Welcome to my Smith genealogy pages. Smith is the number one most common surname in the United States, thus my interest in this surname is limited to those in Halifax and Martin Co., NC in the 1700s.

I have other Smith lines not connected to these Smiths.

My most recent Smith ancestor is my 5 times great grandmother Patience Smith, born ca 1730s, presumably in North Carolina. She married John Turner, a “mulatto” slave ca 1760 in Halifax (now Martin) Co., NC. She purchased John’s freedom from his master (and father) in 1765 and they immediately moved to what later became Marion Dist., SC. Patience, according to court records, “passed” as white, and her mother was white, of Irish ancestry, and that Patience herself was “not more” than a quarter black. Records also reveal the name of her mother, but not her father.

Rachel Smith was born in the 1710s (rough estimate based on Patience’s birth of ca 1730s, also a rough estimate). All I know of her thus far is her name and that she was of Irish ancestry. I’m assuming she lived in the Halifax (now Martin) County region. I don’t know who her husband was, nor her parents. Much research is needed.
