Edward Scarborough and Ann (—) are 8 times Great Grandparents.

Edward Scarborough was born before 1671, based on him being listed as a poll on a 1687 tax list. Polls were usually males over 16, or over 21 in some cases. I’ve chosen ca 1670 arbitrarily. He could be a little older than that.

Edward is a son of William Scarborough (d 1676) and Amy. This is proven by Edward being in the household of his mother’s 3rd husband Thomas Tias in 1687-1690 on the tax lists.

He was born in Surry Co., VA.

Edward’s father, William Scarborough was executed by Gov. Berkeley in 1676 for his part in Bacon’s Rebellion. Edward was a small child then. His mother, Amy, married Thomas Tias shortly afterward.

Edward Scarborough, along with his half brother Walter Holdsworth, were listed with Thomas Tyas on the 1687 tax list in Surry Co., VA.

Edward was also listed with Thomas in 1688, 1689 and 1690.

Edward Scarborough married ca 1690/91 in Surry Co., VA, to Ann, maiden name unknown.

Edward is listed on the 1691 and 1692 Surry Co., VA tax lists. He was on the 1694 list also. His brother William was with him.

Edward was listed on the 1695, 1696, 1698 and 1699 tax lists in Surry.

He was listed on the 1700 Surry tax list. Robert Partin was with him. I don’t know whether that is a relative or a hired laborer.

Edward is on the 1701, 1702 and 1703 tax lists in Surry.

Edward is listed on the 1704 Virginia Quit Rent list with 150 acres in Surry Co., VA.

Edward Scarborough was dead by 20 Feb 1716/17 for on that date Daniel Duggard (Dugger) and wife Mary, next of kin to Edward Scarborow, deceased, came into court and made oath that he had died without leaving a Will. (Surry Co., VA Court Orders 1713-1718 p 105.)

In Mar 1716/17 court, Daniel Duggard, administrator of Edward, presented an inventory and appraisal of the estate in court. (Surry Co., VA Court Orders 1713-1718 p. 109.)

On 17 Feb 1719, the estate of Edward Scarbrow, deceased paid out to Grace Lucas and “daughter Duggard.” (Surry Co., VA Deeds, Wills, etc 1715-1730 p. 353.)

I don’t know when Ann, wife of Edward Scarborough died, whether before, or after him.

Children

Edward Scarborough and Ann had several children as proven by various records.

1.         Mary Scarborough (1695-1783), wife of Daniel Dugger, as named in court and estate records. Those are my ancestors.

2.         Edward Scarborough (Jr). Orphan Edward Scarborough chose Richard Lewis as his guardian in Surry Co., VA court in 1718. That record doesn’t say he’s an orphan of Edward (Sr), but since Edward (Sr) died around that time, it certainly makes sense for this Edward to be his son. (Surry Co., VA Court Order Book 1713-1718 p. 110.)

3.         Elizabeth Scarborough. In 1718 court, Thomas Collier sued Daniel Duggard. It was ordered that Collier take into his care and tuition Elizabeth and Benjamin Scarbrow, orphans of Edward Scarbrough. (Surry Co., VA Court Order Book 1713-1718 p. 148.)

4.         Benjamin Scarborough. Same proof as Elizabeth.

5.         William Scarborough (d 1736). I don’t know what proof there is that William is a son of Edward. He fits age-wise. He did name one of his sons Edward.

There was a Grace Lucas named in one of the estate records as having been paid from the estate. That could be a daughter, or it could be someone to whom the estate was indebted and not necessarily a relative.
