Welcome to my Lewis genealogy pages. I am interested in the Lewis surname in south eastern North Carolina, primarily Robeson Co., NC, and north eastern South Carolina, primarily Horry and Marion Counties.

Lewis was the 26^th most common surname in the United States in 2000. By 2010 it had dropped to 29^th.

My most recent Lewis ancestor was my 5 times great grandmother Elizabeth Lewis (1755/65-c1810s) who married James Floyd before ca 1784. She was probably born in Dobbs (now Greene) Co., NC but lived the bulk of her life in Horry Co., SC. Her father is:

Jacob Lewis, born before ca 1729 likely in Bertie Co., NC, married someone unknown and moved to Dobbs Co., NC (now Greene Co., NC) by the late 1750s where he resided until the 1780s when he moved to Georgetown Dist., SC (now Horry and Marion Co., SC) where he lived until ca 1792 when he moved to nearby Robeson Co., NC for a few years, then back to Georgetown/Horry briefly. He died sometime after ca 1796.

I believe Jacob is a son of Isaac Lewis (c1691-1743) and Margaret Hooker of Chowan and Bertie Co., NC. I base this on Jacob selling land in 1752 that had belonged to Isaac. I found no record of Jacob coming by that land, so he must have inherited it after Isaac died in 1743. Isaac apparently left a Will, but it has since been lost, so I have no confirmation that Jacob is his son, but I strongly suspect he is.

Isaac Lewis is a son of Bridget (—) Lewis Brown and perhaps Edward Lewis. Bridget is proven to be Isaac’s mother, but I don’t believe her Lewis husband has been proven yet. Her 2^nd husband was John Browne.

Note that I have another Lewis line in Virginia, who I would assume are not related to this Lewis line.
