[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am 7th Great Grandnephew of Robert George.
Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here.
Robert George (Jr) was born ca 1697 in Middlesex Co, VA. He is a proven child of Robert George and Sarah of Middlesex Co, VA. I base his birth (ca 1697) on his first public record (1718) assuming he was at least 21 by then.
Robert George married Ann (Allen) Nash on 28 Jul 1718 in Middlesex Co, VA. (Christ Church Parish Register).
Ann Allen Nash was the widow of Arthur Nash. Arthur Nash was born 16 Nov 1696 in Middlesex Co, VA, and he married Ann Allen on 25 Feb 1717 there also. Arthur died 18 May 1718 same place. (Christ Church Parish Register).
Ann Allen was baptized 15 Mar 1701/02, the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Allen. (Christ Church Parish Register).
Arthur Nash made his Will on 11 Apr 1718 in Middlesex Co, VA. He named his wife Ann as Executrix. No children were named. The will was presented in Court on 5 Aug 1718 by Robert George and his wife Ann, late the wife of Arthur Nash. (Middlesex Co, VA Wills pg 92-93).
On 13 Sep 1718 an Inventory of Arthur Nash's Estate was made. It was mentioned that Robert George Jr resided in the house formerly belonging to Arthur Nash. The Inventory was signed by Edmund Mickleborough, Robert George Jr and Anne George. (Middlesex Co, VA Wills pg 105-107).
The births and deaths of several slaves belonging to Robert George Jr were recorded in the Christ Church Parish records between 1718 and 1727. (Christ Church Parish Register).
Robert George Sr wrote his will, probably in late 1733 (the will is in bad shape). It was proven 5 Mar 1733/34 in Middlesex Co, VA. The Will is torn, but Thomas R. George in his excellent book "The George Family Record", transcribed the will, and filled in the blanks as best he could. The Will names his son John George; Richard George; Sarah the wife of Churchill Blakey; (Elizabeth) wife of Robert Williamson; (Susanna) wife of John Thompson; grandson Robert Mickleborough; grandson Richard Thilman; granddaughter Sarah Thilman; grandson John Thilman; grandson Paul Thilman; daughter Catherine McTyre; son Robert George. Sons John George and Richard George were named as Executors. The will was witnessed by Richard Greenwood, George Blakey and Elizabeth McTyre. ("The George Family Record", Thomas R. George, 1978).
On 1 Jan 1733/34 Thomas Corbin was ordered to pay Robert George for his attendance in a suit against Armistead Churchill. This was in King and Queen Co, VA. King and Queen County bordered both Caroline and Middlesex Co, VA at that time. (King and Queen Co, VA Court Orders pg 21)
On 13 Jun 1735, Robert's name first appeared in Caroline Co, VA records. He is named many times in the Caroline County, VA Order Books. Most of the records are significant only in the associations with family members. Robert is named many times in the same records with John George and Richard George his brothers, and his nephew Robert Mickleborough.
On 13 Apr 1739 Robert George is appointed a Constable in Caroline Co, VA. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1732-1740 page 531)
On 9 May 1740, Robert George's term as constable was over, and someone else was appointed in his place. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1732-1740 page 602)
The first four children of Robert and Ann were recorded in the Christ Church Parish records (between 1722 and 1729), after that, no birth records were found for them. However, other records show they had other children, presumably after the move to Caroline Co, VA.
I haven't yet exhausted the records of Robert George in Caroline Co, VA. He was still there in the late 1740's, and probably long after that as well. More research is needed. I don't know when he died, or if he died in Caroline Co, VA.
I'll do some more "digging" on this family when I'm able.
Robert and Ann George had at least 6 proven children. Four are proven by the Christ Church Parish register, and two more are named in the Will of William Southworth (brother-in-law of Ann Allen George).

I don't yet know who Elizabeth married.

I don't yet know who Robert married or where he went.
Lodowick George is a proven child of Robert and Ann. His birth wasn't recorded in Christ Church, so probably born after ca 1733, after the family moved to Caroline Co, VA.
He was named in 1745 in the Will of William Southworth as a Nephew. (William Southworth married Catherine, sister of Ann Allen George).
I don't yet know who Lodowick married or where he went.
Anne George is a proven child of Robert and Ann. Her birth wasn't recorded in Christ Church, so probably born after ca 1733, after the family moved to Caroline Co, VA.
She was named in 1745 in the Will of William Southworth as a Niece. (William Southworth married Catherine, sister of Ann Allen George).
According to Linda Goetz, Anne married Thomas Burke and eventually moved to GA ca 1770 either to Franklin Co, GA or ending up there later.
