Samuel Pack and wife Jean are my six times great grandparents.

Samuel Pack was born ca 1742/1752, assuming he was at least 18 when son John Pack (1760/1770) was born. He could be much older than that of course.

I don’t know where Samuel was born. The only record I have of him thus far is in Spartanburg Co., SC. I doubt he was born there. He probably migrated to that region from somewhere else.

Samuel’s wife is named Jean. I don’t know her maiden name, nor when or where she was born.

There was a Samuel Pack in Rowan Co., NC in 1772 when he was brought into court. Thomas Pack and Alexander Clark were his securities. I don’t know if this is the same Samuel or not.

In Rowan Co., NC Court on 5 May 1772 a bond was recorded. Edmund Cullin of Fredrick Co., VA made a bond with Samuel Pack of the same place for 100 pounds Virginia money dated 23 Jan 1763 to be paid if he fails to deed Samuel Pack a parcel of land on Sleepy Creek “given by Will to said Cullen of Joseph Pack by said Samuel Pack.” The bond was witnessed by John Hall and Thomas Pack, the latter of whom proved it Thomas Pack.

The above is a very useful document it it happens to be our Samuel Pack. This shows him in Rowan Co., NC in 1772, but in Frederick Co., VA in 1763. I did see records in that section of Virginia for a Samuel Pack. Is he ours though?

Our Samuel Pack moved to South Carolina before 1784 into what had been Craven Co., SC, but became Ninety Six District in 1769. This same region became Pinkney District in 1791, then Spartanburg District in 1785.

The 1787 deed (see below) indicates that Samuel and Jean Pack purchased land from Elisha Thompson and his wife Rachel sometime between 1768 and 1787. A 1784 survey shows that they already had this land by then. On 13 Sep 1784, a tract of 270 acres was surveyed for Daniel Monroe in Ninety Six District on the branches of the North Fork of Tyger River. The land bordered Thomas Davis and Samuel Packs (sic).

Samuel Pack died before late 1787 in Spartanburg Dist., SC.

On 15 Dec 1787, John Pack, lawful heir of Samuel Pack, deceased, and Jean Pack, his mother, deeded land to Thomas Davis, being 200 acres originally granted to Elisha Thomson 9 Apr 1768 then in Craven Co., SC, now Spartanburg Co., SC. Described as on the main north branch of the north fork of Tyger River joining David Davis. The same land deeded by Elisha Thomson and wife Rachel to Samuel and Jean Pack. John Pack and Jean Pack both signed the deed. Witnesses were Nevil Wayland, Rowland Burks, William Barton. (Spartanburg Co., SC Deed Book B, pp. 216-217.)

I didn’t find Jean Pack on the 1790 census. Her son John and potential daughter Elizabeth were in Lincoln Co., NC then. Perhaps she was in that county as well.

I have no other information on her.

Children

A 1787 deed proves that Samuel and Jean were parents of John Pack. Since he was the only one named, he may have been the only heir. It’s also possible he was the oldest son, but not only heir, or the only one still residing at home, thus the only one listed. I have a few other Packs who were near John that could be his siblings. If not his siblings, they are somehow closely related.

1. John Pack (1760/1770-1840s) m 1) Unknown, m 2) Sarah Ellison.

2. Elizabeth “Betsy” Pack (1755/65-aft 1820) m Peter Rhodes 1785 in Lincoln Co., NC. Was near John Pack there in 1790.

3. Benjamin Pack (1765/1774-aft 1810) was in Rutherford Co., NC when John Pack was there.

4. Elisha Pack (bef 1774-aft 1790) was in Burke Co., NC. I have nothing directly linking him to John, but Burke bordered Rutherford and Lincoln at the time he was there.
