Welcome to my James genealogy pages. I am interested in the James surname in Marion Co., SC and that general area.

James was the 80th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 85th.

My most recent James ancestor is my maternal Great Great Grandmother Laura Virginia James (1840-1914) who was born, raised, and died in Marion Co., SC. She married Daniel T. Turner in 1868. Their youngest son Thomas Lide Turner (1883-1953) was my Great Grandfather. Virginia is a proven child of:

Pinkney J. James (1816-1907) and Sophie Bryant (1819-1893) who are buried at the McMillan Cemetery east of Mullins. Pinkney is *probably* a son of:

James James (1774/80-aft 1830) and Ann Wood (1784/90-1841). I do not have primary evidence to prove James and Ann are Pinkney’s parents, but it does fit very well. James James is a proven son of:

William James (c1750-1799) and Elizabeth Welch (bef 1755-aft 1810). I don’t know who William’s parents were.

There were several James families in the Pee Dee and Lynch River area in the early 1700s, the earliest of whom were supposedly from Wales originally. There were several named William James among them.
