[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am 7th Great Grandnephew of Richard George.

Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here.

Richard George was born ca May 1709 in Middlesex Co, VA. He is a proven child of Robert George and Sarah of Middlesex Co, VA. His birth date was not recorded in the Christ Church Parish register, but he was Christened on 29 May 1709, so that was probably within a few days or weeks of his birth. (Christ Church Parish Register).

Robert George Sr wrote his will, probably in late 1733 (the will is in bad shape). It was proven 5 Mar 1733/34 in Middlesex Co, VA. The Will is torn, but Thomas R. George in his excellent book "The George Family Record", transcribed the will, and filled in the blanks as best he could. The Will names his son John George; Richard George; Sarah the wife of Churchill Blakey; (Elizabeth) wife of Robert Williamson; (Susanna) wife of John Thompson; grandson Robert Mickleborough; grandson Richard Thilman; granddaughter Sarah Thilman; grandson John Thilman; grandson Paul Thilman; daughter Catherine McTyre; son Robert George. Sons John George and Richard George were named as Executors. The will was witnessed by Richard Greenwood, George Blakey and Elizabeth McTyre. ("The George Family Record", Thomas R. George, 1978).

Richard George married Elizabeth Mayo on 20 Apr 1734 in Middlesex Co, VA. (Christ Church Parish Register)

Richard and family moved to Caroline Co, VA by 1737.

On 14 Apr 1737, in Caroline Court, Anne George, wife of Richard relinquished her dower rights to land her husband Richard conveyed to Ambrose Madison, now deceased, who conveyed it to George Penn. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1732-1740 page 475)

The above record would seem to show Elizabeth's name to be Elizabeth Ann Mayo, though most records list her only as "Elizabeth".

On 9 Dec 1737, in Caroline Court, Spencer Bobo, Jane Bobo and Thomas White, acknowledged a deed from them to to Richard George. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1732-1740 page 462)

On 11 May 1739, in Caroline Court, Richard George was listed as a member of the jury. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1732-1740 page 536)

On 14 Nov 1740, in Caroline Court, Elizabeth Goodwin, on petition, was granted letters of administration for her deceased husband George Goodwin, and she, along with Robert George and Richard George, as her securities, acknowledged their bond. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 17)

On 9 Oct (or November) 1741, in Caroline court, Richard George was listed on the jury. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 76)

On 10 Jun 1743, Richard George (and others) were ordered to view the road from the Church is to built into the old road that leads over the Reedy Mill. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 191)

On 12 Aug 1743 Richard George was appointed overseer of the road from Reedy Mill to the Church, and from thence to Chesterfield Road and it was ordered that Robert George, William Whitlock, John Dudley and Peter Clabrook with their gang, assist in clearing the road. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 212)

On 14 Oct 1743 Richard George was appointed overseer of the road from Dealy Mill to the Church, with Robert George and others to assist in clearing it. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 231)

On 9 Jun 1744, in Caroline court, Richard George was listed on the jury. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 285 and 287)

On 14 Dec 1744 Richard George and John Dudley were securities for Henry Burke to renew his ordinary license. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 337)

On 8 Mar 1744/45 in Caroline court, Prudence Lynch was ordered to pay Richard George 175 pounds of tobacco for 7 days of attendance for her against Woodford. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 354)

On 13 Sep 1745, John Goodwin acknowledged a deed to Richard George. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1740-1746 page 524)

On 13 Mar 1745/46, John Dudley, John George and Richard George, were ordered to clear a road between Chesterfield road to the new church. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1746-1754 page 23)

On 9 Oct 1747, in Caroline court, Richard George and Ann, his wife, acknowledged their deed to Benjamin Hubbard, gentleman. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1746-1754 page 71)

On 12 Oct 1752, in Caroline court, the Last Will of Richard Thilman was presented in court by William Eubank, executor, and was proven by Richard George and John Eubanks, witnesses. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1746-1754 page 350)

There were more records for Richard George in Caroline Co, VA, but I don't have them available right now.

Richard George died ca May 1773 in Caroline Co, VA. He left a Will naming 10 children.

I'll do some more "digging" on this family when I'm able.

Children

Richard and Elizabeth Ann George had 10 proven children, all named in his Will.

Ann George (1735)

Susannah George (1736)

Robert George

James Mayo George

Jonadab George

Henry George

Sarah George

Elizabeth George

Catherine George

Jane George

Ann George was born 18 Mar 1735 in Middlesex Co, VA, and baptized 20 Apr 1735 at Christ Church. Both records show her as child of Richard and Elizabeth George. (Christ Church Parish Register).

Ann George married Reverend Henry Gaines prior to ca 1756, in Caroline Co, VA.

They later moved to Pendleton District, SC where Ann died ca 1801, and Henry in 1830, though by then it was Pickens District, SC.

Susannah George was born 28 Oct 1736 in Middlesex Co, VA, and baptized 14 Nov 1736 at Christ Church. Both records show her as child of Richard and Elizabeth George. (Christ Church Parish Register).

Susannah George married a Mr. Fletcher. I have no additional data as of yet.

Robert George was born in Caroline Co, VA, probably after 1737. I have little data on him, except that he married Mary --- and that he died in 1774 in Caroline Co, VA. More research is needed.

James Mayo George was born in Caroline Co, VA, probably after 1737.

James never married apparently, or if he did, his wife died before him, and without issue. James Mayo George moved to Halifax Co, VA with his brother Jonadab George

I have not yet done extensive research in Halifax Co, VA, so I'm not sure what records James left there. He made his Will there on 27 Jan 1827 naming his brother Jonadab and a nephew Jonadab, but no wife or children. More research is needed.

Jonadab George was born in Caroline Co, VA, probably after 1737, but before ca 1746.

Jonadab George married someone (unknown) in Caroline Co, VA, ca 1760, then soon moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA - Halifax Co, VA border area on Allens Creek, where his cousins James George and John George lived.

Jonadab George was listed on the 1767 tax list in Pittsylvania Co, VA in the list of Thomas Dillard Jr.

On 26 Feb 1768, David Caldwell brought a petition against Jonadab George. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 38).

Jonadab George was listed on the 1770 tax list in Pittsylvania Co, VA and taxed for 1 white poll (himself) and 5 blacks, but no land.

On 31 Aug 1770, in Pittsylvania court, Jonadab George sued Edmund King for trespassing. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 242).

On 4 Dec 1775 Jonadab George (and Benjamin Lankford and Nathaniel Pope) witnessed a deed between John George of Caroline Co, VA (his Uncle) to James George of Pittsylvania Co, VA (his 1st cousin). The land was on Allens Creek. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 179).

Around this time (ca 1775-1778), Jonadab George moved to neighboring Halifax Co, VA.

On 1 Jan 1778 Jonadab George "of Halifax Co, VA" purchased 100 acres in Halifax from Thomas East. The land was on both sides of Buffalo Creek and Black Swamp. (Halifax Co, VA Deed Book 10 page 359).

Jonadab George was listed on the 1782 tax list in Halifax Co, VA, and listed with 6 whites (though not named, this would be himself, his wife, and 4 children) and 3 blacks.

Jonadab George was listed on the 1785 tax list in Halifax Co, VA, and listed with 7 whites (though not named, this would be himself, his wife, and 4 children and possibly one more child), he had 1 house, and 6 other buildings.

Jonadab George was listed on the 1787 census in Halifax Co, VA. He had one male over 21 (himself), one male age 16-21 (probably son Richard), one black age 16 and up, 4 blacks 15 and under, 5 horses, and 6 cattle.

On 10 Dec 1788, John Ballenger of Pittsylvania Co, VA sold property to Jonadab George "of Halifax Co, VA", being 263 acres on Strait Stone Creek bounded by Jesse Hoges, William Bedenton, John Buckey, John Ballenger, and Jonadab George. Witnesses were: John George (his cousin), Cornelius McHaney (cousin-in-law), Richard Craddock and Richard George (his son). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 412).

Jonadab George was probably listed on the 1790 census in Halifax Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for the entire state of Virginia.

On 4 Oct 1796, Jonadab George of Halifax, sold 8 acres in Pittsylvania to Jesse Hodges, land on Camp Branch. Witnesses were: Jordan George (his son), George Maddox,  John Ballenger, Benjamin Ballenger, and John Lester. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 11 page 47).

Jonadab George was probably listed on the 1800 census in Halifax Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for the entire state of Virginia.

On 12 Oct 1808, a marriage bond was filed in Halifax Co, VA for Robert Whitlock to marry Elizabeth George (granddaughter of Jonadab). The bondsman was Jonadab George, though I'm not sure if it was her grandfather, or her brother. Jonadab also witnessed the bond, as did Richard George. Jordan George, father of Elizabeth signed his consent.

Jonadab George was probably listed on the 1810 census in Halifax Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for a large portion of Virginia, including Halifax County.

Jonadab George made his Will on 27 Nov 1815 in Halifax Co, VA. I do not presently have a transcript of this Will.

Henry George was born in Caroline Co, VA. I have no additional data on Henry George at this time.

Sarah George was born in Caroline Co, VA. Sarah married a Mr. Gains. I have no additional data on her at this time.

Elizabeth George was born in Caroline Co, VA. I have no additional data on her at this time.

Catherine George was born in Caroline Co, VA. She married a Mr. Southworth. I have no additional data on her at this time.

Jane George was born in Caroline Co, VA. I have no additional data on her at this time.
