Welcome to my Campbell genealogy pages. I am interested in the Campbell surname in Marion Co., SC and that general area.

Campbell was the 43^rd most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 47^th.

My most recent Campbell ancestor is my mother, thus through her I claim to be “Half Scottish.” My dad, being a Grant, also gives me another claim to being “Half Scottish,” thus can I claim to be 100% Scots? Not really, but it’s fun to say that.

My mother’s father was Alva Gabriel Campbell (1916-1980). He was named for his two grandfathers, Spencer Alva Campbell and Gabriel Edwards. Alva was a World War II Veteran serving in the US Army. He married Gertrude Turner in Marion Co., SC. She died in 1973. He married a 2^nd time to Daisy Bell Cooper (1921-2008), widow of Liston M. Huggins (1918-1973). Alva and Gertrude are buried at Devotion Gardens Cemetery, east of Marion on the way to Mullins. Alva is a son of Willie S. Campbell.

Willie Spencer Campbell (1880-1935) married Henrietta Edwards in neighboring Horry Co., SC in 1910. They lived in or near Marion the rest of their lives. He died in 1935, Henrietta in 1963. They are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Willie is a son Spencer A. Campbell.

Spencer Alva Campbell (1852-1928) married Celia Ann Johnson ca 1875 in Marion Co., SC. They are buried at the Smithy Cemetery in graves marked simply as “Grandpa Campbell 1852-1928” and “Grandma Campbell 1854-1937.” Spencer is a son of Ebenezer Campbell, while Celia is a daughter of Ara Campbell Johnson (Spencer and Celia were 1^st cousins).

Ebenezer Campbell (1828-1907) married Charlotte Lane ca 1851 in Marion Dist., SC. She is a daughter of Alexander Lane. Ebenezer and Charlotte are buried at Zion Cemetery in Marion Co., SC. Ebenezer is a son of James Campbell.

Ara Campbell (1819-1896) sister of Ebenezer, and mother of Celia Ann Johnson, married Carey Johnson in the early 1840s. They are buried at Zion Cemetery. Ara is a daughter of James Campbell.

James Campbell (1780-1842) married Mary Barnes (no actual proof of her maiden name has been found) ca 1815 in Marion Dist., SC. They resided north of Mullins. They are buried at the Campbell Cemetery in unmarked graves. James is a son of John Campbell.

John Campbell (1752-c1808) married Ann Cribb ca 1774 in what later became Marion Co., SC, but was then still part of Georgetown District, SC. John was born in Scotland according to his grandson Rev. Simeon Campbell. We don’t know where in Scotland though. Ann Cribb’s family had been in the area two or three generations by the time she married John. John’s parents are not known. John and Ann are buried at the Campbell Cemetery in unmarked graves.
