Benjamin Lewis of Eastern NC and SC - Differentiation

There were several men named Benjamin Lewis in eastern NC in the 1700s, namely in Chowan, Bertie, Dobbs (now Greene and Lenoir), New Hanover, Robeson (and other) counties, also in Horry and Marion Co., SC. Some of those may be the same man across multiple counties.

I’ve found it necessary to research all of the Benjamin Lewises in order to figure out more about those I’m related to. This page is my attempt to distinguish them and provide a “Table of Contents” for them. Each has (or will have) their own page with documentation. The list below is almost certainly incomplete.

1. Benjamin Lewis (bef 1719-aft 1748) of NC (Chowan, Bertie, Tyrrell) son of Richard (d 1719).

2. Benjamin Lewis (bef 1735-aft 1767) of NC (Johnston, Dobbs, Glasgow, Greene) perhaps son of Isaac of Bertie. In Johnston/Dobbs 1756 through 1767. No record after that.

3. Benjamin Lewis (bef 1738-aft 1761) of NC (Beaufort, Craven). Could be same as man from Chowan, Bertie and Tyrrell, but I’m not sure. In Craven 1757 through 1761. No record after that.

4. Benjamin Lewis in Duplin Co., NC in 1753 through ca 1760. In 1753 he witnessed a deed, along with John Lewis, from Samuel Lewis.

5. Benjamin Lewis (d aft 1764) of NC (Chowan). Grandson of John Lewis (d 1765).

6. Benjamin Lewis (bef 1755-aft 1820) and Sarah — of NC (Bladen, Columbus, Robeson) and SC (Georgetown, Horry and Marion). They may have gone to Beaufort Dist., SC with son Samuel in the 1820s. Probable son of Jacob Lewis.

7. Benjamin Lewis (1755/65-1821) and Celia Martin of SC (Edisto River) and NC (Dobbs, Lenoir, Robeson).

8. Benjamin Lewis (1765/70-aft 1830) and Elizabeth Chambliss of NC (Northampton) and SC (Darlington) and AL (Montgomery). Benjamin and brother James (m Jane Chambliss) and older brother William Lewis (1753-c1838) came from Northampton Co., NC to Darlington Dist., SC ca 1800. William and James died in Darlington, both in the 1830s, while Benjamin and some of the next generation moved to Montgomery Co., AL in the late 1820s. They are all sons of Edmond Lewis and Jane (d 1794 Northampton) as named in Jane’s 1789 Will.

9. Benjamin Lewis (1774/84-aft 1810) of NC (Northampton), son of Eliphaz Lewis. He was in Northampton in 1810, no record after that. I don’t believe he moved to my area of interest.

10. Benjamin Lewis (1790s-aft 1840) of NC (Cumberland). There in 1820 and 1840. Not found in 1830.

11. Benjamin Lewis (c1799-aft 1860) of NC (Sampson). Possible son or grandson of William Lewis (1761-1841).

12. Benjamin Lewis (1806-1881) and (1) Latitia Page and (2) Abi (—) widow of John Cribb, (3) Mary Jane Moody of NC (Robeson) and GA (Wayne).
