The author (Marty Grant) is a 7th Great Grandson of John George and Mary
Jordan. Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here. John George was born 18 Aug 1704 [per the John Brown Family Bible] in Middlesex County, Virginia. He was probably named for his father's brother John George of Isle of Wight County. John is a proven child of Robert George and Sarah of Middlesex Co, VA. His baptism was performed 3 Sep1704, and he was named as a son of Robert and Sarah in that record. Interestingly, the baptism was listed again on 24 Sep 1704. One of the two must be a clerical error or else he was baptized twice for some reason. (Christ Church Parish Register). John George married Mary Jordan prior to 1727, probably by 1724 at least. No actual marriage record was found, so they probably didn't marry in Middlesex Co, VA, since the marriage records are fairly complete for that period in the Christ Church Parish records. I'd imagine they married in Essex County instead. Mary Jordan's parentage is unknown. Several researchers think she is the daughter of Joshua Jordan (1681-1718) and Elizabeth Sanborne (c1683-after 1721) of Isle of Wight Co, VA. Joshua and Elizabeth did have a daughter named Mary Jordan, born ca 1704 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. She was named in Joshua Jordan's Will dated 28 Feb 1717 as daughter "Mary". I quite confidant that they are not one and the same Mary Jordan. (Isle of Wight Co, VA Wills and Deeds Book 2 page 637). The information connecting John George’s wife Mary Jordan with the one in Isle of Wight is from an book published in 1967. See my commentary page for numerous problems with that article. That is the earliest (1967) I've seen concluding that Mary Jordan of Isle of Wight is the same Mary Jordan who married John George. Does anyone have any other proof? I have no doubt her name was Jordan, but the rest is highly questionable (without additional proof), in fact, that entire article was very poorly researched and contained numerous errors. John George's wife Mary was certainly a Jordan, though no primary evidence for that has been found. This info was carried down in family tradition, and the earliest known documentation of it was in the W. O. George (1811-1869) "George Family" History written in 1860. He didn't list Mary's parents, but he said her father probably owned Ellets at one point. (This is a community in King William County.) The birth (17 Nov 1727), baptism (18 Nov 1727), and death and burial (19 Nov 1727) of their son Robert George was recorded in Christ Church records. The above was the only record found for John and Mary in Middlesex Co, VA, and it gives both their names. (Christ Church Parish Register). John George was listed on 18 Jun 1724 in Essex Co, VA Court records. On 18 Nov 1729, Robert George Sr of Middlesex Co, VA gave his son (so named in the deed) John George of Essex Co, VA, 270 acres in Essex Co, VA. (Essex Co, VA Deed book 19 page 66). John George apparently lived in Essex Co, VA from ca 1724 until 1735, though he appeared in Caroline Co, VA records by 1734. Since Caroline bordered Essex (and was formed from part of Essex), his land may have been near the border. John George was named in the Will of his father Robert George written in 1733 in Middlesex. He was also one of the Executors of the Will. On 9 May 1734, John George was listed in Caroline Co, VA Court when William and Mary Dillen acknowledge a deed to John George. This doesn't mean that John lived there then, but had purchased land there by then. Caroline Co, VA Deeds were lost, so the court orders regarding these early deeds are all we have. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1732-1740 pg 140). On 21 Feb 1735 John George "of Essex" sold 373 acres of land in Essex Co, VA to Francis Smith. This is probably when John moved to Caroline Co, VA. (Essex Co, VA Deed book 20page 156). On 13 Jun 1735 Robert George acknowledged his deed of land to John George. This probably is the land John lived on. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1732-1740 pg 297). John George's name appears in the Caroline Co, VA Order books many times over the next several decades, often on Juries, and as witnesses to deeds or wills. Quite often his name was on the same records with his brothers Robert George and Richard George, his brother-in-law Robert Williamson, and his nephew Robert Mickleborough. John Dudley often appears on the same records as well. He may be the father of Ursula Dudley, John George's 2nd wife. There are too many of these records to list them all here, but they all appear in my book. Mary Jordan George, the first wife of John George died sometime, no exact date is know. It is thought prior to ca 1758. Around that time John George married Ursula Dudley. Ursula was born 20 Sep 1720 [per John Brown family Bible.] According to W. O. George (1811-1869), Ursula Dudley was a daughter of John Dudley and Ursula Beverly as proven by the estate records of John Dudley (probably now lost due to the destruction of many Caroline County records.) Ursula and John apparently had marital difficulties for they separated in 1777 and never reconciled. They didn't divorce, but she sued for separate maintenance and won. John George made his Will on 7 Feb 1784. This Will was thought destroyed with many of the other Caroline records. For years the only the only reference to this Will was the summary made by W. O. George around 1860. However I recently found a complete copy of the Will in the Fredericksburg District Court records. In the Will he names his son Reuben George; son John George; son James George; daughter Ann Woolfolk and he mentions Robert Woolfolk (her husband, though that relationship is not stated); daughter Elizabeth Baber; grandchildren Mary Isbell, Daniel Isbell, Nancy Isbell, John G. Graves, Benjamin Graves and Frances Graves. He also mentions their mother, though doesn’t give her name, and mentions Beverly Graves (who is his son-in-law, though that relationship was not stated in the Will); daughter Sarah George; daughter Mary Mackhaney (McHaney); and daughter Catey Brown (Catherine Brown). Son Reuben George is made sole executor. Witnesses were James Yarbrough, Gilly Yarbrough, and William Brown. He signed the Will as “John George Senr” and the Will was proven in Caroline County Court in May 1784. John George died between 7 Feb 1784 and 22 Apr 1784 for on that latter date his son Reuben George wrote a letter to brother-in-law Cornelius McHaney informing him of the death of John George Sr. According to W. O. George, Ursula Dudley George died around 1799. I have found no other source for that date so far. |

Children of John George. John George left
a Will naming his children, though he did not name them all. He had
already given an inheritance to some of them previous to the Will. The
children in rough chronological order: John (proven by Will-1784),
Robert George (proven by Christ Church Parish Records), Ann George
Woolfolk (Will-1784), Reuben George (Will-1784), James George
(Will-1784), Elizabeth George Baber (Will-1784), Sarah George
(Will-1784), Mary George McHaney (Will-1784), Frances George Isbell
Graves (Will and other sources), Edna George DeJarnatt (not named in
Will, though proven by old letter, though it is questionable). By the
second marriage John George had: John Dudley George (not named in Will,
but proven by other sources), Catherine George Brown (Will-1784), Martha

John George (Jr) was
born ca 1725 in Essex Co, VA. He was named in the Will of John George
(1784). Letters were also found from him to his father John George of
Caroline Co, VA. He moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA ca 1770 and owned land
on Allen's Creek, in both Halifax and Pittsylvania County close to his
brother James George.
John George married Frances "Fanny" ---, possibly in Caroline Co, VA, or perhaps in Pittsylvania or Halifax Co, VA, before ca 1764. In 1790, John and family moved to Greene Co, GA where he died the same year. See his own page for additional information. |

Reuben George
was born ca 1730 in Essex Co, VA. He was named in the Will of
his father John George (1784). Letters were found addressed to him from
his brother's James and John George of Pittsylvania Co, VA.
Reuben George married Mildred Rogers ca 1756 in Caroline Co, VA. There is a lot of confusion among modern researchers concerning Reuben's family. The problem is that there were three or four contemporary men named Reuben George in Virginia at the same time, however, in our case, the family is well documented. James George
was born ca 1734 in Caroline Co, VA. He was named in the Will
of his father John George (1784). Letters were found from him to his
brother Reuben of Caroline Co, VA and he was mentioned in a letter of
his sister Mary to their father John George. He moved to Pittsylvania
Co, VA ca 1767.
James George married Elizabeth Noden ca 1759 in Caroline Co, VA. There is some confusion about the identity of this James George. There was a book published several years ago that identified James George of Goochland Co, VA (married to Agatha Watts) as the child of John George and Mary Jordan, however, that claim was in error. There is ample evidence showing that James George of Pittsylvania Co, VA is the son of John and Mary. See his own page for additional information. |
| Elizabeth George was born in Caroline Co, VA. She was named in the Will of her father John George (1784) as "Elizabeth, wife of James Baber". They remained in Caroline County where both died in the very early 1800's. |

Sarah George
was born in Caroline Co, VA. She was named in the Will of her
father John George (1784) as "Sarah George". The fact that he listed her
as "George" might indicate she was still single then, or had married
another George.
Very little is known about her. W. O. George said she was the one who married James Isbell, but other records seem to refute that. Sally (nickname for Sarah) was mentioned in 1783 letter of Mary George McHaney of Halifax Co, VA to her father John George of Caroline. She stated that her sister Sally wasn't doing too well. This suggests Sarah moved to Halifax Co, VA, before 1783. I am about 75% sure that Sarah George married her 1st cousin Jonadab George, son of Richard George. The evidence isn’t conclusive, but there are several items of circumstantial evidence that points in this direction. Some claim this Sarah George (named in their records as "Sarah Elizabeth George") was the wife of Edward Douglas of Chatham Co, NC and later Sumner Co, TN. That is certainly incorrect. This is based on "Southern Historical Families, Vol. XI" Edited by Mrs. John Bennett Boddie, 1967. See my commentary page for numerous problems with that article. | Ann George was born in Caroline Co, VA. She was named in the Will of her father John George (1784) as "Ann, wife of Robert Woolfolk". This family remained in Caroline Co, VA. Ann died in the late 1780's, and Robert died ca 1791. |

Mary George
was born in Caroline Co, VA. She was named in the Will of her
father John George (1784) as Mary McHany. Her husband's name wasn't
given there, but it is Cornelius McHaney of Halifax Co, VA. Mary wrote
several letters from there to her father and siblings. Court records
also prove he was her spouse. Mary had been previously married to John Dudley. She had no children with Mr. McHaney but she may have had some with Mr. Dudley, but I have no evidence of that yet. |

Frances George
was born in Caroline Co, VA. I have found no record directly
proving that this was the name of John George's daughter, but in his
Will he named grandchildren Mary Isbell, Daniel Isbell, Nancy Isbell,
John G. Graves, Benjamin Graves and Frances Graves and referred to
"their mother" though didn't give her name. That does tell us that it
was one woman who was mother to all six children, so married twice. Other records show that her first husband was James Isbell, and that her second husband was Beverly Graves. |

Edna George
was born ca 1741 in Caroline Co, VA. She married James
Pemberton Dejarnatt ca 1761 in Caroline. They soon moved to Halifax
Co, VA where she died before 1778.
An old family letter (written in 1888, over 100 years after Edna's death), says that she was a child of John George of Caroline County, Virginia. There was more than one John George in Caroline, so perhaps it was a different John, but Edna's husband was associated with John and James George (sons of John Sr) in Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, so that does suggest a close connection. |

John Dudley
George was born ca 1758
in Caroline Co, VA. He died 1781 during the Revolutionary War at
Williamsburg, VA. He married Lucy Dickinson and had at least one child, Lewis born 1779. I've always found it odd that John George Sr would have two sons named John, but this younger one probably went by the name Dudley for he appears that way on some records. |
| Catherine George is a proven daughter of John George. She was mentioned in his Will (1784) as his daughter "Caty Brown". She married William Brown in Caroline Co, VA. |
| Martha "Patsy" George is a proven daughter of John George and Ursula Dudley. She wasn't named in his Will for some reason, but in the 1779 letter from Ursula to her husband John, she mentioned "our daughter Patty". She married John Brown in Caroline Co, VA. Martha's Family Bible has the names and birth dates of John George and Ursula Dudley as well as other family members. |
