend to all.”

There is no marker for Robert Lane. He seems to have died before the 1900 census since I didn’t find him listed on it. However, W. W. Sellers indicated he was still living when he included him in a list of Civil War soldiers. The book was published in 1901, but he finished it in 1898, I believe, so perhaps Robert was still alive as late as then, or at least Sellers didn’t know that he had passed when he wrote that.

This is what else Sellers had to say about Robert Lane, which wasn’t much:

Another son of old Alexander, Robert Lane, married a Miss Rogers, and has a family, about whom the writer knows nothing.

Robert and Annis had seven children per the various census records.

John Osborne Lane was born 7 Nov 1831 per his tombstone. 1831 does not work with his 1850 census age of 12 (c1837/38) or 1870 age 34 (c1835/36) or 1900 entry which gives his birth as Feb 1840. His 1880 entry shows him as 48 or ca 1831/32 which is the only one that matches his birth date on the tombstone. I think he was born between 1835 and 1840 which works with his parents 1840 census entry showing an apparent son, him, presumably, aged under 5 (1835/1840), which also works with all those other census entries. I don’t know where the date on the tombstone came from. However, since it’s literally carved in stone, I’ll keep it even knowing it’s probably off by at least 4 or 5 years.

He was obviously named in part for his grandfather Osborne Lane. The “John” might be for his uncle John Lane (1765/70-1850s) or perhaps someone on his mother’s side, or both.

He’s a proven child of Alexander by living with him in 1850*, and also named as a son by W. W. Sellers in his book.

* This doesn’t actually “prove” he is their son, but it strongly suggests it.

Osborne seems to be with his parents for the 1840 census, aged under 5 (born ca 1835/1840), and was with them in 1850, “John” age 12.

I wasn’t able to find him on the 1860 census. He may have been wherever brother Robert was, as he was also missing that year.

He apparently married someone during this period, but I don’t know who she was. She died before ca 1863.

John Osborne Lane married Mary Jane Christmas ca 1862/63 per their 1910 census entry, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. She was born 12 Nov 1834 per her tombstone. She is a child of Nathaniel Christmas and Catherine Turner. She was with them on the 1850 census, “Mary” age 18. She married a Mr. Calder before 1852 and had several children with him. He apparently died between ca 1857 and 1860 for in 1860 she was an apparent widow with several children. They were next to James R. Bailey whose wife was Sarah Lane, possibly a member of this same family.

Bethea Township was in the part of Marion County that was cut off in 1910 to form the new Dillon County. That’s where they were listed on the 1910 census, on Catfish Church Road.

Their 1910 census entry shows this marriage was the 2nd for both of them. It also shows that they’d been married 47 years, or ca 1862/63.

Mary Jane Christmas Lane died on 12 Feb 1917 in Dillon Co., SC. Her death certificate was mostly blank, no birth date and no parents listed. She was buried at Catfish Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Dillon Co., SC. She was 82 if her birth date is correct on her stone. Her death certificate listed her as 86 at death.

John Osborne Lane died on 6 Sep 1918 in Dillon Co., SC. I wasn’t able to find a death certificate for him, though one should have been filed. He is also buried at Catfish Creek Baptist Church.

Sellers had a little to say about Osborne:

Osborne Lane, another son of Alexander, married a Christmas, and lives near Mallory, on Little Reedy Creek ; he has several sons, the names of whom are unknown ; he is an honest, hard-working man and a good citizen.

Osborne and Mary Jane had six children together. She had three Calder children with her first husband. This makes nine total, though both her 1900 and 1910 census entries showed her with only 8 children total. One of those I’ve identified might not be hers.

Charlotte Lane was born 14 Jun 1833 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC. She seems to be with her parents for the 1840 census, aged 5-9 (1830/1835) and with them in 1850 as “Charlott” age 14.

Charlotte married Ebenezer Campbell ca 1851/52 in Marion Dist., SC. Ebenezer was born 29 Jul 1828 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist., SC a son of James Campbell (1780-1842) and Mary Barnes (c1792-1872).

Ebenezer and Charlotte are my 3rd Great Grandparents. I have written and published a book on their family titled A History of Campbell Families of Marion and Dillon Counties South Carolina. It is still available. The e-book version (PDF) is much cheaper than the printed version if you want to get a copy.

They are listed on the 1860 census next to his widowed mother.

Ebenezer Campbell served as a Private in Company C of Manigault’s Battalion of South Carolina Artillery for the Civil War (CSA). He enlisted 15 Apr 1862 at Marion Court House.

I’ve searched for them on the 1870 census many times and was never able to find them. Many families are missing from this census in Marion Co., SC, especially in Reeves Township where they were likely residing at that time.

They are on the 1880 census in Reaves Township two houses from Charlotte’s widowed sister-in-law Betsy Johnson Lane (widow of Benjamin Lane). For some reason Charlotte’s name was blank on the census. Perhaps the information was obtained from a neighbor or a younger child in the family who didn’t know her name.

Ebenezer Campbell died on 24 Aug 1907 and is buried at Zion next to Charlotte. They share a stone.

Sellers didn’t mention Charlotte in his Lane family writeup, but he did in the Campbell writeup:

Ebby Campbell married Charlotte Lane, and has six children - three sons, Spencer, George and another, name unknown; one daughter married Leonard Lewis, and has a family (small); another daughter married some one unknown; think the other daughter is single.

The single daughter he referenced was Florence Campbell (1872-1960) who outlived everyone else in the family. My mother remembered her quite well. Florence was her great aunt.

Sellers mentioned only six children but there were at least nine.

Stephen S. Lane was born 7 Oct 1839, per his tombstone, in Marion Dist., SC. He was likely named for his uncle Stephen C. Lane (c1794-1840s). I don’t know what his “S” initial stood for.

He was apparently with his folks for the 1840 census, aged under 5 (1835/1840), and home with them in 1850, “Stephen” age 10.

Stephen Lane married Quincy Lee Hussey ca 1855/56 per their 1900 census entry, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. Quincy, alias Linsey, was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist., SC, a child of Robert Hussey and Cynthia Lee.

I could not find them on the 1860 census. I did find a Stephen Lane all the way in Webster Co., GA residing with Theophilus Turner (c1814-aft 1880) who was also from Marion Dist., SC, but not related as far as I’m aware. This could be our Stephen Lane, but if so, where were his new wife and young children? We don’t know the maiden name of Theophilus’s wife Martha (b ca 1814), so it’s possible she was a Lane or somehow related to Stephen Lane. Then again, this census lists her as born in NC so maybe she isn’t a Lane. Theophilus Turner and Linsey Hussey were 1st cousins once removed, so that could explain Stephen living with them.

The 1860 entry in Georgia is questionable as to which Stephen Lane that is. I’d say there’s only a 30% chance it’s the same Stephen. Likewise, I was unable to locate Stephen Lane on the 1870 census anywhere. Missing in two consecutive censuses isn’t very helpful for researching this family.

On 8 Jul 1862, for the Civil War, Stephen S. Lane enlisted in Company B of the 2nd Battalion of North Carolina Artillery in Cumberland Co., NC. Some of the Husseys lived in that area, so that may be where he was residing at the time as well. He was discharged due to disability. According to his obituary he lost an arm during the war.

As noted above, I couldn’t find them on the 1870 census. Perhaps not coincidentally, I couldn’t find his likely sister Sarah Lane Bailey on that census either, and they were neighbors in 1880.

They are in Darlington Co., SC for the 1880 census two houses from James R. Bailey and wife Sarah Lane, Stephen’s likely sister. The page was very dim and hard to read. There is a George W. Lane 22 (c1858) next door. That is probably their son. I also searched for him in 1860 and 1870 but with no luck.

Stephen was on the 1910 census in neighboring Florence Co., SC, but his wife wasn’t with him for some reason. He was listed as married. He had a grandson residing with him. Linsey was in the same township, but not nearby, with one of their sons. She was listed as widowed! They must have had some falling out.

Stephen S. Lane died on 9 Mar 1912 at home in Florence Co., SC in a very tragic manner. His obituary, included with his entry at Findagrave.com, states that he was home alone while suffering from rheumatism. He was sitting near the fire rubbing liniment on his legs which ignited, burning him so badly that he died.

The same obituary says that his wife “died some time ago” which isn’t true at all.

The obituary also says he lost an arm during the war (Civil War).

Linsey is listed on the 1920 census.

Quincy “Linsey” Lee Hussey Lane died on 16 Sep 1929 in Cartersville, Florence Co., SC, aged 88 per a birth date of Dec 1840 (per 1900 census entry) or 87 per her obituary. She is buried beside her husband at Cartersville Cemetery.

Her tombstone has her maiden name listed as “Hursey” but the surname is usually spelled Hussey.

They had 11 children per her 1900 census entry, 9 of which were still living at that time. I’ve only identified 9 of those children. The other two must have died young, between censuses.

Sellers had a little to say about them.

Another son of Alexander married a Miss Hensey, and has several sons—has removed to Florence County, and it is said is well to do.

That is referring to Stephen. Sellers too got Linsey’s surname wrong.

Leonard Lemuel Lane was born ca 1841/42 per his age on the 1850 census (8). I don’t know who, if anyone, he might have been named for. He was the first Leonard and Lemuel in the Lane family as far as I’m aware.

He was with his parents for the 1850 census, “Leonard” age 8. In 1860, he was with his widowed mother as “Leonard” age 19.

On 1 Aug 1861 he enlisted as a Private in Company F of Gregg’s First Regiment for the Civil War as “Lemuel Lane.” Sellers reported that he died in Apr 1864 (in the back of the book with the Civil War soldier rosters), but that appears to be wrong for his death is reported in a newspaper article dated 22 Oct 1861:

Inquest - The following is a corrected report of the inquest reported in yesterday’s issue:

Coroner Whiting held an inquest on Saturday night, at Secessionville, on the body of Leonard L. Lane, a native of Marion District, a member of the “Marion Blues,” who came to his death by the accidental discharge of a musket in the hands of John Coffey, a member of the Johnson Rifles. Verdict of the Jury – “Death from the accidental discharge of a musket.”

The Charleston Mercury, Tuesday Oct 22, 1861, page 2 (Newspapers.com)

Sellers said this about Leonard:

Another son of old Alexander, Leonard, was killed in the war. They were all good soldiers in the Confederate war.
